Harvesting By Tolulope Tejumola ilori

Harvesting are critical agricultural process of gathering mature crops from the field at the end of a growing season.
It marks the transition from cultivation to the food supply chain, directly impacting the quality and quantity of the final produce.

Key Considerations

1, Timing:
Harvesting too early leads to underdeveloped grains, while harvesting too late increases risks from pests, weather damage, or shattering.

2, Weather Conditions:
Ideally, harvesting occurs during dry, sunny weather to avoid mold and fungal growth.

3, Post-Harvest Handling:
Immediate handling, such as cooling, drying, and proper storage, is vital to extending shelf life and maintaining nutritional value.

Methods of Harvesting

1, Manual Harvesting:
Farmers gather crops by hand, often by pulling roots or picking fruits and vegetables.

2, Hand Tool Harvesting:
Uses traditional tools like sickles or scythes to cut grains and grasses close to the ground.

3, Mechanical Harvesting:
Employs advanced machinery like combine harvesters, which can reap, thresh, and clean grains in a single operation.

The Harvesting Process For grains

1, Reaping:
Cutting the mature plant from the ground.

2, Threshing:
Loosening the edible part (grain) from the husks and straw.

3, Winnowing:
Separating the heavier grain from the lighter chaff using air or wind.

4, Cleaning & Sorting:
Removing debris, dust, and grading the produce based on quality.

5, Bagging & Storage:
Packaging grains and storing them in temperature-controlled silos or granaries to prevent spoilage.
