The Message of the Kingdom of GOD
Text: John 16:8

The Kingdom of GOD simply put is the place GOD domiciles and rules. Although GOD is the Sovereign LORD whose kingdom rules over all (Psalm 103:19) and His Kingdom everlasting (Daniel 4:3), however in more specific spiritual terms, GOD’s kingdom is a rule over the lives of those who voluntarily submit themselves to His rule in their lives through their repentance from sin and subsequent surrendering of their lives to the LORD JESUS CHRIST (Matthew 4:17). These are the ones who have the kingdom of GOD within them (Luke 17:21; Romans 14:17). There is yet another aspect of GOD’s kingdom that emphasises CHRIST’s physical reign on earth. During this period referred to as the millennial reign of CHRIST, there will be a physical manifestation of GOD’s glory and power. It is a period when CHRIST will come to judge this world (Matthew 24:30; Luke 21:27; Revelation 1:7). This period of time will peak when CHRIST will defeat Satan and cast him into the bottomless pit, the workers of evil and those whose names are not found in the book of life will be judged and cast into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:7-15: 21:. The righteous, that is those whose names are found in the book of life will be resident in the new heaven and the new earth which GOD will create after this present world has been wiped out (Revelation 21:1-7).

As one looks into the Scriptures, one would notice that the key area of CHRIST’s teachings is on the kingdom of GOD. CHRIST never hid the fact that He came to preach the gospel of the kingdom. He says in Luke 4:43 “And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.”

The message of the kingdom of GOD covers the areas of:

i repentance

ii righteousness and

iii the forthcoming GOD’s judgement upon this world.

These are the three areas which directly impact upon eternity. It is very important to note that CHRIST in His earthly ministry as well as the early disciples focused on these three areas.

i) Repentance
Repentance, that is turning away from sin and wickedness is a prerequisite to being saved by the LORD JESUS and becoming a citizen of heaven. Matthew 4:17 “From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” When asked by those who heard Peter’s sermon on the day of Pentecost on the next step to take after being convicted of their sins, Peter said to them in Acts 2:38 “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” It is after one has repented of his sin, that the sinner’s sin will be blotted out (not just confessing) the HOLY SPIRIT comes into that person’s life and the person begins to experience sweet fellowship with the LORD (Proverbs 28:13; Acts 3:19).

ii) Righteousness

CHRIST and the early apostles emphasised that righteousness becomes the lifestyle of those who have repented and have become citizens of GOD’s kingdom. JESUS taught that only “the pure in heart will see GOD” (Matthew 5:. He taught that the righteousness of believers must exceed that of the scribes and the Pharisees before they will enter the kingdom of GOD (Matthew 5:20). Paul told us in 2 Corinthians 7:1 “to cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of GOD.” James emphasised that our walk with the LORD involves faith and works (James 2:14). True faith is known by good works (James 2:18). A person who professes to have faith not evidenced by good works is likened to Satan and his demons who also believe that there is GOD (James 2:19; Mark 5:2, 6). Peter admonishes believers not to live their lives like they used to before they got saved but to be holy in all manner of conduct because He Who has called us is holy (1 Peter 1:15-16). The writer of Hebrews says in Hebrew 13:14 “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.”

iii) GOD’s Judgement

The LORD JESUS warned His disciples and the multitude about the consequences of living in rebellion to GOD’s Word. He warned them and by extension everyone that the words of GOD which we rejected will judge us on that day. John 12:48 “He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.” He also taught about the coming judgement through many of His Kingdom parables and emphasised that there will a complete separation between the righteous and the wicked. Some of such parables include the parable of the wheat and the Tares (Matthew 13:24); The Dragnet (Matthew 13:47); The Wedding Feast (Matthew 22:1) and The Ten Virgins (Matthew 25:1). The early apostles did not shy away from reminding those who heard them about this impending judgment of GOD. The disciples of CHRIST in the New Testament did not deviate from His teachings concerning the coming judgement of GOD upon this world. Speaking to the Athenians in Acts 17:30-31 Paul said to them “30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: 31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.”

Peter said to them “who have obtained like precious faith” in 2 Peter 3:10-12 “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. 11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, 12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

John the beloved admonished believers that everyone who has the hope of being like the LORD JESUS when He comes the second time must purify themselves, even as CHRIST is pure (1 John 3:2-3).

As we conclude this message, let us be reminded that our LORD JESUS CHRIST performed miracles, healed the sick, delivered the oppressed, set the captives free etc but never taught His disciples about them because they were part of the other signs that will follow the saved (Mark 16:17-18). All these spiritual gifts, including prophecies are temporal experiences that add little or no values to one’s eternal destiny (2 Corinthians 4:18). These other things, miracles, deliverance, prophecies, earthly acquisitions, financial prosperity do not determine where one will spend eternity (Matthew 7:21-23). As believers and members of the body of CHRIST (the church), we have to focus our minds on the three cardinal areas that the LORD JESUS and the HOLY SPIRIT through the early apostles focused on: repentance, righteousness and the impending GOD’s judgement upon this world which will be preceded by the second coming of the LORD JESUS CHRIST.
