Every body wants to upgrade in his/her career. So I applied for this managerial position at a very big company in Lagos. I wowed them at the 1st stage and they gave me good amount of money for trans.

The 2nd stage was also the same as above. Then the 3rd stage, I was to meet with the chairman of the company. He's old. Well known big shot in Nigeria. He's a Yoruba man.

He asked me the questions below:

1. Why do want to leave your company?
Career growth. I explained extensively.
2. How much do you earn?
I told him
3. Who is your father and what does he do?
He's late. He was a civil servant
4. Who is mother and what does she do?
Nothing. She's old and in the village at the moment.
5. Where are you from?
Mentioned my state from the East, but I speak Yoruba fluently cos I was born and bred in Lagos.
He said but you don't have the passport. You're ibo. I don't know what this means
6. Where do you leave?
Gave him an address on the mainland.
7. Do you have a car?
No
8. Are you married?
No
9. Any children?
No

His response: so you're not married and you don't have children? I said yes. Then he said; you can go, they will get back to you.

The admin lady handed an envelope filled with money to me and said they will get back to me.

Today, i got a regret message.

What did I do wrong? Should I have lied? Why should a marital status and tribe matter in employment? This is really a sad one for me

Why exactly were you denied the job?

Tribal-ish or marital status. Somethings are to be overlooked....

You're very intelligent to have passed all the tests... The company is on the loose end cos they've just lost a genius.. Brace yourself and don't give up.. Better days ahead... It's just at the corner.

Don't give up and neither be discouraged..

My broda don't, neva ever give up, for u to reach that stage, means u are a person of value. Please encourage yourself.

Na nepotism, tribalism and religious intolerance go eventually finish this country.

Give up is never in my dictionary. As a matter of fact, I have a mini sized biz and a small job. It's just to upgrade.

Thanks for your submission. I appreciate.

I think it has to do more with you being single, some managerial positions are not given to single people, they see us as incapable to handle responsibilities and these positions comes with massive responsibilities. Take for example; have you even seen a single bank manager? Very rare. It’s sad though, I dunno if this is the same in saner clime but it is what it is here.

Nothing to regret Bro, saying the truth should not worry you, better offers will definitely come by God's Grace.

I had to decline a job recently because it had to do with lotto, betting and all. Why should I be part of something that destroys people's lives?

Oga, patience, hustle and prayer are paramount, better go land.

Bros, a typical Yoruba man is tribalistic in nature.
Come to think of it, why is it that those of them that are landlords in a place like Lagos hardly take Igbos as tenants?

The marital aspect is another area that helped disqualify you. You are applying for a managerial position and they will like to know how you have been managing your home cos that's where management should start from.

Please stop this!

All tribes in Nigeria are tribalistic.

Your people have done worse to other tribes.

1. Olisa adibua is the programmes Director at beat fm. He managed a whole lot of people and events. He is also a business owner. He is 53 and he's not married yet. Not even a child.

2. Don jazzy is the owner mavin records. He also has other businesses. He is not married and no kids.

3. Bimbo Akintola is 50 years. Aside from acting, she has a business, where she manages people. She is not married yet and she has no child.

I can go on and on and on. These people are successful in their field and managed people and portfolio well.

The second time I refused but the lady (CEO) who is obviously the man's daughter insisted and told me; "Don't worry, to whom much is given, much is expected"

Single guy might want to play hanky-panky with the single ladies in the firm come chop some girls wey oga de chop. The old man is scared perhaps. So Ibos don de get passport? Op thank God say you lose that job. The whole shit sounds weird.
Re: I Just Lost A Very Big Job Opportunity by Lush100(m): 3:54pm On Dec 04, 2020
dear OP.

it looks like h wanted to know if you have had experience handling responsibilities.

since you aced the interview , it means you are intelligent but responsibilities and handling staff attitude is another ball game altogether.
dear, there is nothing wrong if you were handed money for transport.(since they specifically said its transport.......nothing wrong there though rare for companies to do such these days).

I have been paid before for attending an interview after about 7 round set of test which I all passed. (The company was PZ). I even tried rejecting the offer because I didn't say I would be coming form Ibadan initially.

Just accept u weren't to work there.

Most of our leaders that keep dribbling us are married with kids and multiple wives.

It's funny many people still believe ones marital status makes one a better person in 2020.

Interviewers are just like Nigerian lecturers, they might decide to fail you even if you pass. They might even decide to use a wicked marking scheme to deliberately fail you.

This is why I laugh when they say Nigerians especially the youths are not employable.

Come let me interview you for the role you're holding already, let's see if you'd pass. cheesy

You are probably qualified and No tribe and marital status should not matter - just value but our society has not reached such levels yet. I tried getting a job at SEPLAT and no I am not Ibo.. you can guess how the interview went.

What did he mean by a Passport - something that ties you to the tribe he is from, it can either be a favor for an invaluable deed owed an important yoruba person or respected elder. It could also be marriage to a related family member of known repute - if you no get passport, you are on your own.

There are better companies though Glo for instance, where non-yoruba employees outrank yoruba ones

Well it's always painful to lose out of something we hoped for. But, that's not the end of life.

Majority of us have been brought up to be a tribalist. We have also been brought up to see men without wives as failure in the society.

The old man probably didn't feel cool about this. But we will never know for certain. For all I know, he may have refused to employ this OP because he has no car.

Some will think you are still living below poverty line and will only use the new position to amass wealth for yourself. So, it might even be for this reason he denied you the job.

He may really prefer someone from his tribe but may not really care about that.

God has the best plan for you. Forget this temporary setback and move on.

I think it's because of your marital status as they believe a married man will be more responsible and last long on the job. Also partly because of your tribe as an average Yoruba man feels intimidated by the Igbos and they are very tribalistic in nature.
