Politics / Re: Edun, Cardoso, Olukoyede In Fresh Bid To Rescue Naira by Postgraduatengr: 3:10pm On Feb 04
A very brilliant idea here
ojesymsym:
I am not a financial expert but I have noticed rather strangely that whatever USD amount is made available there are those with cash ready to buy them up. That is why CBN has been struggling to manage the high exchange rate situation.

So rather than try to fight a trend of this type, the CBN can try to turn things around such that people can buy USD from them but only with enaira or whatever digital currency CBN uses. From that point onward, any money that enters as a digital currency will now stay as a digital currency. With time, say about 8 months, a lot of the excess liquidity flying around will reduce and voluntarily find their way as digital currency.

With more people now having to use such digital currency, CBN will have better control over monetary policies. The security situation will also improve because not only will a lot more people start using digital currency for their day-to-day transactions, but cash will gradually begin to reduce, and ransom payment will also become more difficult. All BTA, PTA, Pilgrimage, Form M, or any request for forex will follow this route. It will also help to reduce round-tripping because after buying USD one time, the naira equivalent is now digital. You will from that point find it difficult to round trip since the trail will now be available. This will be far better than the haphazard approach that was used the last time that brought the economy down.

Another beauty of this is that, those kidnappers who for some reason I believe are also stocking USD will push their money indirectly into digital currency, How? you may ask considering that they use the black market for their transactions.

So, here is how even those who patronize the black market will also indirectly have their cash mopped up. For BDCs to also access USD, they will also have to exchange it with digital enaira, so that the money their customers pay to them will be entering the now-bostering enaira.

This is just a draft idea but I believe it can be tweaked further by those who are experts.

One temptation CBN should not fall for is to try to prevent those who legitimately have money in a dom account from accessing it or forcing them to take naira equivalent. It may sound good on paper but Lebanon and Argentina tried it but the result was disastrous.

I got there, despite the mammoth crowd that they refused entrance, I only needed to mention a name and they flung the doors open. I looked at one of the officers intensely, he couldn't resist the charm, he led me to the office and returned to his post. At the office, they were expecting me, I just filled some form and I was done. Altogether, I didn't spend 20 mins at the Passport Office. Politics / Academic And Professional Profile Of Nigeria’s First And Second Lady by Postgraduatengr: 3:07pm On Jun 21, 2023
Nigeria's new President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his Vice, Kashim Shetima have been sworn in. For the next four years, they will lead the Nigerian government and people.

The first lady, though unofficial is a highly influential office. The wives of the President and Vice-president occupy the first lady and second lady roles respectively.

1. Oluremi Tinubu:
The distinguished former senator was born on September 21, 1960. Some sources claim she was born and raised in Ikorodu, Lagos State, while others claim she was raised in Ogun State.

Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu graduated from the Adeyemi College of Education in Ondo State with a National Certificate of Education in Botany and Zoology. She later earned a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University). Her early career was as a high school teacher before she entered politics.

When civilian rule was restored in 1999, her husband, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was elected governor of Lagos state. As first lady, she oversaw numerous development initiatives through the New Era Foundation.

Sen. Oluremi is a pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God and holds a post-graduate diploma from the RCCG's Bible college.

2. Hajiya Nana Kashim Shettima:
From 2011 to 2019, she served as the first lady of Bornu State. Four years later, she is back in government as the country's second woman.

Nana Shettima was born into the Alkali family on July 22, 1975. She began her elementary school at the Tsangaya school in Maiduguri when she was barely six years old.
Nana was later admitted to Lamisila Primary School in 1982, where she graduated with honours in 1988. That same year, she enrolled at Government Girls College in Maiduguri. Nana distinguished herself both academically and in extracurricular activities.

She enrolled at the University of Maiduguri in 1994 to pursue a Bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature. She graduated in 1998, four years later.

She established the SWOT foundation while serving as the first lady of Bornu state. Humanitarian services were provided through this platform.

Major Keypoints on UK Teachers Sponsored Visa

February 1st 2023 marked the opening of application for overseas trained teachers to be accepted to the UK. Teachers from Nigeria, among other select countries can apply to get the QTS. With this, they can apply for a sponsored job visa to the UK.

On opening of the application, here are few key points to note.

1. Science and Language Subjects Teachers Only: Qualified teachers in Mathematics, Physics, Biology and Chemistry are needed. In addition to French and German language teachers. For other subject teachers, not this time.
2. Must have a degree in education: Teaching is a profession and you must show it by your qualification. Applicants must be graduates Educators i.e BSc.Ed or with PGDE. The idea of I did biochemistry so I can teach biology is off. Be a professional teacher. NCE is not acceptable.
3. TRCN Registered: In addition to point number 2, you need to be licensed by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, TRCN. The examining UK body would need a sealed verification from TRCN to confirm that the applicant is a professional licensed teacher in Nigeria.
4. Documentation: These include passport, academic transcripts, IELTS or proof of English as medium of study.
5. Years of teaching experience: Overseas UK teaching applications need to be backed by evidence of teaching experience. Don't burn that bridge with your past employers.

You can confirm your eligibility and begin the process https://apply-for-qts-in-england.education.gov.uk/eligibility/start

Education / Fresh Nigerian Students In UK Savor, Lament First Ever Winter by Postgraduatengr: 12:22am On Dec 29, 2022
The experiences of several Nigerian students going through their first-ever winter in the UK have been bitter-sweet. In addition to the culture shock, there is the cold weather. No matter how it is told, it is best experienced. You can’t be too prepared, so the cold hits the first-timer hard.

For context, the year 2022 saw probably the highest number of Nigerian students visa issued. The UK Home Office data show that by the year ending September 2022, more than 51,000 students visa were issued. A 650% growth between 2019 and 2022. Along with their dependants, the number of fresh UK immigrants number is staggering and dramatic as this article calls it

Social Media Winter Conversation
A video of a Nigerian student in the UK went viral. In what looked like a skit, the student complained bitterly about the high cost of heating. With a pain-laden voice, he told the gas company over the phone to “off the light” like they do in Nigeria. The respondent over the phone could be heard saying that the power/gas can’t be turned off because of safety concerns. Our Naija man answered back, which safety?! Off the light. The bills are killing me!

I stumbled on another discussion where a UK immigrant was seeking ways to reduce heating costs. On a popular Nigerian forum, a person asked, how can I reduce the bill from British gas?

So, this is not the first time international students are experiencing the grueling winter weather. Rather, the number of excited people, complaints and funny banter about the snowy UK got attention over social media.

White Christmas Stuff
We know of white fowl, which one is white Christmas again?

White Christmas occurs when there is snow on Christmas eve and Christmas day. Christmas is celebrated on December 25. This means, because of the continuous snow, many Nigerian students expect to have a white Christmas.

Well, this year’s snowfall came early. By December 11, London was covered by a blanket of snow. Other big cities and smaller towns also saw different heights of snowfall. The most hit places are in Scotland.

Consequently, a Level 3 Cold Weather Alert has been issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) covering all of England.

For typical Nigerians, who are used to Christmas on the streets, malls and family houses. This is shockingly different. A chilly Christmas, in winter wear, cuddling a pillow is so absurd to the Nigerian student. No vibe, no street party or outing. Let’s just call it black Christmas.

Exciting Winter Experience
While few express their feelings, quite a number have been super excited. We see images and videos of Nigerian students in UK excited as they walk through the white flakes. The same snow they have seen on TV is now a reality. Abroad just got ‘realer’!

Education / Nigerian Computer Scientist Giving Hope To Amputees by Postgraduatengr: 12:20am On Oct 27, 2022
Nigerian scientist and engineering researcher, Dr. Oluwarotimi Samuel is blazing the trail in an uncommon field. He is working to find a solution to amputees who lost their arm. This amazing research involves developing a technology (both software and hardware) that gives them a better quality of life.

Oluwarotimi Samuel, an Associate Professor of Robotics and Intelligent Systems with the Center for Neural Engineering at the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology. This is in partnership with the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Academic Journey from Nigeria

Samuel bagged a BSc. in computer science with first-class honours. This stellar result was at Kogi State University in 2009. He studied further at Federal University of Technology, Akure. His brilliant performance continued thus he earned a MTech with distinction in 2014.

His master’s research focused on developing intelligent systems that could enhance the accuracy and speed of medical diagnoses.

From Nigeria to China, Still Shinning

In 2014, Dr. Samuel began a PhD at the University of Chinese Academy of Science, in Beijing. It was a great opportunity through CAS-TWAS President’s Fellowship. This permitted full engagement in scientific research
and he obtained a PhD in pattern recognition and intelligent systems (2014–2017) under the supervision of Prof. Li Guanglin.

In his words, "This was one of the very first important steps that brought me where I am today."

"I developed an efficient technique that allows the characterization of multiple patterns of limb movement intents in post-stroke patients, which could spur various potential advancements in the field".

Developing a Robotic Prosthesis for Amputees

Based on the quality of work during his PhD, Dr. Samuel was appointed Associate Professor at the CAS-Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology.

He has created an effective technique for characterising diverse patterns of limb movement intents in post-stroke patients, which could lead to a variety of potential advances in the field.
His current research focuses on the biomechanics of upper extremity movement patterns derived from acquired bio-signals. This would aid in understanding how computer algorithms could best decode the underlying motor purpose. It would then be used to advance upper limb rehabilitation.

Developing rehabilitation robots—prosthesis is not an easy task. It demands thorough examination of the nature and state of amputees' residual limb muscles in order to determine whether or not they can generate some myoelectric signals.

According to TWAS blog Dr. Samuel explained that some amputees cannot perform certain limb movements such as raising an arm, even when the muscles are there. So, he develops prosthetic sockets that properly suit the amputee's stump. Then, miniature sensors corresponding to specific regions of the residual muscles are placed inside the socket to record biological signals.

Achievements and Awards

In addition to graduating with a first class and distinction at bachelor's and master's degree, Dr. Samuel is a recipient of notable awards.

For his work on developing a prosthesis arm using AI, Dr. Samuel was listed among the "2022 Top 2% most cited scientists" by Stanford University. He has received the 2022 Personality of the Year Award from Pride of Africa. He also won the 2014 CAS-TWAS President’s Fellowship. This allowed him to study for a PhD in China.

Postgraduate Nigeria celebrates this African shinning star. A role model, within and outside academia.

These points touched me.
There is no clear career path for a teacher. Except you get a Master's and PhD to become a lecturer.

But as a secondary school teacher, the odds are staked against them
Thatakwabombabe:
Honestly the educational sector is so bad and discouraging and yes! I can boldly say teaching is modern day slavery. The career growth is very slow ! That’s if at all you are even lucky to grow, the pay is too small for a very tasking responsibility. If you are lucky to earn up to 100k which mostly has to be on the island, your will be tasked with a lot of responsibility and will seat on that pay for years.

You work so hard to extra income which is home lesson.

A 3 years professional is Hr, finance, accountant is on a 150-300k pay roll depending on industry and company.

A 3 years experienced teacher would be so lucky to earn 50k before you can earn up to 200k you must have atleast 10 years experience in teaching and you are probably the head teacher

Besides career transition from teaching can be very hard, skills are not so transferable!

After many years of service, you retire poor, no pension nothing. You might not be an educated poor old man/ woman.

Above is the Nigerian education career system.
