First and foremost I am a 2.2 graduate. But from what I have seen so far, I have come to discover that job adverts specifically give preference to first class and 2.1 graduates and very few give room for 2.2 applicants. And I am yet to see any job specification that includes graduates of third class degree.

Now someone with a third class degree can only do masters after completion of a postgraduate diploma. However, job advertisements for lecturing positions still lay emphasis on minimum of 2.2 for lecturing positions. So a third class degree applicant who has masters and PhD still doesn't stand a chance as compared to first and 2.1 or 2.2 applicants.

So my question is, what is the way forward for third class graduates, should they abandon the degree and enrol for another first degree? Or universities should abolish the award of third class degrees to graduates.

In my own opinion, students who have poor grades that will eventually earn them a third class degree should be given some form of remedial programmes for a year or two which will attract additional fees so they can have opportunity to boost their grades and at least earn a 2.2 upon graduation. Just my opinion!

Please feel free to make your contributions as well. There are a lot of third class degree holders out there who are really frustrated and would want some advice on what to do!

Pray to God for an idea. Do the feasibility studies, write out the name of 20 friends and family who are buoyant. Pray to God to touch their heart, lets say you need 1 mill, tell each of them to give you 50k. Start. With God on your side, U will be better than 1st class graduates in less than 2 yrs

Move into computer programming, degrees are irrelevant in the computer industry.

In my opinion, the majority of Nigerians 1st Class and 2.1 are expo degree (fraud) at least the 3rd Class degree holder worked hard for his or her degree.

Since we don't really get much employment opportunities. We become entrepreneurs and business owners. And also employers of first-class and 2-1 holders.

If I'm employing for a vacant position in my organization, I only ask if you graduated.

Your grade is nothing to me cos its what you can deliver that matters.

When you come to our organization, you will judge if you can cope or not.

It's not by certificate but by sabi-ti-cate.

Get top notch skills that is in high demand today, and see how no one cares to even ask the name of your school let alone grade.

More than 10 years in my industry, my certificate still in the school just NYSC with me.

Drop the class or degree and get what you are happy to do or can do.

The high demanding skills nowadays is SOFT SKILLS.

The best advice I would give to any 3rd class graduate is to enrol for another bachelor's degree immediately after graduation, even if it's an online program and try to achieve at least a 2nd class upper. At least the person would start from 200 or 300 level via direct entry considering the previous qualification.

Nobody wants to hire 3rd class graduates cos the bar is too low when the market is so competitive. There are more graduates than job offers and definitely the law of demand and supply will apply...

The 3rd class degree would be a complementary qualification while you have another one to show your grade. Then you can pursue a master's degree afterwards... That's the smartest thing.
Or move out of Nigeria. Nigeria as a country and it's institutions frown at 3rd class except you venture into politics

I am a third class graduate with brain, when i say with brain trust me i ain't joking. Just that the Nigerian system of education is so porous. Secondly its base on God's divine connection and human connection. I have worked with a top multinational construction firm with the South Africans, Lebanese and the French and trust me what they need is what you can do and not your degree. It's just God that favoured me and linked me to someone who connected me to the job and when those white guys saw that i am smart working and intelligent, they didn't joke with me. I earned about 80k to 90k then. So its not a matter of degree, God first and human connection. I have other of my colleagues who graduated with 3rd class in Engineering and they are all doing pretty well. Times have passed and things have changed. Not everybody were destined to graduate with flying colors, even those who aren't educated are doing pretty well. So its just God and not the certificate.

1. Go for PGD

2. Then do your Msc

3. Then run some Professional courses in your field.

4. Then look for a job.

If you don't have the finances to achieve the advice above, learn a skill.

Ok, so let me tell you this straight up. It depends on the kind of person you are. By that I mean are you smart or just average as a person?

Just so you know, I finished with 3rd class for other reasons than my level of intelligence. It made me feel bad because I knew I was way better than what my certificate was showing and telling about me. So what did I do?

As soon as I finished youth service and got a job in a "small company" after some series of tests, the most pressing thing on my mind was Masters. So I did my PGD first and immediately after that my Master programme while working.

By the way, the "small company" I started with was one of the telecommunications companies. After that I worked for a transport company. And now I am building my own company.

So you see? Good certificate is great. But more than that, what kind of person are you? A quitter or a born winner who doesn't take no for an answer. I could have blamed my lectures, my school or even myself. But I am not that kind of person. If it had taken me ten trials to get my PGD and Masters, believe me I wasn't ready to stop until I got it.

Challenges wanted to tell me I wasn't good enough, I knew who I was and proved it WRONG.

God's speed guys.

I am a third class degree holder. when I saw my final result, I went ahead to beg my course adviser to "please dash me one point so that I can be in the group of 2.2". But the word she gave me, made me to beat my chest that I will never give up.
She said to me, My dear, to be candid with you, you are a brilliant lady BUT the society we are now, do not require your certificate before getting a good job.
I took the words & plan for the future.
today, I'm a Civil Servant in one of the best state in Nigeria.
