Parachoko:
Buhari woeful performance almost caused APC this election

I know lots of Yorubas who are Christians and Muslims who voted against Asiwaju because of the Naira scarcity

Buhari naira redesign was not done at the right time. That policy alone made Asiwaju lose lots and lots of votes

I agree with you.

I don't think so. PMB created Obidients with 8 years of misrule.

You made some good points, but Tinubu's election results in Lagos alone throws a big spanner into your thesis.

Before you quoted what I said as false. Did you even bother to give it a thought? If you get a news and you verify from the right body and the process of verifying was easy would you bother spreading it? How easy is it to get official information from a body like the NCC,CBN or Aso rock when you are a nobody? They only respond when their organisation is being rubbished in the media. If the process of verifying fake news is easy, people will be more careful of the news they spread as they will find out most information on our space are false. It will also make it easy to quickly detect those that directly distort these information.

A case in point is when Simon Ekpa was arrested. It was very easy for we here in Nigeria to verify from the Finland authority if the News was fake or real. Can you say same for Nigeria?

You are indeed a rare breed on nairaland: a deep thinker.

As long as Buhari is President of Nigeria. Mark my words, Supreme court, Tinubu and those corrupt Governors are wasting their time.

You can as well go to Supreme court to deposit the old notes.

Or you can deposit your old notes in any of the following banks

You are everything wrong with this country: uneducated, uncivilized, irredeemably lost and hopeless. I neither quoted you nor mentioned you. What do I do with this illiterate, out-of-point submission of yours. You are henceforth ignored.

When did supreme court assume the powers of CBN

There are laws, rules and regulations guiding the activities of the CBN.

If the CBN flouts any of theses laws while carrying out its monetary policies, then The Supreme Court has the powers to hear cases regarding any of these infringements.

The SC only "wanted to ascertain" that the CBN didn't break any law over the implementation of the Naira Redesign Policy.

Is this explanation simple enough for you?

If this happens in the US, proceedings to impeach a president that defies the Supreme Court would be swift.

People don't seem to understand that in undermining the Supreme Court, this President has set a very dangerous precedent that goes to the very roots of the country's legitimacy as a constitutional entity. Other Presidents are likely to do same in future.

Once the Supreme Court is defenestrated, we are on the road reckless lawlessness.

Foreign investors will look at the disregard for even the Supreme Court & they will say no, thank you, we would rather invest in another country where Court rulings affecting our contractual and property rights will be respected.

I agree with you. African leaders don't think long-term, they are never strategic. They are always ready to destroy the future of their youths to settle petty scores, incredible!

But we are close in the country to becoming a lawless state.

How else can one explain a CBN saying a Supreme Court order does not affect it because it was not joined in a suit in which the Federal government was ordered to maintain a status quo

I'm afraid our country is already a lawless state.

May this man never come near the presidency with his zero knowledge of the business world.

If you do zero transaction cost , how would the payment platform make money .

He has just killed the whole essence of new currency with his limited views , once kidnappers know of this , they will bounce back

We should destroy the economy because of kidnappers! Kettykin you are better than this.

If you don't know, the economy has been badly hit, many have made serious losses because of the implementation of this policy. Stakeholders were not widely consulted. The CBN even laughably admitted they were inadequately prepared for (and didn't foresee) the challenges we
are facing now. It took the Council of State to knock some sense into the sloppy-thinking CBN Governor.

I still don't understand why the whole country should burn because of kidnappers and a single politician. Are there not alternative ways to deal with this issue except subjecting the whole nation into a mindless ordeal.

Playing Machiavellian politics with people's lives and livelihoods (after failing woefully to protect us from marauding herdsmen, bandits and kidnappers) is not my idea of great statesmanship. The idea behind the policy wasn't bad; but the policy execution was, needless to say, satanic!

I'm afraid Tinubu's suggestions (to get us out of this mess) are on point.

He should create a state transport system that their cars can travel round the country.. look at Benue links, Adamawa sunshine,Taraba state transport corporation, Borno and the rest. This create stable income for drivers and lot.

If osun create something of that nature, I bet you more than 4000 people will be employed instantly.

Imagine state government buying 1k cars, that 1k drivers. Loaders, administrative personnel, managers in each state with it loaders.

Just thinking deep. I did my service year in osun and that part is left out

A burning desire for great governance usually provokes deep thinking for growth and development. The politicians we have now have passion for something else.

Obi has no chance at all this time. I believe Obi is better positioned for 2039! Sorry, Obidients. Better luck next time.

As for Atiku, he scored an own goal by discounting Wike's nuisance value. I wonder what Atiku's chances would have been, if he had picked Wike as running mate!

Politics / Re: Jaw-dropping Reasons Import Bans Have Never Worked In Nigeria by Volksfuhrer(m): 2:23am On Nov 13, 2019
The FG has done more harm over the years to Nigerians than all the states put together! Thank you for exposing the fallacies inherent in sloppy arguments advanced for banning imports.

Glistinin:

~Tosin Adeoti ...

But Dangote employs people, you say…

Yes, he does. According to the Company's 2018 Annual Report (15, Page 38), Dangote Cement has 17,447 direct employees. But I have always made the analogy of fuel scarcity to explain the irrationality of this argument. Hundreds of jobs across the country are created during periods of fuel scarcity. Several young men who would otherwise be sitting under the bridge are gainfully employed, moving jerrycans and easing the pains of car owners. So do you think it makes sense to protest for the government to make available regular fuel scarcity episodes?

Of course not. It's the same reason it makes no sense to praise the tens of thousands of jobs created by Dangote Cement cornering the market and making Nigerians pay through their nose when millions of jobs are waiting to be created by allowing geneuine competition in the cement industry and its attendant effect on the construction industry. Think of the businesses and employment waiting to be created if we are to bridge the 22 million housing deficit in Nigeria.

Our situation is dire. More than ever, we need entrepreneurs whose creative insights would unleash the potential in our economy. People like Dangote stand in the way of that...

...If you ban wheat, milk or vegetable oil today, as being advised by Aliko Dangote, the price will simply get beyond the reach of the masses, just like it's happened to rice and cement.

WHY DOES BANNING WORK ELSEWHERE AND NOT IN NIGERIA?

...there are two ways to judge this policy:

1. How competitive will the Nigerian fruit juice market be if we lift the ban today, 17 years later?
2. How strong is our exports?

On question 1, the Nigerian market will not be competitive. Remove the ban today and Nigerians will be attracted to the lesser prices of the foreign fruit juice products.
On question 2, we don't have a strong export market. In fact, Ghana which did not ban imports makes five times more than we do in exports (17).

In other words, the ban has not helped the country improve its domestic production, especially when you realize that while we have banned imported packaged fruit juice, we still import great amounts of juice concentrates (18). Companies import juice concentrates, mix it with water, bottle them up and transport them to the various markets in the country. We have mastered the art of deceiving ourselves...

...Import ban is not a magic wand or formula. Until what makes import ban work in other countries are in place, businessmen like Dangote who tout import bans as shortcuts to sufficiency in anything are only planning for your pockets.
