Farming in Nigeria? It’s not beans o

If you’ve ever tried to grow cassava, manage poultry, process palm oil, or even run a small agro-business, you’ll agree with me that it’s a whole different ball game. And let’s be real, it’s not for the faint-hearted.

Some days, it’s labour wahala. Other days, it's market access that threatens to scatter everything. Then throw in the unpredictable weather, unstable input prices, lack of mechanization, or the ever-present challenge of getting real funding without using your great-grandfather’s land as collateral.

For me, I’ve seen how these issues wear on people, especially when they’re passionate but not getting the needed support.

But here's my question to you and I want us to keep it real.

What’s the ONE challenge in your farming or agribusiness journey that gives you the most headache? Just one.

Please, if you can't relate with people's reality, it's not a must to comment. Let all responses be made with wisdom and understanding.

Now, Let’s share. No forming. Because what you’re struggling with might be what someone else has overcome and your experience might just help someone else break through.

Let’s learn from each other. Who knows? This could spark some powerful connections and solutions.

So, talk to me. what’s that one thing? Drop it in the comments.

Soldier ants make me sleep late at night especially on cool nights if it rained that day. I've lost several young birds (boiler and turkey) to soldier ants. I'd also lost rabbits to them when I used to rear rabbits. Their most common operating hours is between 10 and 12am at night. So I often stay will around 1am and go round the farm before going to bed

I use Rambo insect powder on them and they'll run away for that night.

Yeah, they'll definitely come another day. It may even be the same week. In fact, one time I dispersed them by just throwing sand, they came back the same day through a different route. But when they are killed, they'll go for the day.

Yes they are carnivorous. They devour animals. Especially young ones. My worst experience with them was one night where they ate 14 out of 17 less than 2 weeks old turkeys. The 3 that survived were those that were able to run out through a small opening in their pen. The mother hen had some of them on it but it wasn't seriously injured. When I went to their pen in the morning, it was as if the 17 turkeys had disappeared. Then I noticed soldier ants and looked more closely to see several small flat patches of feathers. I soon heard the notice of the 3 survivors outside their pen.

Modified:
It was so devastating. I was just too tired that night and decided to sleep early. That's how I lost 14 turkeys overnight
