Cattle farming By Tolulope Tejumola ilori Cattle farming is the agricultural industry focused on raising cattle (bovines) for meat, dairy, leather, and draft labor. Types of Cattle Farming: 1, Beef Cattle Farming: Focuses on meat production (beef). It includes Cow-Calf operations (breeding and weaning calves), Stocker/Backgrounding (growing weaned calves on pasture), and Feedlots (intensive finishing to reach market weight). 2, Dairy Cattle Farming: Intensive operations focused on milk production. Cows are typically milked twice daily and must give birth to a calf once a year to maintain lactation. 3, Draft or Labor: Utilizing "oxen" (castrated males) for heavy agricultural tasks like plowing and hauling, common in developing regions. 4, Seedstock/Breeding: Operations that specialize in genetics, selling high-quality bulls or heifers to other producers. Production Methods: 1, Conventional (Feedlot): Cattle are finished in Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) on a high-grain diet to gain weight quickly. This often includes growth hormones and preventive antibiotics. 2, Grass-Fed/Pasture-Raised: Cattle spend their entire lives on pasture, eating only forage (grass, hay). This is land-intensive but caters to specialized markets. 3, Organic: Requires exclusive organic feed, access to outdoors/pasture, and prohibits antibiotics or growth hormones. Economic and Environmental Impact: 1, Economic Value: The U.S. beef industry is a major global player, with top export markets in 2024 including Japan, South Korea, and China. 2, Environmental Concerns: Cattle farming contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions (specifically methane from digestion) and is a primary driver of global deforestation and water pollution from nutrient runoff. 3, Animal Welfare: Practices such as dehorning and castration are common but increasingly scrutinized for lack of anesthesia in industrial settings. Management Essentials: 1, Nutrition: Diets consist of roughage (fiber from grass/hay) and concentrates (grains/protein for energy and growth). 2, Health: Producers must follow regular vaccination cycles for diseases like Anthrax and Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD). 3, Infrastructure: Essential needs include secure fencing, clean water sources, ventilated shelters, and handling equipment (pens, chutes). 💯 |
