I think it's because of your marital status as they believe a married man will be more responsible and last long on the job. Also partly because of your tribe as an average Yoruba man feels intimidated by the Igbos and they are very tribalistic in nature.

Intimidation is a matter of Value and Qualities... Dont drag Yoruba into being intimidated.... If Beyonce knowles and you meet on stage for a Musical Competition, Taaaa, won't you be intimidated.....
Anybody can be intimidated... Don't deceive yourself... Most people who buy expensive things to appear dope are battling with inferiority complex, they derive their Value from it....
When Emeritus Professor is teaching, an Msc student must shut up and learn...
Dont be always tribalistic, that's how Chika was telling me she never knew Yoruba guys can be handsome, when I know Guys Wey fine pass me at home.... EJEKA LOPOLO WA OOOOO

Every body wants to upgrade in his/her career. So I applied for this managerial position at a very big company in Lagos. I wowed them at the 1st stage and they gave me good amount of money for trans.

The 2nd stage was also the same as above. Then the 3rd stage, I was to meet with the chairman of the company. He's old. Well known big shot in Nigeria. He's a Yoruba man.

He asked me the questions below:

1. Why do want to leave your company?
Career growth. I explained extensively.
2. How much do you earn?
I told him
3. Who is your father and what does he do?
He's late. He was a civil servant
4. Who is mother and what does she do?
Nothing. She's old and in the village at the moment.
5. Where are you from?
Mentioned my state from the East, but I speak Yoruba fluently cos I was born and bred in Lagos.
He said but you don't have the passport. You're ibo. I don't know what this means
6. Where do you leave?
Gave him an address on the mainland.
7. Do you have a car?
No
8. Are you married?
No
9. Any children?
No

His response: so you're not married and you don't have children? I said yes. Then he said; you can go, they will get back to you.

The admin lady handed an envelope filled with money to me and said they will get back to me.

Today, i got a regret message.

What did I do wrong? Should I have lied? Why should a marital status and tribe matter in employment? This is really a sad one for me
I know people who will never give you a job or contract if you are not married

Mr Man, chilax.

If I meet beyounce on stage today, the worst I can feel is " challenged", which can only bring out the best in me.

For the records, I'm a better singer and all bey does is shout. tongue

you are right with marital status. He is going for a managerial position, so, if he can manage his home successfully ,and responsibly, he can manage the chairman's biz, also ,the post might require entrusting lots to him and if he decides to steal and run away, they will have people to trace him to, hence as married man he wouldnt want to misbehave.

It happens everywhere in Nigeria but the reason why most people think Yorubas are tribalist because it's only in yorubaland u find reasonable population of other tribes.. the igbos are also very tribalist they do worse to people in their region but due to the low population of other tribes there that's why u hardly hear it on Media..

Sir, before my elder sister became the branch manager of the bank she works now, the man in that position before, stole #8m and disappeared. He's married with 4 kids. It's been over a year now and they are still looking for him. I am telling you the whole truth!

Modified------------------
My sister is engaged, not married yet and no kids and she is the branch manager now. I can snap her ID and blur the name and pic so you know I'm telling you the truth.

It is a painful one for me cos the position is Head of Procurement and the pay would have been the highest I have ever come across since I graduated and started working.

Beyond Tribe, I think what they couldn't find in you is what most embassies term home ties.

Your not being married, no children, without strong parental value (sorry I am using this word), he saw you as a risk, one the company couldn't take.

I don't know what responsibilities your job entailed but sometimes, companies want people with something to lose, and you my friend seemingly have none.

The question asked shows, they really want to know how your background can influence the company. Asking for your parents status during interview, speaks alot of volume.

From your description, it's a big firm. They need men of caliber to patronize them.

On the marital and tribe status, the coy needs someone that is of the same tribe. Language barrier and distrust cover.

If your family is not wealthy, that of your wife can be and you don't even have. That sounds weird though but if you had said you are, trust me, the interviewer will ask of her background.

In a nutshell, your CV is topnotch. The interviewer wondered how to attained those feet despite your background.

Brotherly, the job is not yours. The time your job knocks, you will get it and appreciate yourself. Keep pushing. Iyanu ma sele, very soon.. Believe

If it’s truly your marital status that disqualified you from landing that job, then we have a long way to go in this nation. Randy and corrupt people come in all shapes and forms. They are telling us a married man is synonymous to responsible man which isn’t true. There are people who don’t have marriage in their bucket-list of things to do in life, so these kind of people don’t deserve to reach the highest level they could get to career wise?
In sane climes, these kind of people are the most sought after, cos less family responsibilities means more focus and time dedicated to Their jobs.

How many "palliatives" have he collected from other interviews or all interviews he has attended?

Is that company that rich to be blowing brown enveloped palliatives on prospective interviewers?

In an interview scenario, every tiny detail matters...it just takes grace and wisdom to be able to figure it out

You didn't lost the job due to the question number 8 and 9. They didn't want to give you the job, the chairman just purposely emphasized on that particular aspect because he wanted you to feel that was the reason you didn't get the job whereas he already decided not to give you the job before he gets to the question. Consular Officers usually use this approach too during Visa interview.

So keep you hope alive, and never give up cuz na person wey give up fvck up.

Cheers!
