Nigerians have begun demanding justice for a young Nigerian woman Itunu Babalola allegedly jailed in Côte d’Ivoire after reporting a burglary incident, Igbere TV reports.

Journalist David Hundeyin called attention to Ms Babalola’s plight on Monday via Twitter.

He said:

Mr Hundeyin said Babalola reported this to the police who told her to return on Tuesday, November 5, 2019, but the appointment held on November 6.

He said Babalola was informed by the divisional police officer that the suspect was his nephew. The Nigerian was reportedly offered about N100,000 to drop the case.



Hundeyin added that Babalola was then arrested and charged for theft of her own property.



According to him, she did this to avoid getting her family name mixed up in bad news and potentially upsetting her aged mom.

Hundeyin called for assistance from Nigerian authorities, adding that Babalola had lost hope and attempted suicide twice.

Reacting to the report, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) tweeted:

I bought Keke and gave it to someone to ride on hire purchase, few months later story enter inside...the guy called me one and said the Keke was missing, I told him point blank to find it that I don't need stories...to cut it short, the guy went to police station to lodge a complaint against me that I came to his house and stole his properties and collected his 300k....mind you this same person has been owing me for months, I went to a police division around my area to make an entry for the missing Keke only for him to go the Police headquarters to make the claim that I came to his house...to cut the story short...police came to arrest me, I told them point blank I'm the one whose property was missing...the guy didn't know I had long legs in the police...later later he started begging me that it was the police man that deceived him to write such petition. Nigeria is messed up
