Health / British Woman Who Carries Her Heart Inside A Backpack To Keep Her Alive (Photos) by Sirevangel(m): 5:11pm On Dec 31, 2017
A British mother has had a life-changing operation so radical, she now effectively carries her heart in a backpack.

Selwa Hussain, 39, has become only the second-ever person in Britain to be given an artificial heart after a six-hour operation.

A battery-powered pump and electric motor inside the 15lb bag pushes air through tubes to feed plastic chambers in Selwa’s chest. This pushes blood around her body.

The mum-of-two, from Ilford, east London, was taken to Harefield Hospital, west London, in July after suffering heart failure.

She was too ill for a heart transplant and her husband Al agreed she be given an artificial organ.

Selwa’s diseased natural heart was removed by surgeons and replaced with an artificial implant and the specialist unit on her back at the hospital, famous across the world for its heart and lung centres. It cost £86,000 ($116,000) to make in the US.

‘I was so ill before and after the surgery that it has taken me all this time to get fit enough to come home,’ Selwa said this week.

‘Harefield have been absolutely magnificent. They came up with a solution that allowed me to stay alive to see the New Year in with my family. For that I am eternally grateful.’

Medics concluded Selwa’s sudden heart failure was caused by a condition called cardiomyopathy that can, in very rare cases, be triggered by pregnancy.

The first person in the UK to have been given an artificial heart was a 50-year-old man in 2011. The surgery was performed at Papworth Hospital near St Neots, Cambridgeshire.

Using an ATM alone is risky these days, especially at night. Security cameras, cubicle-type walls, and even armed guards have been set up at certain locations to discourage muggers and opportunists, but there's one defense mechanism that could prove to be even more effective - and all it will ask for in return is a treat.

Crime / Akwa Ibom Prison Recaptures 14 Out Of 47 Inmates Who Ran Away by Sirevangel(m): 8:37pm On Dec 29, 2017
The Prison authorities in Akwa Ibom have confirmed the arrest of 14 inmates out of the 47 that escaped from the Ikot Ekpene Prisons on December 7, have been re-arrested.

The Akwa Ibom Controller of Nigeria Prisons Service, NPS, Mr. Alex Oditah, yesterday, made the announcement while briefing journalists.

Oditah also revealed that a three-man committee has been set up to look into the cause of the incident in other to avoid future
occurrence.

In his words: “some inmates escaped from Ikot Ekpene Prison on December 7, at about 12.45p.m.; to ascertain the total number of those that escaped we had to do headcount. “We discovered that 47 inmates had escaped from custody. Immediately, a search party swung into action and 14 were recaptured.”

The controller added that four of those who escaped died from bullet wounds when they tried to overpower prisons officers on duty. Oditah added that some of the prisons officials, who sustained different degrees of injuries, were receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital.

The Controller of Prisons disclosed that the 400-capacity Ikot Epene Prisons currently houses 831 inmates. He said the escaped inmates seized utensils like knives, machetes and other dangerous materials to aid their escape.

Mr. Oditah also told Newsmen that prison officials and other security agencies were working hard to recapture the remaining inmates.

He appealed to members of the public to assist the authority with useful intelligence that would aid the arrest of the fleeing prisoners, adding that security had been tightened in and around all prison formations in the state to forestall breach of security

Believe- Sugarboy
albums

Sugarboy toes the label’s line of excluding external artistes from interfering with his sound. While this was a winning move for Kiss Daniel who came correct with the hits and with the easily marketable pop appeal, Sugarboy has proven a tougher nut to crack. Kiss Daniel returns the favor- Sugarboy was the sole guest on New Era– and while he gamely brightens up inferior material like Kilamity and Ekene, there is only so much that he can genuinely do.

Do you agree?

Lagos Na Wa (Wobe Sound)- Olamide
albums

By now complaints about Olamide’s records are so routine- every end of the year- they are almost cliché. But they exist for a reason and Lagos Na Wa, Olamide’s seventh solo studio effort is proof. Powered by lead single Wo, which was somewhat of a return to chart topping form for the rapper, the disc had Olamide attempting to legitimize his new sound, a watery concoction that fails to be arresting enough to invite further contemplation.

Beloved- Korede Bello
albums

Adult audiences may find themselves unmoved by the childishness of the entire affair. When Bello wants to stray and branch out into more adult sounding fare, as he does on Do Like That, he does it so innocently that it is almost negligible. Production work is handled naturally by the trio of Don Jazzy, Baby Fresh and Altims. None of them is particularly inspired and can you blame them, a chapter of classic Russian literature is more exciting than the Korede Bello brand as currently marketed

King Don Come- D’Banj
albums

With King Don Come, D’Banj tried (yet again) to command the attention of the home fans he once took for granted, and (once again,) does not quite succeed. At this point, what is left of D’Banj’s pop career has almost become sad to watch and hints of a certain kind of desperation. He still fancies himself durable property overseas and accommodates American Trap music sounds and South African rhythms. King Don Come is too much, yet too little.

Black Magic- Yemi Alade
albums

Yemi Alade must own the title of the most frustrating pop singer out there and Black Magic, her third studio album released in the twilight of 2017 is proof. She has inspired countless think pieces and ‘’haters’’ because her music is still stuck in 2014 Johnny mode but Alade has simply refused to grow as an artiste. She sticks to her Mama Africa image and badgers her audience to stuporous depths with titles like Knack Am, Bum bum and Talku Talku. Shame what happens to a talent left to embrace redundancy.

Rihanna Mourns The Death Of Her Cousin With Heartfelt Tribute & Prays For The End Of Gun Violence
Rihanna's cousin died on Tuesday after being shot in Barbados.
The 29-year-old singer posted photos of herself with her 21-year-old cousin Tavon Kaiseen Alleyne on Instagram as she called for an end to gun violence.
"RIP cousin... can't believe it was just last night that I held you in my arms!" Rihanna wrote to her 59million Instagram followers.
"Never thought that would be the last time I felt the warmth in your body!!! Love you always man!"
She then included the hashtag "#endgunviolence" at the end of her post.
It's thought Rihanna spent her last family Christmas with her cousin.
Alleyne was walking through a track in the St Michael's area of Barbados at around 7pm on Boxing Day when he was approached by a man and shot several times, according to Nation News.
The man then fled the scene, and has not been identified.
The 21-year-old was rushed to a nearby hospital in a private vehicle but eventually died of his injuries.
Rihanna later added a memorial post to her Instagram stories with a black background and his handle @merka_95.
"Rest up lil cuz," she wrote, with emojis of praying hands, a crying face and a broken heart.
Police are still investigating the circumstances of the shooting
