MY APPROACH TO PRE-PLANTING LAND PREPARATION FOR CASSAVA CULTIVATION

I learnt it from my lawyer friend who is also a successful cassava farmer at Owode-egba side of Ogun state. The approach has been working well for me, as it helps save on excessive expenses and time often spend on multiple weeding, post planting.
One has to ensure that all the bushes, trees and stumps on the farmland are thoroughly cleared before the rainfall for the new planting season begins.

The cut bushes are left on the farmland unburnt, until the first serious rainfall occurs. Three to four sunny days are enough to dry up the cut bushes, and it is then set on fire to burn off.

The cleared and burnt farmland is now left for two to three weeks to weed up, or until the new weeds get to ankle level. That is when one can then apply any active Glyphosate herbicide. I prefer using 'Slasher'. You can go back after about three days to check and do spot spraying on the needed areas.

One can then commence ploughing or ridging of the farmland afterwards.
You can then plant the farm immediately and do the application of 'LAGON' pre-emergence herbicide within 24-48 hours of planting. That is all.

With this step-by-step land preparation system, one is rest assured that the farm would be weed free for complete 2-3 months after planting. The only form of weeds that could be noticed on the farm during this period are minor growth from stumps, which can be removed with cutlass or spot spraying.

This system will help you limit post planting weeding to only two times maximum. It could even be only once if branched cassava variety is planted.

It is working for me. It is not too late for you too, to give it a trial.
