For an effective classroom control,these are amongst others,7 things you must not do in the classroom,specifically during lessons:
1.Never chew or eat anything.
why?Teachers are role models.If your pupils observe you doing that they will also do it and it will be difficult for you to stop them.
2.Never whistle or sing during lesson except it is a music lesson.
3.Never block the white board with your body;don't turn your back to the pupils as you are writing.Try stay on one side of the board.
4.Never speak vernacular except it is a vernacular class.Else you will not be able to stop them when they start speaking theirs.
5.Never be too jovial or be carried away during lesson: put succintly;focus on the lesson.
6.No matter how good you are,always have a lesson plan on your table.why? The pupils are very observant and will not take you serious if you begin your lesson in an hapharzard manner.
7.Never make advances towards your student,no matter how mature they might look or be.
That's my observation.If You have yours drop it.

Ofcourse,you are right in a way-the essence of language is for communication and it's basically useless if you can't communicate with your audience.yet i believe it has to do with foundation.

One time my data processing teacher was dictating and I happened to tell him to come again. He looked at him and said that English is wrong that It should be "teacher pls kindly repeat your last sentence" I blurted out but teacher "come again" is an idiomatic expression. That day I was given a punishment.
Teachers should acknowledge and learn from students too.

u are right bro. That's one of the problems of we Africans. We too dey anoda man culture for our head. English is not our mother's tongue. How do u expect a primary one pupil to understand ya queen English and u want to pass information.

But when you connect to them and they can associate with how better they can become, you have taught real life lessons there.

Of course there are personal information that must not be shared. It doesn't make sharing others for a great cause wrong.

Your students learn quickly from your personal experiences.

I learnt from my teachers on how they were able to make some career life changing decisions

For me, I don't quite agree with ur opinion on this. I have been teaching for years and I use different tactics and formation. I know the kind of students I tell things pertaining to me. There are some students that learn through your lifestyles and they tend to pattern their lives according to yours. I teach abroad and the pattern of teaching is quite different from Nigeria. They are not interested in stories coz it will bore them but few of them loves story also. I have raised mentee spiritually, emotionally, Educationally and otherwise just with the stories of my life. Shalom

My thoughts exactly. My students are quite free with me. Free enough to share "personal" issues making it easier for me to guide them. And I think it's because I have made them to understand that I am not perfect. I have made mistakes that I could have avoided and after sharing with them, they'll be very foolish to repeat the same things. There has to be limits though.
