Education / Ondo State NOUN Students Hail FG For Amended Act by YewandeAkinjewe: 9:06pm On Mar 25, 2019
Students of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Akure Study Centre have commended the Federal Government for signing the Amendment Act 2018 of the university.

The students who spoke in separate interviews with The Hope affirmed that the amendment act will allow those who are eligible to be mobilized for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Scheme to go for the programme and those who are reading Law to proceed for further training in the Law School after graduation.

According to a post-graduate student of the university, Mr. Oluwasegun Olaoye, it is a good development as the school will be recognized like other conventional universities.

“The school has been viewed as a part time school with no privilege of participating in NYSC. Meanwhile, the university is not substandard to others going by the programmes and study materials among others”, he said.

Also speaking, a 100 level student, Sarah Olakunle believed that the development will add value to the university.

“A lot of secondary school leavers who did not gain admission into conventional universities have opted for NOUN for university education. NOUN is a suitable school not only for the working class, but also for admission seekers who are tired of writing JAMB. Likewise, the working class needs the certificate to upgrade themselves”, she stressed.

A final year student of the university , Abiodun Lawal who noted that NYSC certificate is one of the requirements for getting employment, therefore commended the Federal Government for strengthen the university to provide Open and Distance Learning opportunities to millions of Nigerians.

Reacting to this, a law graduate, Mayowa Adegoroye averred that it is a great news for the law students who have been expecting changes in the law guiding NOUN establishment.

“We, the law graduates have been expecting this, the law school programme is very important for us because it will enable us to acquire more knowledge as a lawyer”, he stated.

To Courage Babatunde, a 300 level student, the joy of having NYSC experience and serving one’s nation cannot be over-emphasized. She therefore commended the Federal Government for the development.

It would be recalled that the Federal Government of Nigeria under President Mohammadu Buhari recently signed the NOUN amendment Act 2018.

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council of the university, Prof. Peter Okebukola recently said at a news conference in Lagos that with the amended act, the university is now placed at par with all recognized universities in Nigeria under the various provisions of higher education in Nigeria universities.

According to the governor, it is a decision that can only be taken by the House of Assembly and they would move the motion as their first assignment.
“You know we have Adekunle Ajasin University in Akungba and it won’t be bad to have Olusegun Agagu University in Okitipupa.
“When we came on board, we noticed that the University lacked infrastructural facilities, a good road network and other areas which we looked into and fixed.
“The project would have been added to the museum of abandoned projects, hence the need for the major upgrades by this administration”, he said.

I commend you specially for voting candidates of your choice into the State House of Assembly.

I must also express my appreciation to the leadership, officers and men of all the various security agencies whose alertness and efficiency ensured that our dear State remained a shining example of communal harmony.

For those who tried to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere we enjoy on account of their misguided partisanship, let me remind them that we will not relent in our commitment to ensuring the security of lives and property of our people in every part of the State, and we will not spare mischief makers and purveyors of violence.

I sincerely use this opportunity to express my condolences to the family of Mr. Ibrahim Okanlawon, the young corps member who served as INEC ad-hoc staff and who lost his life in a boat mishap in Ese-Odo Local Government Area.

Politics / The Road To 2019 In Ondo State by YewandeAkinjewe: 1:55pm On Feb 28, 2019
Written By Amudipe Opeyemi Marcus
Edited By Seyi Fasegha

The 2019 presidential election has come and gone leaving so much to talk about within the public circles of our socio-political system. Even as many will conclude that the results from each state is a testament of the things to come in the respective gubernatorial elections, it will be a hasty generalization to safely conclude, drawing inferences from the just concluded elections. Even though the People’s Democratic Party might have pulled a surprise, winning in Ondo State, nevertheless, it will be foolhardy to assume that the electoral result is a testament of the feeling of the good people of Ondo State towards the incumbent state governor, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu.

It is no gainsaying to note the tremendous success of the Akeredolu led government, in the history of the state, the state has witnessed a great paradigm shift in development and economic growth giving the state a new positive outlook, creating a great atmosphere for investment and even growth and development.

In less than 2 years, the Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, administration has shown total commitment to the welfare of the state workforce. On assumption of Office, Governor Akeredolu had promised that his government will not owe workers’ salary. Since February 2017 when he assumed office, his administration has been loyal to the promise. True to his words, the state governor has risen above the waters of the harsh economic realities, prioritizing the welfare of its workers by ensuring that their salaries are well and promptly paid.

Within two years in office, Akeredolu has kept to his promise of paying the salary arrears. Contrary to the expectations of some fifth columnists, the relationship between the governor and the workers is now more cordial than ever before. “The Governor does not view the payment of salary as an achievement; rather he sees it as a duty and responsibility of government.”

Through his infrastructural developments, Arakunrin Akeredolu is on the right path to redefining governance, reawakening progress in Ondo state.

Like no other administration before it, the government has kept to its promises by making both the people’s welfare and infrastructural development of the state its top priority

The road projects are evidential testimonies of Governor Akeredolu’s determination to implement all his campaign promises by executing projects that touch the lives of Ondo State people. The road rehabilitation and construction are spread across the three Senatorial Districts of the state. Some of the ongoing projects, 43 in total, include: Rehabilitation of selected roads in Ifon; construction of GRA dualisation road(2.5km) in Owo; dualisation of Ikare Township road; dualisation of Oke Alabojuto road, Ikare phase 1(0.5km); construction of selected roads in Idanre(2.76km); construction of Iwalewa-Alafiatayo, Iwalewa-Oshinle, Iwalewa-Hospital road and Abusoro road,Ijoka phase 1,construction of Alagbaka SIB-Appeal Court road(6.02km) and rehabilitation and construction of Oke Ogba Community road(5.412km). Also ongoing are: construction of Gaga Community road (5.569km); construction of dual carriageway from A division-Oluwatuyi-Ijoka (8.135km); rehabilitation of selected roads in Ondo town (7.11km); construction of Sabomi-Ajagba road(2.3km) and construction of Okitipupa-Igbokoda bypass road phase 1(10km).

These road projects will go a long way in making the state accessible and open for economic growth, opening doors for job creation and wealth creation, thereby leading to increased revenue, improving the lives of the people in the affected areas and ensuring sustainable economic development

In line with the governor’s promise to create massive jobs for the teaming youths, over 1,000 thousand youths are already trained on various aspects of agricultural production value chain as Agro-preneurs. 100 of these youths are already engaged and working on State owned farms. In addition, the state government has facilitated the training of 5000 youths on the same agricultural value chain by the National Directorate of Employment. The beneficiaries have been given their certificates and further programmes to assist them in establishing their projects has already commenced.

During the 2019 budget presentation, Governor Akeredolu stated, ‘On assumption of office, we met two (2) Mother and Child Hospitals, dedicated to cater for maternal and infant health challenges in the State. However, the two (2) institutions are located in the Central Senatorial Zone. In furtherance of our avowed commitment to equity and fairness, we have upgraded five (5) other health facilities to the Status of Mother and Child Hospitals in Ikare and Owo in the Northern Zone, as well as Ore, Okitipupa and Igbokoda, in the Southern Zone, to cater for our people in the other two (2) Senatorial Zones of the State. To address the dearth of Tertiary Health facility in the State, we have established the Teaching Hospital of the Ondo State University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, to fast track medical interventions in the health sector of the State’.

Also the state governor is unrelenting in his efforts to ensure that qualitative education is made available to all and sundry in the state. In the last one year, over 598 projects has been awarded in more than 501 primary schools across the three senatorial districts of the State. While teachers are being motivated to do better.

Judging from these performance, it is crystal clear that Arakunrin Akeredolu etched for himself a soft spot in the heart of the good people of Ondo state. The party losing out in the presidential election in Ondo state is merely a testament of the dysfunctional structure in the party which when addressed will put the party on a formidable track. Even as tough the road to the next gubernatorial election in Ondo State might seem for many gubernatorial aspirant, with the unending sustainable projects of Arakunrin Akeredolu, it might just be another stroll in the park.

Bitumen exploitation will not breed violence in Ondo

Ondo State Government has reiterated its commitment to ensure that the much awaited bitumen development in the state come to fruition without rancour between the host communities and the investors.

The state Commissioner for Regional Integration and Special Duties, Prof. Bayonile Ademodi stated this at the weekend, during an interactive session with bitumen bearing communities in Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State held at the local government secretariat hall in Okitipupa.

According to him, the interactive session became imperative, considering the recurrent crisis in the Niger Delta region of the country as a result of unhealthy relationship amoung the communities and investors which had culminated in all manners of criminal activities.

He stressed that the government was highly committed to peaceful exploitation of the bitumen resources in the state, noting that a similar interactive session had been carried out in Irele local government.

The commissioner, who informed the gathering that the ministry had concluded arrangement with the state ministry of Environment to work out modalities for evolving effective environmental protection strategies that the license bitumen companies must comply with, posited that they would do everything possible to ensure that the companies observe all the internationally acceptable practice of Environmental Impact Assessment(EIA) before commencing operations.

While assuring the Royal Fathers and the community leaders that their views would be adequately captured and implemented to the best level of practice as the process move forward, he said there are immense benefits the development of bitumen will bring to the host communities ranging from direct and indirect employment to physical development.

The commissioner added that the Federal Government, who has the responsibility of awarding bitumen blocks, has allocated blocks to five companies within the bitumen belt of the state.

He equally disclosed that they had concluded arrangement to formally form a Bitumen Production Advocacy Club (B-PAC) where members will cut across the various bitumen bearing communities with their roles well spelt out.

Politics / PMB Inaugurates Advanced Cancer Treatment Centre In Lagos by YewandeAkinjewe: 8:30pm On Feb 09, 2019
WE PROMISED, AND WE ARE FULFILLING, SAYS PRESIDENT BUHARI AS HE INAUGURATES ADVANCED CANCER TREATMENT CENTRE IN LAGOS

President Muhammadu Buhari Saturday inaugurated the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) advanced Cancer treatment centre in Lagos, with a pledge to ensure that facilities for the prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of cancer are available to many more Nigerians.

At the inauguration ceremony of the state-of-the-art Centre in LUTH, Idi Araba, President Buhari announced that the model will be replicated across the country to bring quality, first-class healthcare services to cancer patients in Nigeria.

‘‘We are aware that up to 40% of funds spent by Nigerians on medical tourism is attributable to patients seeking treatment for cancer. Despite having an increasing number of citizens suffering from cancer, we until now, had only two working radiotherapy machines in the country.

‘‘Working through the NSIA and LUTH we utilized a PPP model that unlocked investment capital to directly address this issue. We will replicate this model across the country to bring quality, first-class healthcare services to as many Nigerians as we can.

‘‘Indeed, over the coming months, under our leadership, the NSIA will commission two Modern Medical Diagnostic Centres to be co-located in the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano State and the Federal Medical Centre Umuahia, Abia State, respectively, bringing additional investment to Nigeria’s healthcare sector,’’ he said.

The President while wishing the management of the hospital good luck in operating the centre, emphasized the need for maintenance of the equipment.

‘‘Our goal today is not simply to celebrate and applaud the culmination of months of hard work to achieve this objective. Neither is it solely to revel in the successful completion of the most modern and best-equipped Cancer treatment centre in West Africa.

‘‘Indeed we are proud, but we recognize that this modest effort to address the gaps in our tertiary healthcare system alone is insufficient to address all the challenges faced by the sector.

‘‘Today, we showcase what feats we can accomplish when we are together, unrelenting in our effort to deliver a common objective.

‘‘No one ever prays to be diagnosed with Cancer, but if they are, what we have made possible here today is the hope that a true chance of survival and good quality of life becomes part of the story of many Nigerian patients with cancer,’’ he said.

The President promised that his administration, which has introduced programmes to alleviate common diseases, including the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund targeted at ensuring access to primary healthcare for all Nigerians, will continue to push hard to raise awareness about cancer, educate the people and facilitate early diagnosis.

He noted that this objective was part of his solemn commitment to Nigerians four years ago to improve the quality of health care in the country.

The President, who performed the ceremony after attending the APC presidential campaign rally at the Teslim Balogun Stadium Surulere, Lagos, said his administration had focused on greater investment in the sector and worked hard to ensure increased access to safe, high-quality healthcare.

‘‘We promised to effect policies that would remove debilitating constraints on the sector and create sustainable structures to strengthen our healthcare institutions.

'‘Today, we are gathered here to acknowledge the modest but laudable strides we are making in fulfilling that promise. We recognize that progress in the health sector is handicapped by several bottlenecks.

‘‘Accordingly, we have worked and we will continue to work to ensure that systems are introduced to bridge these gaps,’’ he said.

The President told the audience at LUTH that the Federal Government has created an enabling environment for institutions such as the NSIA to help fund high impact projects on time and on budget, thereby delivering immense value for our people.

‘‘In the case of the Cancer Centre, we can measure this value in currency, but we prefer to measure the value in terms of its social impact, the number of lives of Nigerians that will be saved and positively affected as well as the impact of capacity building for our people,’’ he said.

In his remarks at the inauguration ceremony, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NSIA, Mr. Uche Orji said the Centre is expected to raise the bar in the quality and standard of cancer treatment in Nigeria with outcomes that would be consistent with the 2030 agenda for sustainable development.

‘‘In addition, this Centre will demonstrate the economic potential of healthcare investments in Nigeria and catalyse increased private sector participation,” he said.

Also speaking, Professor Chris Bode, Chief Medical Director, LUTH, noted that the Centre is world-class and no Nigerian cancer patient needs to travel abroad again to receive treatment easily obtainable at home.

‘‘We, therefore, want to assure Your Excellency that we shall give what it takes to run this Centre as a pride to all Nigerians. NSIAs investment is not only safe but will yield ample dividend to encourage other deep pocket investors to open up the health sector as a veritable investors’ haven, ’’ he said.

Also speaking, the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole described the Centre as the single largest investment in cancer treatment in the country by any administration since independence.

Prof. Adewole added that the facility can cater for 100 patients daily and provide training for over eighty healthcare professionals, among many others.

Politics / Afenifere Advices Oke To Stay Off Politics by YewandeAkinjewe: 9:57am On Feb 05, 2019
The South West Director General of Buhari Campaign Organisation, Chief Olusola Oke, on Monday, advised leaders and members of the Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, to refrain from politics and endorsing any of candidate ahead of the forthcoming election.

He noted that the group has been divided, saying a faction of the group is supporting Buhari while the other groups are supporting Atiku, advising the group to leave politics for politicians.

Oke who stated this during a press conference to herald the visit of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential candidate, President Muhammadu Buhari, frowned over the open endorsement of candidates by the factions of the group.

Oke maintained that Afenifere, as a socio-cultural group is not supposed to delve into politics or pitching tent with any candidate but should concentrate on social and cultural issues and not politics.

He, however, said the endorsement of the Afenifere group would not determine the fate or fortune of Buhari in the forthcoming election saying the south-west people would vote for APC and its candidate.

Oke who queried the influence of Afenifere on any election said “Is Afenifere truly a group that can muster vote for a candidate? But I am sure that the endorsement of the group will not take away the chance of Buhari in this election.

Speaking on the reasons the south west people would vote for again for Buhari’s re-election, Oke said “one thing we cannot take away from this government is its philosophy which tallies with the philosophy of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who believe that the resources of the state should be devoted to the welfare of the people who believe that there must be transparency and accountability in governance.

According to him, “generally and in particular, the Ondo state people and the Yoruba people of south-west states should support Buhari for repositioning ourcountry.

The oil which was the major drive of our economy was 124 dollar per barrel, earning Nigeria unprecedented income but unfortunately, that was when the nation’s infrastructure was worst, that was when the security of the nation was most challenging, when corruption was at its peak, unemployment was the order of the day and hunger is written on the faces of the common man and Nigeria went into recession

Oke, however, canvassed support for Buhari ahead of the election, urging the people of the region to vote en masse for Buhari based on his present achievements.

He said in the area of infrastructure, the rail has always being a source of transportation even in the colonial days but this sector collapsed for over 40 years unattended to, but nobody cannot deny that this sector has been revived today.

He said the Yoruba nation has benefitted from Buhari’s administration, assuring that more developmental projects would be initiated in the region with the re-election of Buhari.

He said “the Yoruba nation has no doubt contributed to the success story of this administration, without the south-west, there will be no APC. Without the Yoruba, there would be no Buhari administration.
