1979,Jimmy Carter seeking re-nomination but his presidency is plagued by; a weakening U.S. economy due to high gas prices brought about by the advent of the OPEC cartel, fierce competition from then emerging Japan, Social strife in the form of returnee Vietnam Vets with obvious PTSD, wide-spread drug use.
Also the average American perceptions of themselves is at an all time low from the baby-booming generations of the 50's and 60's space age program. Carter is seen as a weakling by conservative voters since he never came from the pedigree class of politicians before him such as Eisenhower, JFK, LBJ, Nixon. In-short carter was from a simple background and a farmer before becoming POTUS.
Carter wanted to fix the U.S. economy by cutting on defense spending but sparing cuts to social services and even funding further other social projects such as Medicare, education.

Now fast forward to 2012, the parallels of an Obama presidency and that of Carter are strikingly similar.
Obama inherited a war, bad economy and a lowered self-pride of Americans. A man from similar humble backgrounds, Obama has made it clear that he will cut defense spending. The republicans are kicking hard against this as well as the neo-cons in the pentagon and CIA.


Now, Carter lost his re-election to Reagan but how did this happen? First you have to review the IRAN-CONTRA Saga.
On an election year (just like what we have now) the U.S. Embassy in Tehran was overrun by protesting hard-line Iranian students. A siege and hostage situation dragged on and negotiations were going nowhere. Jimmy Carter decided to send in a SEAL Team to breach and rescue the American hostages.It never happened. The SEAL Team was intercepted and their helicopter was shot down. There was no survivors. What will be later
revealed during the Reagan administration was that the Iranians were tipped off by the pentagon of the raid. The saga later became known as the IRAN-CONTRA Scandal.
Reagan was able to negotiate with the Revolutionary Iranian Govt before getting into office, that he will supply the Iranian govt with missiles once elected via Israel but that the Iranians should not negotiate with Carter.
The Iranians where further tipped off by the neo-cons when Carter ordered a rescue mission. After being elected Reagan was swiftly able to negotiate a release of the hostages.
