What may be motivating for one man can be a demotivating factor for another.

In the end passion, talent individual targets etc will Play a key role in keeping an artist long in the game.

Mr A may be satisfied with say a million bucks hence become demotivated to go on after achieving this. While even 10 million bucks will only motivate Mr B to go on and achieve more.

People are different and react to things differently bro!

The fear of not being famous again will not allow some of them to give up quickly.. They won't even mind dishing out rubbish just to stay in the game while some will just feel fulfilled after releasing one or two nice songs.
