Livestock is the domesticated animals raised in an agricultural setting for various products and services, such as meat, milk, eggs, fiber (wool and leather), and labor. The practice of caring for and breeding these animals is called animal husbandry.

Farming Practices and Considerations

Livestock farming methods range from extensive systems where animals graze on pastures to intensive farming (factory farming) that houses large numbers of animals in confined spaces.

Modern animal husbandry practices focus on maximizing productivity while also addressing animal welfare, environmental impacts (such as greenhouse gas emissions and waste management), and public health concerns like the use of antibiotics.

Common Types of Livestock

1, Cattle:
Raised primarily for beef, veal, milk, and leather.

2, Sheep:
Valued for wool, meat (lamb and mutton), and sometimes milk.

3, Goats:
Provide milk, meat, hides, and cashmere or mohair wool.

4, Pigs/Swine:
Raised for pork and bacon.

5, Poultry:
Includes chickens, ducks, geese, and turkeys, raised for meat and eggs.

6, Equine:
Horses, donkeys, and mules are often used for labor, transportation, and recreation.

Importance of Livestock

1, Food Security and Nutrition:
Animals provide nutrient-dense sources of high-quality protein, essential amino acids, iron, zinc, and Vitamin B12, contributing significantly to human dietary needs globally.

2, Economic Value:
The livestock industry generates revenue and jobs for millions of people worldwide. Animals also act as a financial safety net and insurance against crop failures for many farming families.

3, Agricultural Sustainability:
Livestock contribute to a cyclical farming system. They convert forages and crop residues that humans cannot digest into usable products, and their manure is a valuable organic fertilizer for crops.

4, Byproducts and Services:
Beyond food, livestock provide numerous non-food products like leather, wool, and ingredients used in pharmaceuticals, industrial proteins, and various consumer goods (e.g., lipstick, candles). Some are still used for draft power in plowing fields and transportation.
