Simply put, patriotism has to do with love, support and devotion to the well being of ones country.

Going by that definition, how patriotic are you?

well for me ever since I got smart enough to read a book and understand it's content whereby I sometimes pickup my dad's news paper to read, whenever i come across informations about gross misconduct as perpetrated by our leaders, I get really mad and upset even at that young age. I begin to wonder as to why it's so difficult for them to do things the right way and why such people are at the helms of affairs and are left to decide on who gets what, when they get it and how they get it.
most times I wish I had the power to just make it all go away and make things better for every Nigerian and also when I read news of nigerians doing exploits or even a government policy that has the tendency of making things better for the people I feel really proud and happy. I've always wanted nigeria to be great and hope one day that dream will be a reality but taking into cognisance recent occurrences in the polity it seems it will forever remain a dream or maybe not in my life time or even there will be a better society but not with this current contraption or Nigeria as we know it, probably after biafra, oduduwa and arewa is actualized well if that's what it will take for development to come to the niger- area I'm down for it.

How patriotic am I? Much less than I use to be, I must admit.

I too wondered why Nigeria was the way it was from when I first stepped foot on Nigeria soil. I'd buy the Daily Times (10kobo in my day, and a discount if I paid the vendor for the week) with interest in this country I found myself, wondering with my dad if it would ever improve. A messiah is needed, we both agreed, and so I hoped just to get out and go back where I came from.

I rejoiced when Idiagbon made everyone queue only for my joy to be shattered when Muritala got killed. And then Obasanjo handed the nation over to us democratically and we danced in the streets, only for the Shagari regime to embark on eating up as much as the national cake as they could consume, and it went further downhill from thereon. I mean, who could have imagined the super looting under Babangida and Abacha, and the looting on steroids under GEJ.

I went back to where I came from under Babangida and did not return home for many years then patriotism got me again and I did come home, but what I discovered was we Nigerians were our own enemies with corrupt ideologies to justify ourselves. For what can one make of a people who say everyone is a thief just so they can justify their own stealing, but ask them if their father is a thief, and "hell no, of course not", there own father does not steal, just everyone else's father and sons are the thieves, so they might as well steal too while they can before it's all stolen and nothing is left! And how can a nation develop when everyone is on their knees calling for manna to drop down from heaven instead of tilling the ground with the sweat of their brows?

As I said, much less patriotic these days. I kind of see it as dying for Nigeria, and unless one is a Jesus who would not mind dying to end up judging the quick and the swift on God's right hand side, the lazy fuqs are not worth dying for especially if we refuse to grab our own crosses and make Nigeria the country we want it to be, because buda is not willing to die for irresponsible lazy fuqs who won't even shed a tear once buda is gone!

So, how about a little patriotism instead, like not enough to consume my whole life like it used to, but just enough to care? I mean, it's not like I dont harbour great hopes for my illustrious country Nigeria that is just yet to fulfil its potential.

So join the Nairaland Democratic Party and let us all be the change we'd want to see instead of sacrificing each other!

It says I'm not yelling, but really, I am.

Patriotic is earn, it’s not what a country get from her citizen

How do you expect Nigerians to be patriotic under these circumstances?

Patriotic for a useless failed irredeemable hopeless country. where masses live a life of suffering and smiling but blessed with natural resources , yet have her citizens wallow in abject poverty due to mismanaged by some group of politicians

Lives of Nigerians are taken with impunity, with the good for nothing Nigerian government looking helpless when the lives of citizens are in danger. At least they have resort to paying ransom now to save lives.

Patriotic for a country built on lies and deceit, where those that run the affairs of this country are heartless, wicked and brutal. They can kill without blinking eyes if you dare to criticize or protest, they send police/army to kill and torture people and sweep the matter under the carpet.

This godforsaken country don’t earn my patriotism

When you get kidnapped and your family has to provide ransom,
When you provide your own security and basic amenities,
You really have no country,

Lol

If every Nigerian is giving the opportunity to leave and become a citizen of another country this place will turn to a desert.
All the same i still love Nigeria but the country (leaders &citizens) continuously makes it hard for us to love it
The good to bad news ratio is 1:1000000 sadly most times the "good news" is a lie
I don't blame anyone who isn't patriotic an average human being isn't interested in something that adds no value to him.
All patriotism in Nigeria gets you is a bullet.

There are no patriotic nigerian, what you gave are professional patriots,
I am not a patriotic nigerian because I hate nigeria with passion, and I know I am a better person than those that are claiming to be patriotic while they are full of hate for people who don't answer their type of name, any patriotic nigerian won't insist that the president of nigeria must come frim his tribe or religion, how can someone be patriotic to a country that is only a country in name?
You can't love a situation you are forced into, love is never by force, I don't think that anyone will freely want to die for nigeria, let the person who will agree to die so that nigeria will be better come out here and say it, people are sacrificing their lives for a biafra to be a reality, Americans are sacrificing their life for America to be great, who will agree to die so that nigeria will be great?
Anyone here who is not ready to die so that nigeria will continue to exist is not a patriot
NB soldiers are working and dying at work is an occupational hazard, if there is anyone of them that will continue to be a soldier if they don't receive salaries and will not go out to commit a crime to eat then they are patriotic, but I know there is none
