1. ICAN
After paying so much for registration, training, examination and induction, and going through the stress of passing the exams, you will be told by "accounting elders" to start selling plantain chips, waist beads, bone straight or Brazilian hair and mobile phone accessories right there during your induction.

2. CIS
The Chartered institute of stockbrokers is the most useless professional bodies in Nigeria.
Don't ever think that you will become a financial analyst on passing the exam. There is a descrimination against holders of this certificate by recruiters in the financial industry. A UK graduate or any applicant who can speak a fake accent will be employed before you. The best you will get is a broker position which is glorified marketing.
They will keep asking you to pay for for CPD almost every month. It ranges from 30k to 50k.
You are also required to pay building levy every year and 60k annual due whether you have job or not.

3. NIM
Nigerian Institute of Management is a useless organisation. The certificates usually end up with the suya man. They keep deceiving youth corpers to raise money for office rent. Their office is in Victoria Island.

Forget MBA if it is not from Lagos Business School, UK or top overseas business schools.
Go for any other Nigerian MBA only if you are already employed and you need the certificate for career progression.

Most ICAN holders pursue MBA eventually, but most MBA holders don't have ICAN.

I would rather you do a more specialised Masters other than an MBA from a no name Nigerian University.

It is like that with other courses too in Nigeria!

What will u now say about most science courses in Nigeria? because u know Nigeria has never ever for once in their history be known to be science and technology inclined. Infact check job adverts before u see one related to science, one must have seen atleast 20-30 job adverts for accountants.

Also the rampant and widespread prevalent habbit of using man know man or connection method to recruit people for job roles instead of basing it purely on merit ain't helping matters at all. It is seriously destroying ambition and talent leading to brain drain (mass Exodus of our best brains and hands)

Go to public and private sectors, u will find that most people current job is not what they actually studied in the university.

Well the best approach I will personally advice anyone in naija is to have something bringing u income, acquire a skill, have an assurance of a clearly defined career path before venturing into any certification or degree.

Now Even the money that is spent on msc and PhD no be beans. It is enough to start a business. (Federal public university o, for private let's not go there).

For example somebody in academic line intending to pursue Masters or PhD, this is how it should be! One's career should be the major drive or basis to pursue higher degree or certification.

To cap it all the reason for degrees and certifications looking utterly useless in naija like u rightly pointed out is one word: UNEMPLOYMENT!

What happens to a chartered accountant or a barrister from law school wey never practice for two (2) years? They will almost be empty!

However, whichever way we look at the situation, It is still better to have it than not having the kpali at all, so that when opportunity spring up, u will be rightly alligned to grab it.

For example we have heard and seen examples of people who true qualification (high) were discovered while they were doing menial jobs/far lesser jobs, from that point their story changed forever.

"Learn from the mistakes of others, you won't live to make them all." Or else, you go sell small chops tire.

Don't you see all these I sell affordable wigs & that everywhere on Nairaland? You will be shocked if you see their CVs.

Yeah! Ironically they make their exams difficult yet limited job space

While I admit some professional certifications can saturate the market, I have to admit that there will always be a complementary certification that can make holders more complete.
I will rather suggest anyone with ICAN go for some strategic IT certifications like Database Admin and Microsoft Excel. I am sure there are many job holders who have ICAN but have become stale in repetitive accounting tasks and have no time to upgrade. A fresh face with extra IT cert in addition to ICAN will stand a good chance.

difficulty in certification exam has nothing to do with job availability. Certification is for demonstration of understanding of concepts and ideas. I advice people to look for complementary certifications to that they have already.

It has nothing however the job prospects are not there. Medicine and nursing has difficult exams yet the job prospects are high
