Crime / Why We Could Not Take Boko Haram Suspects To Court - Nigeria Prison by vivianblog2(f): 8:56am On Nov 18, 2015 |
Nigeria Prison Services has explained to Naij.com reasons behind their inability to transport five Boko Haram suspects to court on Tuesday, November 17, for commencement of hearing on a case against them. Speaking to Naij.com, the spokesperson of the Nigeria prison Francis Enobore said the fuel scarcity in the country was the reason why the suspects failed to appear before the court. Enobore said: “I got your inquiry on the inability of our officials to bring suspects in court due to lack of fuel; yes, that was what happened. It is quite unfortunate that the development came up badly.” He said that the development was due to the present fuel scarcity in Nigeria and not because of lack of funding. He however said that such a situation has never been the case with transporting inmates to courts. Also, when Naij.com inquired possible measures the prison authority is taking to avoid a recurrence, Enobore said: “You see, there are things that are important to us with respect to security and fuel is one of these items. The fact is we do not have a dump, and we do not even encourage establishing a dump in any of our facilities for very obvious reasons.” He said with the caliber of suspects kept in most of the facilities across the country, a fuel dump is inadvisable. “We know what they are capable of doing, so there are things we do not keep around them at all for security reasons,” he said. He added that the little fuel left in the facility’s generator was turned into one of the operational vehicles of the prison services. “In fact, the officer in charge of the location, facility in Kuje where the suspects were supposed to have been taken had to turn the fuel from the generator into one of the vehicles that took some inmates another court yesterday, the situation got that bad,” he said. He added that it will be difficult to state that next time the facility will store fuel in tanks or any other unconventional means for use in vehicles or generators for electricity. Meanwhile, the new minister of petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu has ordered the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPP) to seal off fuel stations caught hoarding petroleum product and give out the petroleum free to the public. On Tuesday, November, 17, the hearing of the case against five Boko Haram suspects was stalled at a federal high court in Abuja. The prosecuting counsel M.S Diri told the court that the suspects could not be brought in due to lack of fuel in the operational vehicles of the Nigeria prison service expected to transport the suspects. Diri standing in for the police said his client (the police) will on next adjourned date take sole responsibility of transporting the suspects in a better condition to the court. The case was adjourned to December 17 for commencement of hearing. source https://www.naij.com/640879-not-take-boko-haram-suspects-court-nigeria-prison.html Cc; lalasticlala , ishilove

Otobong Nkanga has emerged winner of the 2015 Yanghyun Foundation Artist Award in Seoul, Korea. Ms Nkanga is the first African recipient of the prestigious award. Nkanga was born in Kano, Nigeria in 1974. She studied at OAU, Nigeria, State, Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts in Paris, and the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Amsterdam, and completed Advanced Studies in the Performing Arts at the DasArts, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. She has participated in a number of international exhibitions, including Biennale de Lyon (2015), Sao Paulo Biennale (2014), Berlin Biennale (2014) and Sharjah Biennale (2013), and has held solo exhibitions at a number of art institutions, such as Museum Folkwang, Germany; M HKA, Belgium; Stedelijk Museum, The Netherlands; and Kadist Foundation, France. Describing Nkanga's work, Contemporary And said: "Otobong Nkanga’s activities and performances encompass all kinds of media and motivate photography, drawing, painting, sculpture, installation and video. They weave together concerns about land, natural resources, architecture, the value connected to them and the dynamic status of remembrance. Her trans-categorical artistic practice is defined by her ability to pervade the complex layers of human and natural traces left in material objects and landscapes. Architecture and landscape act as a sounding board for narration and “the performative,” as a human trace that testifies of ways of living and environmental issues." Health / LASUTH Performs First Kidney Transplant by vivianblog2(f): 7:00am On Nov 13, 2015 |
LAGOS — Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, yesterday joined the league of hospitals that offers kidney transplant services following a successful kidney transplant on a 56-year- old man in Lagos. The life-saving procedure which took two and half hours was the first of its kind in the tertiary institution. Speaking on the feat, the elated Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Wale Oke, said the successful kidney transplant was part of the state government’s promises to deliver excellent healthcare services to the people of Lagos State. Oke revealed that prior to the surgery, several consultations were made to ensure that the patients were well selected to avoid complications after the exercise. “But thank God today, both the donor and recipient are in sound health,” he said. The Chief medical Director who assured Lagosians that the hospital would continue to bring such services in-country. Speaking, leader of the transplant team, a Consultant Nephrologist, Dr. Jacob Awobusuyi, said the initiative was conceived three years ago. Awobusuyi explained that gaining the confidence of the patients was very tough but after the operation, they were both excited. “Before the operation, both the 56-year-old recipient and the 26-year-old donor who was the patient’s nephew expressed concern. But after the operation they were both fine,” he said. source http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/11/lasuth-performs-first-kidney-transplant/ Cc; lalasticlala 5 Likes 1 Share |
