AGRICULTURAL LIME aka Aglime, agricultural limestone, or liming, should not be confudes with lime or lemon citrus orange. It is a soil additive made from pulverized limestone, powder or chalk. The primary active component is calcium carbonate. Additional chemicals include calcium oxide called quick lime .


Uses of lime in agriculture

(i) It is applied to the soil to neutralize soil acidity.
(ii) improves soil structure.
(iii) releases calcium ions (Ca ++) to plants for tissue development.
(iv) increases rate of water percolation in clay soil.
(v) reduces the toxicity of dissolved copper and mangenese in the soil.
(vi) serves as additional source of calcium for bone development in fish.
(vii) reduces turgidity in fish ponds through flocculation property.
(viii) enhances the release of some nutrient elements e.g. phosphorus.
Liming is recommended for vegetable.growers, tree crop growers, ect

Testing the soil can help you determine where and when lime is needed as well as how much.
