Hello everyone.
I just moved to a new apartment where i happen to have space that i can use to venture into catfish farming.My aim is to raise and smoke at say 3 months. I have had little experience, though years ago.i will like to start with 500 fingerlins.and location is kogi.so please i will like to know
1.the best fish variety to get for this purpose
2.the best feed to get.whether imported or local
3.like how many bags of feed will be sufficient for this purpose from start to finish.
Any other useful tips and information will be appreciated.

this price is for distributors mean while prices of raw material differs and depends on were you get them. BTW I have done and still doing business with people here on nairaland.

I came across your thread: hidden secrets in the catfish business and I must admit it was really enlightening sir. It pushed me to establish my farm at an earlier-than-planned time.
But right now, I seem to be facing some difficulty. I have to 2500 litres tanks, both of which are stocked with 500 fishes put together. On one or two occasions, I removed two fishes with their skins peeled with a bloated stomach without any particular bite marks and I can't really state their cause of death.
In the pond where I place the bigger fishes, they are currently swimming at the surface. I don't know if this is a common occurrence in at night (11pm). I checked the second pond and I found one of the other fishes floating, dead. It had the symptoms I earlier described with its trachea wide open.
Ever since I received them at the fingerling stage I have had to change their water frequently (formerly every 3 days but now, 2 days), they pollute it at a rapid rate.
The big ones now seem to pollute it at a faster rate(the fishes will be 2 months old on the 9th of this month). I change it today and by the next day, the water is already brown as if I never did and then stinks strongly the day that follows. please sir, kindly help me with this.
Another problem I face is that about half the fishes are not of impressive size. I'm not really sure about that since this is my first time and I don't have a size chart to compare them to but when I place fishes from the second pond(smaller size) against the ones that are in the first pond, they pale in comparison. There are also some(about 30) that seem to have barely changed from their fingerling size


Also, the fishes that die in the pond are always the biggest ones. Please come to my aid sir. Thank you

I decided to check them at past 11 yesterday night and that's when I found the dead floating fish. I did some research online and I decided to drain the water of the big pond.
After draining, I found three massive skulls in the water which is unusual, I suspect they died and sank to the bottom of the pond like the ones I used to discover in the nick of time.
When I drained the water, i saw one swimming funny and after sustaining few bites, I removed it. It's dead when I checked back this morning.
The pond in which I just changed it's water at 1am is now milky and I found another dead one at the bottom.
After changing water, it is now a common occurrence to find a dead one at the bottom. I've become scared of changing their water now. Please help

your fish are over crowded. get another pond/vat/tank.
check ur water ph
treat ur fish with 'AQUA PLUS'
if possible get AERATOR.

Treat your water with formaline and after that if u still experience any death treat the water with salt, it will stop, buy one litre of formaline or 10kg of industrial salt

Please my fishes bruise easily especially during water change, tank cleaning and sorting. I am a new farmer. Fishes just 2 months old.

Is it a normal occurrence or is there something I am not doing right?. I use basket when as sorting.

Fish farming like other business has its prons and cons.. And truthfully its a very lucrative and yet a money draining business..

I have read articles about how lucrative the business is and how to invest and reap millions.. All I do is just to laugh on reading such article.. All they want is just for u to buy their manual and make money.. Surprisingly most of them don't have a farm of their own, they are computer farmers who don't have any experience whatsoever in the business..

I know of farms within my area who have shut down their farms due to frequent loss over the years.. I was also considering shutting down myself after I lost close to 2 million naira, yeah u heard me TWO MILLION NAIRA, but after diligent study which took about a year I decided to give it my last shot..
