Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has expressed sadness at the abduction of schoolgirls from Government Girls Secondary School, Jangebe, Zamfara State.

The schoolgirls numbering 317 were abducted by bandits who stormed their school in the early hours of Friday in Hilux vehicles and motorcycles.

The attack comes days after over 300 students from Government Science College, Kagara in Niger State were abducted by bandits who have since released them.

Reacting to the abduction in Zamfara, Atiku in a statement titled ‘States need to be empowered to control their internal security,’ advised the National and State Assemblies to empower states towards controlling their internal security.

He said, “My heart is very heavy over the abduction of our young daughters from Government Girls Secondary School, Jangebe, Zamfara State.

“I have had a phone conversation with the Governor of Zamfara, H.E Bello Matawalle, and I am informed that his government is doing everything in its power to secure the release of the abducted students.

“I have previously made recommendations on how our beloved nation can defeat enemies of the state and win the war on terror, and I stand by those suggestions.

“However, right now, all hands must be on deck to support the Zamfara State government in securing the release of those abducted.

“The @NigeriaGov cannot expect the states to provide security of life and property in their domain, without giving them control over internal security. This is now a necessity.

“Thus, I call on the National and State Assemblies to begin the process of constitutional and legal reforms that will make this a reality. The Legislature must take the lead, as it seems the Executive may not be able to provide the needed leadership on this issue.

“My heart goes out to the families of the abducted children, and my right hand of fellowship is extended to Governor Matawalle, to help in any way possible.”

The solution to the current insecurity situation should start from the root, we should have local government police.

State government police and the Federal police, just like the arms of government. Then we can tackle these bandits destroying the country.

It shocks me when I remember we have Buhari who doesn't take shit but here we are no week that goes by without mass kidnapping.

Nnamdi Kalu said "a time will come when fulani herdsmen will kidnap our children and rape our women" and we all called him names. Turned out the man saw the future and now we're all regretting not listening to him. Nigeria is long gone, there's no need to keep lying to ourselves.

I totally agree with your opinion.

... In as which I wouldn't want to believe that the situation we are in right now concerning insecurity is not political...... They saw the weaknesses of this particular government and seriously cashing out from it. Who are the source to bandits weaponry? Where are they getting their funding from, if not from the so called political elites. Just imaging them negotiating and asking the FG to give amnesty to people that is killing, kidnapping and causing destructions. Let's take for example, Benue State. When last did you hear of killings in the state? When there is no coming elections. These people do things when they want something from the FG perhaps, looking for sympathy from their citizens.
We are in serious shit as a Nation if these sets of blood sucking political bandits still remains in government.

WE HAVE A LOCAL VIGILLANTE GROUP IN MY PLACE FINANCED BY OUR UNION AND PARTLY BY THE LOCAL COUNCIL. BUT IN THE LAST EDO GUBERNATORIAL ELECTION, ALL MEMBERS OF THE GROUP WHO REFUSED TO SUPPORT THE CHAIRMAN IN DECAMPING TO PDP, WERE WITHDRAWN FROM THE ORGANISATION. THIS WILL BE THE FATE OF THE STATE OWNED POLICE. THE SOLUTION IS TO RECRUIT MORE POLICE. THE PRRSENT NUMBER IS VERY INADEQUATE TO POLICE THE NATION.

Today a police constable on the streets of Lagos, Kano or Onitsha is answerable to no one but his superior. He can even give a finger to the Governor and nothing will happen. Why?

Structure.

Folks, with the kind of structure we operate the police ultimately serves the President of Nigeria. They have said so in words (past IG's) and do so before our very eyes in unfortunately many, many unkind, unreasinable and ineffectual anti citizenry deeds.

Without restructuring Nigeria will just fade away as a nation state. No amount of management can help this country.

What if someone calls your entire family, generation or tribe foolish? How would you feel?

The Igbos you call foolish did not support the present calamity because they saw tomorrow. You sound like one of the doofus that voted in the current government, how "wise" are you then?

That is the only thing that makes sense. Have multiple tiers of security that understand local peculiarities and are answerable to the local populace.

To ensure accountability these services should be paid for as first line charges off direct levies so that the local or state government is not burdened or they donot hijack its operations.

Someone here suggests increasing the staff strength of the present police is the answer, not decentralization and I just laugh.

If by some heavenly inspiration all of us send our domestic security men, including drivers and cooks to join the police, even willing to pay their salaries, how many of them will we see doing duties on the streets, how many of them will effectively return policing services to us. I tell you, barely any.

They will still end up with Senators, in convoys of personal and special assistants and carrying the bags and guarding the premises of bigger men than you.

The argiment in Nigeria has never been about the resources but way resources are deployed via the system that designates it which is just wrong.

I repeat we continue to operate a colonial model of government which was all about monarchial control and not about citizen service. Thay is why today our police do barely anything to serve the people.
