Hmm

I cooked soup three days ago with 1,500 naira and decided to go buy fufu to eat with and what I got shook me. Maybe it's now better to eat out because I don't believe a restaurant can be that heartless to sell that quantity of food to you.

Attacked pic is the fufu I bought for 50 naira in Abuja

That N50 cannot buy bottled water in buka

I will say it depends on the quantity and quality of the food. There is this place I buy afang soup, they sell a small takeaway plate @ about N4500. With delivery is approx N5500. Now would I not cook a good pot of afang soup of about 1l with N4500 and eat it many times? That is assuming I have the basic ingredients sha.

For me, I also consider the energy and time involved- that is what makes it expensive to always cook at home. Sometimes I just order out to save myself stress abeg.

Anyway, I noticed na poor people chop outside pass o. Whenever I am braiding my hair in those roadsides hairdressers, I will watch the woman buy N100 rice for her kids.

We should also consider the fact that many Nigerians do not have bulk money to use and cook a single meal. Soup wey them no even get light/refrigerator to preserve.

I think it is healthier, but not always cheaper.
It is very expensive cooking Nigerian dishes outside Nigeria.
We cook with beef anyhow in Nigeria.
Beef is the most expensive meat in most developed countries.

It's cheap in Nigeria cos herders don't pay anything for rearing their cows in Nigeria. Just enter any farm and take over. Coward south

Being a single guy,
Everyday, as a fan of beans (mainly porridge with stew)
I eat beans 100-150 + fried plantain 100.
in the morning. Total = N250.
I have a customer already.

Afternoon, beans 100 (takeaway) + any other thing 100.
Total N200

Evening, bread 100 + beverages (Already in store)
or depending on how I feel, I eat specifically melon soup and Eba = N300
Or Ogba 100.
That's between 500-750 naira daily.

Unfortunately today,
My mamaput didn't open she told me yesterday that she will be having a church program. And here at work, I have wasted about N1650 already in the name of eating snacks and soft drinks and the day is not over, and I am still hungry.

For students like me, I think eating outside is better. But if the person has foodstuff, ingredients and gas on ground then cooking wlby yourself is better.

You're rich, and yet you braid your hair with roadside hairdressers.
Big salon hairdressers no sabi?

I can’t ever remember saying I am rich, maybe you can point me to where I said such. That said, any woman with a vagina knows roadside or small hairdressers BRAID hair BETTER than big salons. Some big salons do not even braid hair because it is time consuming. All they do is fixing, manicure, pedicure and the likes. When they braid, it is overpriced and I have things to do with my money, not pay 25k to braid hair that I will definitely loosen in 2 weeks.

That said, if you have money to giveaway, abeg consider me. Ese Sir.

If you have nothing to do and your time is not valuable, it is cheaper to cook at home.

But when you become someone of value and people pay you good money for using your time to provide services, you won't waste your time washing fish because you want to save 3 or 5k. Afterall, what is 5k to you when they are paying you 1000 dollars to transcribe speeches from Chinese to English.
Are you trying to say those who cook dont have what to do with their time. Why didnt you stop bathing since you know you dont have time for that. You know eating and bathing is very important to human. Ona go just dey reason anyhow.

Focus on cost alone. Thanks.

If you eat from a decent restraunt, which for my location means a proper meal will cost you anywhere between N1,000 and N3,000, then it is cheaper to cook your own food. You buy your major foodstuffs in bulk to manage cost.

However, I eat out most of the time, not because of cost but because it is more convenient for me due to time constraints.

it depends on the meal for me something like moi-moi i would rather buy than prepare cause i only need like 4 wraps which 1k will deliver but making it at home 1k can never be enough. But these days i figured out eating out is the best cause i like my food fresh once it goes into the refrigerator it will decay in there i wont touch it

Nigerians always believe home cooked food is cheaper than eating in a restaurant. But is it true?
I understand it may be so for a large family, but for a single person is it really cheaper?

If we stick to strictly cost and not variable factors like washing pant water grin cheesy or unhygienic environment.

For me the most important factor is that outside food just never taste like home cooked food and outside food hardly satisfy. 1hour after eating, you are hungry again. Add those to the afordmentioned points like hygein, you'll see why the both are incomparable

One bag of 25kg rice costs #12000 and it lasts me 6 months as a single person. I cook rice twice weekly.

To cook tomato stew costs me #2000

#2000 has refill lasts me 2 months.

CALCULATE
#12,000÷48 times = #250 per cooking which is about 5 plates. 1 plate = #50.

#2500 ÷ 8 plates of stew = #312 a plate. NB Meat alone is #1500.

#2000 ÷ 60days of usage = #33 per cooking. 1 plate should be about #6.

So 50+312+6= #368 a plate for my own cooking.

Average cost of a plate of rice outside = #500.
So OP home cooking is still cheaper and more satisfying no matter what.

Modified: My plate na big plate o. E fit be two plates outside. So be the judge.

By cost alone, cooking is way cheaper. But one need to factor in the stress of cooking, washing pots, plates and other things. And also the time consumed in cooking and washing.

it's very cheaper to cook at home than to eat outside, I spent 1k to eat bread and bread in a restaurant last week, after some hours the hunger came back.then I regretted eating from that restaurant that day, if I had decided to cook at home I wouldn't have spent up to that amount.

I don't know why but I stopped eating beef like 2 yrs in naija before I travelled out. I patronized obasanjo farm for chicken( that's the best frozen chicken one c an get in nigeria) have one lady that supply me with turkey drumstick, goat meat, then my dry fish and stock fish.

I eat beef here. Buy one quarter large grass fed cow around 800pounds. Africans are the ones that eat beef a lot outside naija. (It's seasonal for them, Christmas, summer etc cos meat is expensive) Butchers know that and they cut the meat like we cut in naija grin for us

Oyibo cut their meat differently.

Generally, I bulk buy things( started doing that during varsity days)

I prefer to eat outside.
I get easily tired of my cooking, not that it isn't good. I just like variety of hand.

But i believe cooking at home Is cheaper, especially in bulk

Back in uni, i had to cook in bulk, especially when pocket money was dry

Re: Is It Still Cheaper To Cook At Home Against Eating Out? by skj1377(m): 4:12pm On Mar 13, 2021
Cooking is cheaper because you eat less and get more satisfied. Besides, you know what you put inside the food in the first place. When eating out the environment is priced into the cost of the food and not necessarily the quantity or quality. A roadside mama put will be the cheapest because she probably has no staff and only a food cooler a table and a chair. A restaurant may charge based on it's location in the city or town and it's overhead( electricity, rent, water and salary) so each time you buy from them you pay for these services. So, in the case of my first example 1kg of rice with protein cost N200( budget like N20k for hospital treatment for food infection on the long run) while the second example depends on your location say Victoria island then for the same 1kg you pay like N12,000. So ask me if you eat twice a day will you be ready to spend 24k on food every day. The reason your asking this question is because you buy foodstuff retailed and not wholesale. It is far cheaper when you buy wholesale because you Dont end up contributing to the school fees and house rent of several middle men. [lessquote author=Pochettino post=98670696]Nigerians always believe home cooked food is cheaper than eating in a restaurant. But is it true?

Bulk cooking/shopping is good, but we know how expensive it is to do these things in bulk. Do you know 5l of Gino vegetable oil is about 5k now? Check cost of other things. What is the minimum wage again? Then we add electricity bills. When you cook and buy things in bulk, your next challenge is preserving them. You would have to be running generator to keep the freezer powered. It is not a straight line in Nigeria o. The variables that would want to kill your career plenty. grin

I am not into chicken, more of a turkey person.
