The ball had passed her before she moved. It was inside the net already. She can't be faster than a moving ball
To be candid, the move that resulted to that corner kick was a clear offside but the refs and VAR allowed it to go unpunished.

2019 AFCON FINALS WATCH:

BREAKING: IGHALO HANDS SUPER EAGLES FIRST 2019 AFCON WIN

By: Jidechi Jesse.

Three time African champions, the Super Eagles of Nigeria started their campaign for a fourth title with a slim win over the Swallows of Burundi. A second half goal by substitute Odion Ighalo was all Gernot Rohr’s men needed for the first three points.

Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr announced his starting XI to face the Sparrows of Burundi in Nigeria’s AFCON 2019 opener, dropping Odion Ighalo, Francis Uzoho and Jamilu Collins for Paul Onuachi, Daniel Akpeyi and Ola Aina respectively in a 4-3-3 formation.

The Super Eagles opened their quest for a fourth AFCON title when they headed into the game with the debutants in the opening match of Group B, but where without Samuel Kalu for the encounter against the Swallows after the Bordeaux man collapsed in training on Friday..

The three-time African champions began the game comfortably, moving the ball around as they planned to pass out the back. Samuel Chukwueze and Alex Iwobi’s pace on the wings proved to be too much for the Burundi defenders to handle and Paul Onuachu got an attempt to score within the first 5 minutes.

While Nigeria were exciting in attack, they were a bit shaky in defence. Shehu Abdullahi was shaken off the ball twice very early in the first half and the Sparrows tried to exploit his wing. Ola Aina and Shehu Abdullahi were very good getting forward to help the Nigerians in attack but the entire defence looked shaky in defence when put under pressure.

The game sparked into life when Onuachu got a header on goal forcing the goalkeeper to make a strong save. Burundi replied immediately with their own shot just outside the six-yard box forcing Akpeyi to make a save at point-blank range.

Nigeria attempted to break the resolute defence of Burundi with a string of lovely passes with the front three of Iwobi, Onuachu, and Chukwueze linking up well with Mikel Obi in midfield. The Burundi defence held their own and limited the Nigerians to floating crosses from deep and wing positions.

Daniel Akpeyi gave Nigerian fans a scare when he fumbled a backpass to give the Burundians a corner. The Kaizer Chiefs shot-stopper was constantly put under pressure by Abdul Razak.

Nigeria continued to dominate the state of play with Ndidi and Etebo pulling the strings from midfield. Iwobi continued to create chances in the box after. Just before the half-hour mark, he brought down a cross from Aina and skillfully created space to pick out Chukwueze who could not hit the target.

Burundi was unable to create chances because of the dominant displays of the Nigerian midfielders and resorted to taking shots from long range and came very close as Nshimirimana’s header came off the corner of the post. Replay shows Akpeyi might have had a finger touch to it.

The Super Eagles would end the first half with a forced substitution as Chidozie Awaziem went in for an injured Abdullahi Shehu as the right back got stretched off.

The second 45 minutes started brightly for Nigeria as Iwobi and Musa combined together with the latter’s square pass is intercepted by Nahimana in goal.

Next was Samuel Chukwueze, as the Villarreal youngster left a trail of four Burundians as he dribbled his way into the box but in the absence of any green shirt around, he chipped an effort over from just inside the box.

Glory would come for Rohr’s side as substitute Odion Ighalo put Nigeria in front moments after coming on for Paul Onuachu. A sublime back heeled pass by Ola Aina and an emphatic first time effort by the China based forward was all the Super Eagles needed to go ahead in the game.

The Super Eagles now move their attention to their second game against Guinea on Wednesday as the Burundians take on Madagascar at the Alexandria Stadium on Thursday.

Germany coach Voss-Tecklenburg: Nigeria have pace and good mentality

Samuel Ahmadu

Correspondent

Having led her side to the knockout round, the 51-year-old coach is eyeing maximum points against the Africans.

The German women's coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg says she is expecting a tough battle against Nigeria in the Round of 16 in Grenoble on Saturday.
Die Nationalelf won all their group stage matches, which were against Spain, China and South Africa to finish top of Group B.

On the other hand, the Super Falcons reached the Last 16 round with just one group stage win and two defeats.

Saturday's match will be the fifth between the two nations and the third at the Women's World Cup, with the Germans claiming victories in all of their last four meetings.

Despite being wary of the Africans, the 51-year-old coach is aiming to guide her side to another triumph over Thomas Dennerby's side.

"We know that Nigeria is a strong team, which they have proven in the group stage," Martina Voss-Tecklenburg told media.

"They have had a difficult start into the tournament, losing 3-0 against Norway, but have shown what they are capable of, especially in the last game against France where they were maybe a little bit unlucky to lose 1-0

"We know we are up against a tough opponent. It's always difficult to play African sides, they have good mentality, lots of pace and lots of physical presence in their team.

"We want to make the next step and are looking forward to an exciting Round of 16 match, which of course we want to win."

Having finished fourth four years ago in Canada, two-time winners Germany will hope for a third World Cup title.

2019 AFCON.

Training Watch: Super Eagles Strikers, Who’s Hot? Who’s Not? – Onuachu Tops Ighalo, Musa & Osimhen

The team of Nigeria for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations have spent the past one month in camp preparing for their challenge at the championship which starts with a game against Burundi on Saturday.

Owngoalnigeria.com has monitored the team since the start of training and our editorial team has put together a piece on the performance of the strikers in the team ‎in training and also in the two test games they’ve played so far.

Paul Onuachu – He didn’t stop scoring until he was struck by a mysterious illness. The illness made him miss the game against Senegal but upon his return to training two days back he picked up from where he left off with a brace in a practice match.

Ahmed Musa – His sharpness has come as a surprise to many who expect him to lose a yard in pace following his move to Saudi Arabia.

However that has not been the case and he is sure to start for Nigeria at the 2019 AFCON either as the arrow ahead of a 4-4-2 formation or part of the two strikers in a 3-5-2 formation.

He has also been very lethal in his finish top of which was a fine lob over Francis Uzoho before he was slowed down by illness.

Odion Ighalo – Looks to be suffering from burn out or not properly fit yet. Although he has found the back of the net thrice in training, he fired blanks against Senegal where he could have scored as many as two goals. Should start but for now he isn’t among the top performing strikers in camp.

Victor Osimhen – Full of energy and drive but yet to get off the mark in training. Strong and direct in his approach he only need to add goals to his game but overall his performance has been very encouraging.

Nigeria seek FIFA clearance for Sevilla star Toni Payne

Officials have informed plans are now underway for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to apply to FIFA for USA-born Toni Payne to change her international allegiance in time for the World Cup in France, National Daily gathered.

Payne, whose parents are from Ibadan, has represented USA at U17 and Olympic team levels, has said she is open to play for the Super Falcons.

“Coach Thomas Dennerby has followed Toni and tried to get her to come down for the Cyprus Cup, but this eventually did not come to pass,” an official said.

"He is keen for the exciting forward to play for Nigeria at the World Cup in June, but that can only be possible if FIFA grant her application for a change of international allegiance before the tournament.”

Sevilla offers Nigerian striker two-year contract extension after impressive performance

Sevilla have offered Nigerian-American female striker, Toni Payne, a two-year contract extension following an impressive first season in Spain.

Toni Payne agreed on Tuesday to sign a contract extension, tying her to Sevilla until 2021.

The Nigerian-American forward had agreed to a one-year deal with the Spanish outfit in June 2018.

The former Concacaf Women’s U-17 winner with the USA joined Sevilla after ending her two-year sojourn with Netherlands Eredivisie women’s champions Ajax in July 2018.

On her debut season in Spain, Payne impressed scoring 10 goals and provided three assists in 30 appearances, including three goals in Spanish Queen’s Cup same term.

Having excelled in her maiden outing for Cristian Toro’s side, the 24-year-old was handed a new two-year contract at Campo Huerto de la Mariana.

“Toni Payne will play three seasons wearing the Sevilla FC jersey,” the club announced in a statement on its website on Tuesday.

“The 24-year-old attacker from Birmingham will extend her stay in Spanish football, which was premiered in the last academic year 2018/2019 by the Seville team.

“Her tip of speed and effectiveness are two qualities highly valued by the technicians.

“In summary, Payne has signed some very interesting numbers in her first year in the capital of Andalusia.

“Over 30 matches, broken down by 27 in the Iberdrola League and three in the Copa de la Reina, contributed seven points.

“These figures are rounded up with two assists. The 2019/2020 project continues to take shape with the continuity of Toni Payne.”

Having ensured their top-flight survival last season, Sevilla will aim to go all the way in the 2019/20120 season, having retained the services of Payne, who is keen to represent Nigerian Super Falcons.

Transfer: Tottenham sign Nigerian striker

John Owen Nwachukwu

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of talented Nigerian striker, Kion Etete.

The North London side made this known in a statement on its website.

However, the financial terms and duration of contract have not been disclosed by the North London club.

The 17-year-old was offered a contract by Tottenham following a successful trial.

The player was signed from demoted League Two club Notts County.

Etete scored twice in a trial game against West Ham in the U18 Premier League in March 2019.

He was born to a Nigerian father and English mom.

Etete joined Notts County at the age of fourteen, rising through the ranks before making his first team debut in a Checkatrade Trophy clash against Newcastle United U21 in October 2018.

AFCON 2019: Rohr names best three Nigerian goalkeepers

Head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, has named the trio of Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Daniel Akpeyi and Francis Uzoho, as the best goalkeepers Nigeria has at the moment.

Rohr was asked why he keeps picking them, even though they have all struggled at club level at various points, during the just concluded season.

The German defended the keepers, by saying his scouts have run the rule on several options and certified the trio as the best bet for the team now.

Although Fortuna Dusseldorf youth team goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, caught their eyes, he was not included because he is presently injured.

“We have the three best goalkeepers for Nigeria now with us.

“My scouts have watched the others goalkeepers and these three are still the best we have for now.

“We found one in Germany who plays for Fortuna Dusseldorf but he is injured so we couldn’t call him up,” Rohr told reporters in Asaba.

He however refused to reveal which of the three, will start for Nigeria at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

30-Goal Chelsea Winger Commits International Future To Nigeria Over England

Chelsea prodigy Adrian Akande has committed his international future to Nigeria despite being courted by the English Football Association, allnigeriasoccer.com
can exclusively report.

Golden Eaglets coach, Manu Garba closely monitored the highly-rated winger in Abuja for about one week, with a view to naming him on the roster for the upcoming Africa U17 Cup of Nations in Tanzania.

Akande arrived the Nigeria U17s camp with a huge reputation, having netted an impressive 30 goals in 42 games for Chelsea's youth teams this season, while providing 22 assists.

''Adrian has been called for five England camps and has rejected all of them in hope of playing for Nigeria,'' Adrian's agent, Tobi Alabi who used to play for Millwall, told allnigeriasoccer.com.

Akande has certainly shown signs that he could cut it as a professional footballer as he has drawn comparisons to Chelsea superstar Eden Hazard and Barcelona's Ousmane Dembélé.

''He plays like Hazard and Barcelona's Dembele. He is two-footed, very quick and strong on the ball. He can score the same, with both right foot and left foot and he is a hard worker.

''He has no weaknesses. I saw a mention that defensively he isn’t strong but he’s not a defender, he’s an attacker so his defensive capabilities aren’t important, of course he will work hard for his team but he’s not a defender, '' added Alabi.

Adrian Akande played for the youth team of Crystal Palace before transferring to Chelsea at the age of twelve.

Ifeanyi Emmanuel.
