Education / She Was Born Without Hands Yet She Won A National Award For Her Skillful Handwri by sunky97: 11:23am On May 17, 2018
Tweet
The story of Anaya Ellick, a 9-year-old girl born without hands shows that there is indeed an ability in every disability. It just takes the right mindset to see and do it.

Anaya doesn’t use prosthetic hands but has been honoured with a prestigous award for her skillful handwriting.

A third-grader in Chesapeake area of virginia, United States, she won the 2018 Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest, under the Nicholas Maxim category, an award that rewards outstanding manuscript and cursive skills among students.

In 2016, Anaya won the award for her print writing.

Growing up, her mother helped her form letters, but she soon learnt how to hold a pencil between her two arms to write and draw.

Although quiet and shy, Anaya always tried out things and believed she could do it and now, she is a role model to everyone.

“She’s really independent – from tying shoes, putting clothes, getting baths. It was always like ‘I can do it’. So, that just carried on over the years,” her father told News 3

The next thing Anaya is looking to tackle now is sports.

We hope this inspires …..

So I think it is the right time to share my complete testimony smiley

I have been following this thread since 2015 though as a guest. I had a lot of misconceptions about getting PhD admissions. I thought you must get a supervisor before you apply. I also did not know that it was possible to get funding for one's research as an international student. It is all about getting the right information and taking time to research on different schools. I also learned that the key is to start really early and mail professors. I sent mails to more than 100 Professors!( I kid you not!). Finally I took the bull by the horn and applied to many schools.

This is my profile:
1)Mechanical Engineering B.Eng 3.3/4 (Top Nigerian University)
2)Masters degree Top UK Mechanical Engineering (3.6/4 Unofficial WES evaluation. Two Professors from different schools told me during the skype interview that my CGPA was 3.58 and 3.7 respectively. What that means is that different schools have their own ways of evaluation but the different is not so significant.)
3)No publications but I showed evidence of work in progress.
4)GRE scores -First Attempt 303, Maths 153 ,Verbal 150 , AW -3.5.
GRE scores -Second Attempt 327, Maths 166,Verbal 161,A.W -4.0.

5)My work experience is mostly research based .I do not know if that helped in anyway.

Schools I applied to:
Texas A and M, College station- Accepted with Funding
Stanford University- Rejected nicely angry
University of California, Berkeley- Waitlisted since 1920 grin
Michigan Tech- accepted with research assistantship
University of Alabama - Accepted
RPI- Accepted with Teaching assistantship.
Oregon State- Accepted in both Mechanical and Industrial Engineering programs.
George Washington- Pending;No decision yet.
University of virginia- Pending; No decision yet.I suspect my application is on the waitlist.
Washington State University- Accepted; Teaching Assistantship is assured after the 1st semester.

Most schools have a deadline of April 15th to accept offers. I have opted for TAMU, College Station.

My GPA is not spectacular but from what I understand, my Masters degree thesis is a strong area of research that attract alot of funding. The reputation of my masters degree supervisor helped me alot. He is a well known expert in my field. He has over 200 publications and some patents. He wrote superb letters of recommendation for me also. Then, I put in my best in the skype interviews I had. I also spent time drafting my statement of purpose. Then God did the rest- Crowned my effort with success.

Tips and advice

1)Use Quora and Linkedin well. On Quora,I met alot of Professors there. They answer questions on what goes on among the graduate committee. I found students on Quora and Linkedin who told me about admission and funding. I follow a Nigerian guy on Quora who is an expert in graduate admissions. He helped me a great deal. He also told me of this forum. I initially thought he was the same scholastica16 here lol.

2)From my own observation, apply early. Some Professors pick their students early and try to extract some form of commitment especially if they will fund you.

3)If a school has rolling admissions, the probability that you will be funded is low. Beware of schools that offer free applications.

4)Different schools have their own ways of admitting students. Some will not admit you if they do not have funds. Some wont admit you when there is no supervisor. Just find out.
5)Contacting Professors on time helps. One told me that he will look for my application when they start screening. When I mailed him later, He told me that my application is good but that there were stronger applicants in the pool shocked
6)When you mail a Professor, do not write an episode. They will most likely not read it. Be brief. I have tested this many times.
7)Try as much as possible to use official email addresses or even your school email. It helps kind off. Professors receive loads of emails.
coolNetwork and search different school forums. You can attend webinars and you will get classic information. Use gradcafe also.
9) For PhD, read and at least know the basics and various research areas. Also try and be flexible.

I hope this helps someone. You are free to ask me questions here. Unfortunately, I have limited access to my nairaland email. Unto the next level- Visa pursuance.

Special thanks to everyone who has posted here from time immemorial. I read all the pages of this thread. Scholastica16, you are a blessing.
DreManuel, thanks for the GRE materials.

You should look at Penn state as well. Since you are for PhD you stand a great chance at being funded.

I know someone that got into UT Austin fully funded for an MSc in PE. He is actually a forumite but barely posts. High GPA though, (think 4.8+). But the point is, Professors were even begging him to apply for a PhD but he refused.

I am excited for you.

What about West virginia?
Yes, I had actually gotten a professor from WVU with research similar to my interests and listed it among my most preferred choices. Thank you sir. I have also skimmed through U of Missouri's webpage and noticed a professor with a similar research though not as closely relate as the others. I have noted it as a potential school.

Thanks again and I'm open to further suggestions in the nearest future smiley!

Hello everyone,
Please someone knowledgeable about these schools or any other schools which I should consider for funding,
should address the question I posted earlier. I need to make final choices of schools to report my scores to in order to save costs. I want to ensure I select schools with higher prospects of funding, to avoid having to pay later to report my scores to schools I haven't selected, thereby wasting the free spaces with schools I have just selected.

Thanks in anticipation!!!

Congrats Quoran, the astronomical increase in your GRE is astonishing.
I can relate with the process of contacting over 100 faculties. It can be really demoralizing.
I believe your good research experience and famous supervisor made the difference.
To fall 2019 aspirants, if you are considering top ranked schools, you need to have a good research experience.

Congratulations. Amazing application outcomes you've got. God indeed crowned your effort.

Quoran:

Education / Re: 10 Horrifying Times Dogs Killed People by RoyalBlak007: 2:34pm On Apr 10, 2018
Dogs Kill Their Owner
In December 2017, Bethany Stephens was taking her two pit bulls on a walk in the woods behind her home in virginia. She had raised the dogs since they were puppies, and according to friends and family, they had a great, loving relationship. This was their normal routine to get some exercise. They walked about 1.6 kilometers (1 mi) into the woods. For whatever reason, the dogs decided to attack Stephens.

When her body was found, it had deep bite wounds all over, including a punctured skull. The police called the scene “grisly,” and they had a very hard time recovering her body from the dogs, who were still guarding it and growling.

Family and friends were in such shock that they were in complete denial that the dogs actually killed her. They theorized that maybe someone had murdered Stephens in the woods, and the dogs only bit her in an attempt to wake her up. The rumors spread like wildfire all over social media, and people began to believe them.

The police became so fed up with these rumors that they released the crime scene photos to local media outlets to set the record straight. Once you see the scene, there is absolutely no doubt that the dogs did it. According to those who have seen the body, the carnage was unlike anything they had ever seen before.

First, from those schools listed above, check their admission requirements to see which of them accept unofficial GRE scores for application review & admissions. I know RPI doesn’t require official GRE score from ETS in order to review your application...so for such school, don’t waste your money sending your GRE scores to them on exam day since you can always upload the unofficial score report to your application when the result becomes available on your profile. On the exam day, report your scores to schools that wouldn’t review your application without the official GRE straight from ETS.....by doing this, you’d save more on sending scores from ETS even after your test.

Now, since your focus is direct PhD from bachelors with full funding, I would suggest you consider some average schools considering your profile. Schools like UT Austin and Gatech are top notch, and for direct admission to PhD with funding, your profile also has to be top notch. I think Gatech even has a min GPA that u must have in order to be considered for funding and your GPA is a bit less than that.....you can check the details from their site. I’d suggest you give Gatech or UT Austin a try, perhaps not both. However, you can apply to both if you have too much money for graduate school applications. RPI is private and they are quite selective.
If I were you, I would have Montana State University on top of my list considering your focus. Also, West virginia University, Mississippi State, and NJIT, then the very good universities too: UofFand UTK. You might also wanna throw one or two applications to the top notch schools....
Your list might look like this:
Montana state university at bozeman
West virginia university Montgomery
New Jersey institute of technology
University of Mississippi
University of Tennessee at Knoxville
University of Florida

University of Texas as Austin
Georgia institute of Technology

Check those schools and identify the ones that accept unofficial GRE score for application review and act accordingly.

Disclaimer: This is only a suggestion. Your final choice depends wholly on you.
I wish you all the best in your GRE. Don’t forget to update us after your GRE with your scores.
Thanks alot, this is very useful.
I will definitely update the house on m score.

Consider sending scores to: One out of UT Austin and GATECH (based on your interests). UFlorida, UTK, WVU (IMO, this way you'll spread the risk) any other can be the 6th.
This is based on my limited knowledge of the aforementioned schools, check gradcafe for admission/funding prospects.

reDazey:
My Second Experience
I will start by congratulating everyone who has an admission. It is truly an arduous journey. More congratulations to those with funding and all the best to those still awaiting funding. I must add that it is not over till you hear from all your schools. Last year, I can recall a close friend who got an admit with full funding in May. Hope still dey!

I want to encourage someone here today with my story. Never give up on yourself and your dreams. When you plan to retry, find out the actions that failed you and learn to change your strategy for success. Finally, keep trying if you believe so much in a vision till you achieve it.

This is the period where most of us sit and wait with bated breath, hoping and praying that our admission with some sort of financial funding drops into our mailbox. I pray everyone gets their heart desires.

Last year, I was in a similar position. I felt dejected, some of us can relate to this emotion. Lots of admissions with no funding. I applied to combinations of (MSc and Ph.D.) in Statistics/Maths. Got some rejections and some acceptances( without funding). It was a terrible blow because I felt I had a good profile. (GPA 3.6/4(WES), GRE 318, TOEFL 109). However, I learned some important lessons. It is not always about one aspect of your profile. LORs and SOPs are very important.

Having been out of school for a while and working in an IT-intensive organization; I overlooked my IT skills which were going to be advantageous. I got some advice from several persons, I selected the ones I felt will work for me and dropped the rest. So for Fall 2018, I restrategized, applied to CS programs. Also, I realized I did not take some risk on my former school list (Sirriddy and Scholastica16 encouraged me to aim higher).

So this year, I reapplied to 5 Ph.D. programs
1. The University of Massachusetts, Amherst (pending)
2. The University of Utah (rejected)
3. Kansas State University(accepted with full funding)
4. The University of Alabama (accepted, no funding. I did not bother to ask for any.)
5. College of William and Mary(accepted with full funding, being considered for fellowship)

Also, to "avoid stories that touch", I applied to Georgia Southern (MSc Mathematics and I was accepted with a funded GTA position)

I thank God for the courage to try one more time and I pray that everyone finds a reason to believe in themselves and keep pushing.

Special thanks to the extraordinary persons that supported me throughout this journey; Sirrid.dy(you are just too much), divab.iola, jaybiz.007, Scholast.ica16, MsN.as, dram.aka). Thank you guys for being more than friends.

Impressive! I'm happy you got the desired outcomes this year. Just go to WM; virginia is a cool state.

I would just add to what others have said.

You may need to write the PGRE (Physics GRE) as well, as it will bolster your chances of full funding even at MSc. level.

With your CGPA, you can aim high and apply to 2 top schools then balance it with moderates because they usually have a higher chance of funding for obvious reasons. (I recommend College of Williams and Mary, virginia, to be on your shortlist and UIUC). Look them up.

Although, you won't be judged so much on the Verbal and AWA, it will stand you out better if you do well in them.

As for your Q, I expect a full 170 from you. You should not be surprised at that, I know you are a mathematician. You should understand by now.

Look at fall 2019 more just like reDazey said. Most schools are done with their fall 2018 admits.

All the best.

Edit: Why not also consider direct PhDs? Many US programs consider MS/PhDs for 5 years. You can get in.
Uhmmmmmmm!!! PhD ooo, My heart is beating very fast, I hope this is real? Please I'l check those aforementioned schools plus their requirements. But can PGRE be a better replacement for the general GRE? Thanks alot my brother

I think the Igbos are really trying to take over the monopoly of the Yorubas in education. I just know that Yoruba had produced a lot of doctors more than any group in Nigeria that it will take a while before the Igbos or any group can dislodge them.

To excel in education is a natural gift given to the Yorubas.Igbos are trying but you cannot compare them in all aspects with Yorubas.Do you know aside the monopoly they have had in education for such a long time, the Yoruba's have the greatest number of black physicists, mathematicians etc, especially mathematicians in the world. They have the highest number of women intellectuals in Africa.Yoruba even have best black female mathematicians in the world.I am sorry but I do not know if the Igbo's even have one female mathematician talkless of her being one of the best.

These are the names of some of the best black female mathematicians in the world..

What do you guys think. I had a modest application list- 3 schools for MS EE. I was a little disappointed in my GRE scores so I felt applying to many schools would not make much difference. I was wrong actually.

I was accepted in all but nothing on full funding yet. I have a pending application for a direct phD program, recommendation letters delaying things do you think funding could still come through the PhD route given the time constraints for fall 2018..deadline is May BTW.
