What Are Our Leaders Doing About Making Food Cheap??? by trium(op): 4:05pm On Oct 16, 2024
This topic is a tip off from the thread about cost of food in the North. I am a historian and I like that footage of the past can now be seen online. One commenter posted a great idea about CNG but my question was, why do we need complicated things when we used to have simple things that worked in the pasthuh

Fun fact: did you know that Nigerians from every part produced and exported food to feed Congo in the pasthuh

Argungu fishing festival was held just to produce fish for them shocked

See how food produce was transported even with manual labour. Food prices will be cheap

My response to the post, do you agree

If those food delivery trucks and trailers in the uploaded image and elsewhere have dual CNG-gasoline hybrid fuel installed in them, that would instantly drive the cost of haulage and food sold in the markets down. Nigeria is more if a gas-producing country than a crude oil country because of the massive gas reserves which have more value in USD than the fast-depleting crude oil reserves.

With the geopolitical tensions and war between the Israeli on one hand and Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and Iran on the other hand, if things escalate further and Israel massively bombs Iran as planned, the international price per barrel of crude oil will further rise thereby causing a massive spike in the pump price in many countries and also make absolute nonsense of the cost of feeding and transportation that folks in Nigeria are currently complaining about. A rapid and massive deployment of CNG (methane) fuel [which is far cheaper than PMS at N200 to N230 per standard cubic feet of CNG from NNPC and NIPCO CNG refill stations] and CNG conversion kits or outrightly purchase already factory-produced large CNG trucks and buses by the states such as Niger, Kano, Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Delta, Edo, Imo, Rivers, etc, and the central government is what would prevent the spread of more hyperinflation thereby making nonsense of the so-called minimum wage that is being implemented by some states.

The hyperinflation though is LARGELY a mix of artificial inflation due to greed and speculations, illegal toll collection by revenue agents on interstate routes, and illegal checkpoints where some security agents collect bribes. These have gone on unchecked for years since the days of the brutal military dictatorships in Nigeria, and have to be tackled immediately by the governments at all levels in order to remove these food distribution inefficiencies on interstate routes. Period.
We used to have trains. Trains can haul x10 of an average trailer. It is faster too.

Watch this documentary to see how The British transported and exported our food in the 50s. It is not hard, it is the wickedness and selfishness the OP listed that has made the politicians to ignore the simple things that used to work before. You will see yam in the documentary that OP is talking about again shocked

My conclusion is

OUR POLITICIANS WHO LEAD US ARE THE WICKED ONES. VERY WICKED PEOPLE.

Imagine wasting the opportunity of leadership to make people poor. Give them basic amenities and life will be easier. If leaders display good behaviour, the people, their sheep will follow.

See the Singapore PM on a flight with his citizens, yet my President who his wife
says is not greedy bought a new plane when the country is hungry. I can blame people but leaders have more influence to change the way people think and behave

I once suggested massive food import into storages(national grain reserve).

Let me also add that kits can be distributed to allow people grow things through hydroponics in small private spaces. Drip kits also. The people up there are deaf and only love mega projects that preserves looting prospect and margin in a central and accessible medium.

Can we take this up like a food emergencyhuh

I don't see any reason for palliatives. Let us delcare a state of emergency first people must eat first to survive. Even the man without a house still looks for food first. I cited Tinubu's jet earlier but that does not absolve the others, LG councillors and Chairs, State Governors and everyone in a position of leadership.

Kurubu should give an order for police and tax collectors not to stop any car or truck transporting food in the country and watch prices collapse.

Market food unions should also be disbanded.

@Trium, succinctly stated!

I ABSOLUTELY agree with you (as a solutions-based man myself who likes to see the deployment of creative solutions in solving global societal problems and NOT complain unnecessarily and ramble irritatingly about issues) that the rail cargo haulage that was used pre-1960 and post-1960 (till about the mid-1980s) to move agricultural and non-agricultural cargo back-and-forth between the North and South of Nigeria is a large aspect of the ULTIMATE solution to reducing hyperinflation and food costs within a short space of time. Although the Abuja-Kaduna rail line got ruthlessly attacked with some people killed and kidnapped by terrorists in 2022, there are advanced satellite tracking and imaging devices, small surveillance drones and attack drones that can be deployed rapidly along the rail tracks to ensure that the rail freight cargo and rail passenger movements are NOT disrupted ever again.

A few months ago in 2024, I read online that the Nigerian Railway Corporation boss gave hints that the NRC is going to refit all their trains to use CNG (methane) as well to drastically reduce costs. This would give an extra advantage in reducing the price of commodities moving interstate. I get a sense too that some folks in government who should have a sense of URGENCY are NOT doing so by releasing urgent funds for this CNG project for the trains because they do NOT seem to understand fully that time wasting can trigger a major social unrest that they will NOT be able to control. In a worse case scenario, a military coup could occur right out of that spontaneous social unrest, and based off of the fact that past military dictatorships in Nigeria are even far WORSE in terms of massive corruption and repression of free speech in the decades past, it's better for these politicians to wake up and NOT take the folks for granted because the solutions to make the Nigerian economy more robust and reduce food and drug prices... and hyperinflation are RIGHT there in front of everyone to see! It's just for these multi-millionaire and multi-billionaire rich guys right from the Presidency and the Governors to come down to the street level and relate with the people on that same street level in order to know what their daily needs and wants are. It's NOT rocket science. They should "just do it!"

Last but not least, I also saw a Channels Television video a few months back in 2024 indicating that the Lagos State Goverment is gearing up to refit all their water transportation ferries and boats (that ply the water routes between Lagos Mainland and other islands such as Victoria Island) with CNG fuel kits in order to save cost and also reduce transportation fares.

I do not yet have new updates on how far these CNG refits for the Nigerian Railway trains and the water transportation and ferry services in Lagos State have gone, but it shows that some folks are thinking creatively. Robust implementation that everyone can see and feel is the key.

I appreciate your brilliant, insightful feedback here. Enjoy the rest of your day.

Cheers.

I would have thought that ENDSARS would have opened everyone's eyes. If you lived among the masses, those who were able to bring their communities to calm were those who provided food before the 20.20.20 shootings. These are private efforts and shows you how man can be tamed if food is provided.

I read some weeks ago some people calling out APC for this palliative and rice distribution. That thing started during COVID and it is a lazy form of governance sponsored by then PDP Governor Ayo Fayose's Stomach Infrastructure. Politicians have seized the hunger in the land as an opportunity to notice me for the next election. It is not sustainable and long term. I urge all parties irrespective of political ideology to see this as an emergency to rescue Nigeria before it is too late. Nigeria must produce again.

The documentaries of the 60s make me sad because even with the manual labour, we were arull producing. Today, we hardly produce but we want to use the best cars, phones and gadgets. Production will keep our youth busy and we can export. See Nigeria that used to give food to other African countries in the past cry

Giant of Africa title was earned by our production and charity to the rest of Africa.

Nicely put.

That term "palliatives" is just a load of nonsense and an insult to the sensibilities of all folks of Nigerian Descent in the Diaspora and in Nigeria tbh. Nigeria being a gas-based economy with huge gas reserves which is worth more in USD than the current crude oil reserves, and Nigeria also has the second largest bitumen reserves in the world after that of Canada (the bitumen belt extends from Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, and Edo States, with Ondo State having the biggest reserve worth MORE than all the Nigerian crude oil reserves in USD) should NEVER be involved in using such words like palliatives at this point in human history.

Southern resources again? No, instead, let the N1+ Trillion yearly intervention to farming be used well and let there be food.
