Nigeria’s First Coup and 54 Years After. by DadaStephen1(m): 3:47am On Nov 27, 2020
The Coup of January 15, 1966 was successful in the Northern and Western Regions and Lagos City, the capital.

But, failed only in NCNC-Controlled, Eastern Region & Midwestern Region.
The Coup was Political.

Now ...

The Counter Coup of July, 1966, staged by Northern Army Officers, was Not Political; but a Revenge Coup in Vengiance for killing of the Northern Premier and their Military Leaders.

That Coup was a Bloody Massacre.

The rule of the military government lasted in Nigeria for 33 years. Democracy was restored in 1999.

And for the those 33 years, the Northerners in the Army staged over
15 Coup Plots between 1966-1999 to have Arms-Twisting-Control of the Federal Government Establishments.

Only the Western Nigerians in the Army are yet to Stage one Military Coup Plot;
not a single Coup from the South Westerners since 1966:
simply because the Westerners are too Noisy Talking, Agitating, Demonstrating and Protesting while the Northerners were busy into Climbing the Ladders by Military Machinations, Political Threats, Religious Terrorism and Streets Banditry;

While The-West seem to believe in Rules of Laws and Principles of Democracy Processes for Regime Changes.
yet, They lost at Votes until MKO Abiola Won; and the Victory Annuled by Northerners/Army-Couplotters !

And that has since been the History of the Nigerian Military Sectional Coups for Regimes Change.

Class of 1966'

In January 1966, as a result of the coup, a group of young military officers became an elite class.
Even today, the group of these wealthy soldiers and officers have an enormous influence in Nigerian economy and politics.

Kaduna Nzeogwu, a military leader of the 1966 coup once said:

"We wanted to get rid of rotten and corrupt ministers… We wanted to gun down the bigwigs in our way."

Nothing has changed, still the same old song 54 years later and counting.

And after all these someone is telling me northerners will allow Presidency go to South East? cheesy grin I laugh. If Atiku or Tambuwal should emerge as the Presidential candidate of PDP, there will be a twist ooo and the thing will go back to the North. If you understand politics in Nigeria, u should know the North will not vote against their own cheesy grin

Those who orchestrated the first coup in Nigeria, stained the green, white, green flag in blood by killing leaders of thought of other ethnic groups while theirs escaped are where today? totally relegated in the scheme of things.

The Yorubas that have been in opppsition ever since now have key positions in government, the most progressive region and warming up to become president in 2023.

The power mongers nko? Those ones are facing resistance from left, right and centre. Once Middle Belt exits their fraudulent Arewa consultative forum, it's game over for them.

Middle Belt is the third force needed in politics now, forget the 5 percenters who can't bargain for anything under the party they served for donkey years.

When you say failed, what do you mean?

Who were the people targeted that were missed?

For instance, where was Tafawa Balewa killed?
What happened in the course of trying to kill him?

then who are the middle belt?

Nasarawa state is more Arewa than Borno!!

Niger is more Arewa than yobe!!

Kwara is south west.

Kogi and Benue is the only people you can deceive with the word middle belt.

Arewa is just more than a region!

Arewa is a political Empire that is beyond tribal inclination!!

Trying to divide Arewa is childish!!

The only state that can buy your middle belt is Benue and maybe kogi to an extent.

Sokoto and Kano vote equals the East.

The power tussle is always between the north and the north.

If the north decide to adopt a single candidate no region can stop her even if all the southern state should unite.

Buhari keep failing because the north is divded and most northern strong men were against him.

Northern Nigeria decides who rules!

We can decide to pick a candidate from the minority tribe and make him the president.

I mean the purpose of the Coup was to change the government to themselves. They changed the government yes, but not to themselves.

So they still failed in my eyes but not before causing damage.

This mindset is what we’re talking about!

You guys are so carried away with this silly notion which is why you will never support a new constitution, restructuring and electoral reform.

There’s a political disequilibrium which your region has used the power of the military to create, it won’t last for long.

TRUE HISTORY OF POWER DISTRIBUTION AMONG ETHNO-RELIGIOUS GROUPS OF NIGERIA
Some people should rather use their brain to think than to allow others feed them with hatred & lies.
Some forces are using ethno-religious diversity of Nigeria to create dangerous accusations & conspiracies which are far from the truth. Those enemies of peace logically use the current predicaments of Nigerian to blame some tribes or religious group for the failure of Nigeria not knowing that all the groups collaborated in gang raping the nation. Those inciting Nigerians along ethno-religious line know very well that some gullible are so dumb enough to accept anything trash feed into their head.
Below is the data that calculated the years Nigerians are ruled under religious, ethnic and geographical location considerations. 60 years since independence, Nigeria was ruled by:
11years Obasanjo- Yoruba
9 years Yakubu Gowon-Angas
8 years IBB-Nupe
6 years GEJ-Ijawa
6yrs Nnamdi Azikwe-Igbo
5 years Abacha-Kanuri
7 years Buhari (+2yrs military regime)- Fulani
3 years Shagari-Fulani
2yrs Yaradua-Tuarek
6 months Agunyi-Ironsi-Igbo
2years Murtala, Shonekan & Abdussalam-Fulani, Yoruba & Hausa.
If calculated along religious line, it can be seen that Nigeria was ruled under Christians Presidents for atleast 32years while Muslims Presidents ruled for 28 years.
When calculated along geographical location, it can be seen that South ruled for almost 24yrs while North rule for almost 36yrs.
Yoruba ruled for approximately 12years, Fulani ruled for less than 11yrs, Angas ruled for 9yrs, Igbos ruled for 6yrs, Ijaw had 6yrs, Kanuri had 5yrs, Nupe had 8yrs, Tuarek had 2yrs while Hausa had 1year only.
North-Western presided Nigeria for about 17yrs, South-West presided for about 12yrs, North-Central enjoyed approximately 18yrs, South-South presided for 6yrs, South-East had 6yrs while North-East are still struggling to get to the apex position and still not agitating for it.
Going by the logical distribution of power along ethnic and religious line it can be seen that accusing only one particular tribe for Nigeria's failure is just a deliberate tactics by desperate power mongers and children of hate to put us into ethno-religious conflicts.

But if at all your analysis is correct, wasn’t Late General Sani Abacha from the North East

What's there confusing. Is it a sin to have a Kanuri man born and raised in Kano and chooses to accept Kano as his Indigene?
He's Kanuri of Kano Indigene, there is nothing confusing, I know what I wrote.

Well,
Just like you have your reservation about Abacha not representing North East in your so called leadership distribution,

The South West also has their reservations about Obasanjo who you call the Yoruba man.

So get your confused analysis paralysis off my post and let people engage properly and intellectually.

Who is Obasanjo?
So just because of the fact that he's Kanuri then he's must be from NE. By tribe Abacha is Kanuri but by origin he's Kano man. He's born and brought up in Kano, his father lived in Kano so what's confusing there?
in the case of OBJ, he's Yoruba from SW!
