Wasn't going to reply to this thread but I'm struggling to wrap my head around the traditional Nigerian excuse given by some posters here. Wha kind of person are you when you can open your eyes and ask "is criticism going to feed Abati"? How unprincipled do you have to be not to recognise that the function he served in the nation's consciousness both as an editor of the Guardian and as a journalist with a dedicated following demanded a certain kind of behaviour from him? His contemporaries in developed countries pride themselves on their integrity as journalists and for being able to hold their governments to account. If you think his years of criticising the party in power and GEJ himself is worth nothing when compared to the money he stands to make from GEJ just because he would now be able to "enjoy" his retirement then it only goes to show the real problem with this country. From the few above posters that have excused his greed I can say that Nigeria's problem is less about corruption at the top and more about a fundamental lack of principles, discipline and morals among the common people. The other way this can be observed is the almost total absence of ideologies in the country's politics. Its all very sad. |
Lol abeg leave Ibadan alone. Its not our fault if he grew up there |
Haha hell no! If our military was as professional and well run as those of the Scandinavian countries where they do that then it will be understandable. Even common NYSC is not halfway close to being properly run not to talk about the Nigerian military where soldiers are at the mercy of their officers and mistreated beyond belief. Another thing to consider is the place of the military in Nigerian society. To start with the public doesn't have the same respectful relationship with soldiers that you will find in developed countries. The degree of indispline in the military will only lead to new recruits abusing their new found power. Personally, I wouldn't trust any young person in Nigeria with a gun in his/her hand |
Even though it is my opinion that Buhari is better equiped or has the stronger will to solve the two problems I identified above, surely our choices during the election were not limited to Buhari/GEJ alone? On the other hand, if some factions in the north are causing unrest on purpose, is it not up to GEJ as the GCON to put down and eradicate all threats to national security? Instead he is using SSS to intimidate el-Rufai because of some random comments he made about government spending, SMH |
I really would love to hear from all the people that were supporting GEJ during the elections. Identify yourselves please. Come out and defend GEJ's handling of this crisis especially since he has been president for over a year now. If we become the new Pakistan with the US giving themselves license to bomb targets in the North we would all suffer and the blame will rest squarely on his weak indecisive shoulders. What we really need now is a strong leader to tackle the 2 most glaring problems today which are security and corruption so that we can move forward on other issues. If that doesn't happen then I think its time for every man to go his own way and this country split up so we can leave the north with their problems. |
Anvaller:. Typical nigerians? Please don't make me laugh. This is what you said: "Now let me ask you, would you tell me that if Ajimobi lost a batlle for 2nd term against an opposition he hates so much, most especially if such opposition as done a good job bombarding the media about his weaknesses all the time. In that case would he also not set trap? Ladoja did it to Akala and Akala to Ajimobi. Politicians fight with whatever they have" Now that my friend, is making excuses for blatantly inexcusable behaviour. On the topic of Ajimobi making excuses for future failure, that is highly presumptive on your part. You are assuming that he is going to fail without any evidence to back it up. You also assume (quite erroneously) that I will defend him in the event of such failure. All I'm saying is that you should give the new man in charge the opportunity to take stock, formulate policy based on the actual situation on the ground and then implement them. One month into office is definitely not enough time to make judgements or the kind of criticism you are embarking on. What you are doing is not constructive criticism. What you are doing is about finding fault for the sake of looking like your engaged or different. |
Boko Haram is attracting attention from al-Qaeda? God help us all |
http://www.dailytimes.com.ng/article/al-qaeda-use-nigeria-hq-british-intelligence "Al-Qaeda to use Nigeria as HQ" - British Intelligence British Intelligence has warned the UK Prime Minister David Cameron that terrorist group Al-Qaeda is determined to make Nigeria its command and control center for plotting attacks on the West. Article | July 4, 2011 - 6:57am | By Kayode Babalola MI5 British Intelligence has warned the UK Prime Minister David Cameron that terrorist group Al-Qaeda is determined to make Nigeria its command and control center for plotting attacks on the West. A report published in The Mirrorclaimed that MI5 warned that radical Islamic groups operating in Nigeria, especially the Boko Haram sect have dramatically stepped up their campaign. Boko Haram which operates mainly around the Maiduguri area has claimed responsibility for more than a dozen bomb attacks in the country including a recent suicide explosion at the Police Force Headquarters in Abuja. The group has killed hundreds of people since it started its jihadist campaign against the Nigerian people and government. “There are dozens of flights every day from Lagos to London. We either help stop the terrorists here, or we will be dealing with them on the streets of Britain,” a British official told the paper. National Security Adviser (NSA), General Andrew Azazi has deployed every machinery at his disposal to identify the sponsors of the Islamic sect with a means to crippling the radical group. The NSA has prioritized intelligence as the key means of crushing the radical group, which has so far defied government forces. A key figure in the security services at the weekend told us that govenrment suspects some serving and retired military personnel who are unhappy with the current political equation in the country are responsible for the violent attacks currently being executed under the trade name Boko Haram. |
Anvaller:To be clear are you saying that what Akala did is justifiable simply because thats what any politician would do? If thats the case then you must be out of your mind. There is no justification for a sitting governor to attempt to ruin his state simply because he lost out in an election. Oyo state does not belong to any one person, least of all to inbred scoundrels and thugs like Akala. On the other hand I do not understand your criticism. The man (Ajimobi) has barely spent a month in office and its obvious that the first thing anybody would do on taking up a new position in any office, comapany, organisation or government is assess the actual situation on ground. This is especially crucial in political offices because you never know the true extent of affairs until you are actually sitting in the office. I was in the US when Obama was campaining for CHANGE. He made many promises and so did McCain but this was based on information that was publicly available. Obama got in and the first thing he did was to order status reports from all major government agencies that would make him able to formulate actual policies. Governing is not by magic and stock-taking is important. its not like he's GEJ that has actually been in power as VP, continued as President for over a year before HANDING OVER TO HIMSELF and still does not have any solid policies or plans to take the country forward. At this stage GEJ should have intimate knowledge of both the problems of and the answers to Nigeria's situation yet he is dragging his feet while the country falls apart. SMH |
Haha. Just had to read this thread to see what the responses were and its confirmed that a majority of Nigerian girls are gold diggers |
wtf is this musiwa guy on about? |
joe4christ:Yes it is absolutely scientifically/medically impossible for a woman to seperately conceive seven different children and give birth to them in a yr. The only way that can happen is if she had septuplets and then had proceeded to have the longest delivery ever known to man. Otherwise both her and her children will have to have had genetic mutations to the point where each kid grew to term in less than 9 months. I say this not knowing what the womans story is. If its the first scenario then maybe, just maybe. |
Ystranger:Are you comparing Awolowo to Jesus Christ? Even with the massive respect I have for the man please this is beyond ridiculous. |
If mama is 96 yrs old then she should behave like an elder. I can't believe how someone can compare Awo cooperating with his opponents on critical issues with the Awolowo family lending the legitimacy of the family name to thieves and looters in our midst! Take Akala in my native Oyo State for example. The man is the worst kleptomaniac and none performer you would ever see in your life. He collaborated with Adedibu to share Oyo State money, appoint cronies and leave Ibadan, my city of origin, one of the worst places to live in Nigeria. He has absolutely no political ideology and only bothers about his pocket. That sort of man does not have opponents because he disagrees with them. He has opponents because he wants to be the one at the centre with the opportunity to steal money. Yet a whole HID would count him as her friend ?!!!!! You cannot say that that type of padi-padi is about collaboration with opponents because the only thing to oppose with the PDP governors is their kleptomania and sticky fingers. No development at all. I absolutely refuse to believe that Awo would have been friends with them. |
Before responding to this topic I would just say that I am Yoruba and I have a huge amount of respect for Baba Awolowo. However, he has been betrayed and disgraced by the family he left behind. HID is not a politician. She should be an elder statesperson who holds the interests of her own people dearer than anything else. Yes ACN are not angels, however we can all see that what they've done so far has been for the benefit of the Yoruba nation. PDP on the other hand has not only given yoruba people corrupt governors and leaders, the leadership they have shown so far has threatened to drag us back into the stone age. For someone like HID to be hobnobbing with Akala, OGD, Oni and co is a huge slap in the face of not only the yoruba people, but her husband as well. For this alone she deserves the ire of the people not their blessings. If you see someone is befriending your worst enemy you don't go over and give that person a pat on the back. you call that person to order no matter how old the person is. If the Awolowo family know what is good for them they better stop relying on their father's name to give them respect in yorubaland and start earning that respect through their actions. |
Its a shame. A huge shame |
Can someone please ban this Musiwa guy for God's sake? Every important thread in the politics section that i've read in the past two days has contained his insane off topic rants and it just throws people off. Seeing his picture now is disturbing because I tend to respect elders but it seems that this guy is just mental regardless of his age. |
Ok I've been reading stuff about Nigerian history and I came upon this article from the June 9, 1998 copy of the Washington Post, a respected newspaper. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/inatl/longterm/nigeria/stories/corrupt060998.htm Towards the bottom of the article it describes the Chagoury family and how they made their money from Abacha. Is a disgrace to say the least. I did a quick Google search and what do I see? The Chagoury son that was Abach's bosom friend is now described as a foremost philanthropist, industrialist, family man, ambassador, diplomat, you name it. He was even an ambassador to the Vatican for St. Lucia, a Carribean island country, and he even has a gallery in the Louvre of Paris, France named after him! I guess my point is, people do get away with things in this world, and sadly this is a blatant example of what you can achieve if you are willing to get your hands dirty in Nigeria . if this was a developed country, someone would have tracked this man down, exposed him and recovered all the money by now. It is only in Nigeria someone would come from Lebanon of all places and monopolise all our own resources, walk away and dare to flaunt his ill gotten wealth. http://www.chagourycouture.com/ http://www.gilbertchagoury.com/ http://www.chagourygroup.com/ |
So let me understand what is going on. In protest at the elections some hausa and fulani muslims are attacking and killing Southerners in their midst, both Yoruba and Igbos, as well as attacking other Hausas and Fulanis. Igbos in the SE are threatening reprisal attacks on Hausas and Fulanis in the the SE and these Northerners in the SE are now fleeing westwards. Pray tell me how you people advocating the murder of your hausa friends leaving among you are any different from northerners in the north killing southerners? Wouldn't that end up perpetuating the violence? What would you tell the mother and child of the innocent men you choose to kill? How does this war mongering fit in with your religious beliefs? If you are christian i'm pretty sure Jesus was against an eye for an eye. Besides, what kind of Justice is that? So if your brother kills my brother, I am fully justified in going out and shooting you simply because you are related to him? I'm really surprised at how some people think sometimes. Nigerian mentality fundamentally has to change. Till then we'll continue to be dysfunctional. It's only in Nigeria that a yoruba person saying that you should keep the violence out of the SW qualifies all yoruba people as cowards. i guess we'll only be courageous people if we start a genocide agaist all hausas and Fulanis. Little do you know that it takes more guts to stand up, refuse to take the easier route of rioting and lawlessness and demand justice. Deny it all you want, but reprisal attacks are for cowards. |
My fellow Nigerians, as you have voted so shall you reap. I will just sit down and watch Nigeria unfold without saying anything. I hope at the end of the our years Beaf and all the other GEJ supporters will still be here to answer any questions I might have. BTW I do not wish GEJ to fail because if he does, it is also the lives of my family that will be at risk. If he succeeds, then my people too will prosper. However my own personal opinion is that Nigeria will not see any significant improvement. I hope to God that I'm wrong. |
To those asking for proof like birth certificate, passport, etc., pray how is it possible for someone who happens upon this scene to obtain those documents? Are you saying if you walked up to a polling booth tomorrow and saw that happening you would go and ask the person to show you her passport so you can confirm her identity to the world? Simple common sense really - the person who uploaded the vid has told us what he knows about the women. We can only take his word for it. And for those querrying the reasons for putting the vid on youtube and not calling the police, i'm guessing you haven't been in Nigeria b4? You think this is like the US or UK where you will stand there and call 911 or 999 and dispatch would send offiers to the scene? Did you not see all the people there behaving like it was the most normal thing in the world? if he had intervened he'll probably have got the beating of his life. He did the safe thing imo by discreetly taping the incident. As for the question of rigging done by other parties, I can only say that if there is any eviddence whatsoever, be it videos, falsified result sheets, etc. etc, then step forward with it. It does no good making blanket accusations and using such generalisations to encourage us to accept this outrage. We should not accept this nonsense under the guise that others are doing it. And finally this is Wole Soyinka's take on the elections http://www.facebook.com/notes/nigeriansfornigeriaorg/wole-soyinka-on-the-ongoing-general-elections/10150158708805811. Note that the man has retired from public life. At some point in life you can only get tired of the problems of this country called Nigeria and retire if not it will kil you. |
Sagamite:amen amen amen. PDP has been the death of Oyo State for 12 years. We have not just gone backwards, we have become the laughing stock of the whole country. "pacesetter state" my arse. hopefully alao akala is kicked out in similar fashion |
damoche07: Jimmy Boy: |
apart from a few lines that were pure conjecture, the OP mirrors my sentiments exactly |
I agree that we were never in a position to implement this when we can't even manage the hydro plants we have now. However some of the criticisms are faulty. The problem with Nigeria and nuclear power generation is one of personnel, not one of geography. What happened in Japan is never going to happen in Nigeria because we don't have hurricanes or earthquakes. We will definitely find a way to mess it up sha. I can just imagine what will happen, engineers will go to work 4 hrs late, or forget to check this or that and before you know it we have our very own Chernobyl. Ironically we are blessed to be in the ideal climate and geological circumstances for a lot of these advanced technologies to work but we just can't seem to take advantage. Look at the USA with all its San Andreas fault, hurricanes, tsunamis, tornadoes etc, and all their power plants and stuff. They would love to be able to construct things without having to worry about them but here we have perfect conditions but are still stagnant. ![]() |
Anyone who resorts to violence and intimidation in order to keep a political office is not worthy of being the head of his own home, not to talk of holding a political office. If all these things said about Akpabio is true, then regardless of his performance in office, he should be voted out in April. This is why Nigeria is still backward. |
kayci_d77:And this is relevant how? Nigerians and their twisted logic sha, |
How has GEJ performed in the Power sector then? Has he kept his promises? |
@Justwise exactly |
I don't think Al-Jazeera is a Western network is it? If you don't trust western news networks then watch Al-Jazeera here http://www.youtube.com/aljazeeraenglish?feature=ticker. This AU panel that is coming out with this nonsense is a useless body. This is the min reason Africa is underdeveloped. You see someone killing his people, threatening NO MERCY against his OWN PEOPLE, bombing unarmed protesters and all they can do is form committees and beg Qaddafi to respect human rights? How is that going to change anything? How is that going to save the lives of the Libyans in Misrata and Benghazi? Yes the West might be motivated by oil, but I fail completely to understand how THIS PARTICULAR ACTION they are taking isn't altogether positive. This crisis is about Libya in the here and now, so talking about the UN inaction in other conflicts long past or in other regions of the world is another discussion entirely and only ignores the fact that Qaddafi is on his way to committing Mass Murder and has to be stopped. Its like arguing in court that because one man was not thrown in jail yesterday for killing his wife I should be allowed to kill my wife today too? All these sit-tight African leaders are afraid of is the loss of Libyan investment in their countries and protests starting against them in their own countries. Anyway all will be judged sooner or later. |
Reading all the posts that are in support of Gaddafi just makes me wonder at the typical Nigerian mentality that will see us defend the indefensible forthe flimsiest reasons. I wouldn't even bother quoting anybody, but when you have people saying that democracy is not a must, or that it is okay for Gaddafi to slaughter protesters as if Libya is his personal property, I tremble. That we need checks and balances in this world, I agree. But to say that we should accept somebody who sponsors terrorism, wants to unite all of Africa for the sole reason of becoming its leader, who thinks nothing of dropping bombs on his own counttrymen and would invite mercenaries to kill them, as our brother is nothing short of madness. This is the same guy who would see Nigeria broken up so that Libya will have less competition on the African stage. Its like saying that if Abacha was 4X as bad and had started openly bombing the homes of pro-democracy figures it is all well and good as long as he remembers to denounce the west!?!? The situation in Libya is not dependent on goings on in another country. That Bahrain is starting to do the same thing does not make it okay for Libya. If you take Libya in isolation this is the best course of action for the international community to save lives. If you guys want to discuss another country you should open another thread and talk about the hypocrisy of the West to your hearts content. Besides the idea for the no-fly zone is one openly supported by other Arab states and Egypt have been arming the "rebels" lately. The countries that abstained from the vote did not oppose it. If they did one single veto from Russia or China would have stopped the whole thing. Please listen to your conscience people, |
Chrisbenogor:well if anyone has bothered to look at the resolution that was passed, you will have noticed that the UN is aiming to cripple Gaddafi militarily by taking out all his military aircraft and other equipment. The resolution explicitly forbids ground forces so no ground invasion is going to take place. Other Arab states are also involved. Basically all they're doing is relieving pressure on the "rebels" and preventing poor civilians from being wiped out. If we can't see how this is different from Iraq which was basically a unilateral decision by the US for selfish reasons then ther's no point in arguing. IMO this should have happened 2 weeks ago but the Iraq experience is making everyone extra-cautious. |

, you think this is Lagos, Do you know that Akpabio is married to our lovely sister obioma.
Now be carefull cos he is connected to the Ibos, infact majority of them, my grand mother is even from Ikono
