How to lower water pH that is 9.0

To lower a fish pond's pH of 9.0 to a fish-friendly range of 6.5–7.5. Begin by testing water quality with a digital pH Meter to confirm the pH and monitor ammonia, nitrites, and dissolved oxygen as well.

Gradually introduce organic acids like fermented cassava water (from soaked cassava, rich in lactic acid) or palm wine, at a rate of 1–2 liters per 1,000 gallons, diluted and added over hours to avoid shocking fish.

Empty giant snail shells, can be placed in a porous bag in the pond for 3–4 hours to neutralize acidity and stabilize pH. Peat moss or dried banana leaves, release tannins when submerged, naturally lowering pH.

Cow dung or poultry manure (5000 kg/ha), applied 3 days after liming, can enhance pond fertility while buffering pH, though it must be used cautiously to avoid oxygen depletion.

Ensure proper aeration with a pump to stabilize water chemistry. Retest pH daily, adjusting slowly, and perform 10–20% water changes with borehole or river water to maintain stability.

Avoid using rainwater or chlorine treated tap water, as they may be too acidic or harmful. Monitor for algae blooms, which can raise pH, and buy our ebooks (Promo price for only today <N3000> for 6 ebook instead of N7500; and also buy our digital pH meter for (N28,000).
