Soil are "living skin" of the Earth, forming a thin, complex layer that supports virtually all terrestrial life. It is a dynamic ecosystem consisting of a mixture of
1, minerals,
2, organic matter,
3, water,
4, air.

Soil vs. Dirt

While often used interchangeably, soil scientists distinguish them by context: soil is a living, productive ecosystem in its natural place, while dirt is "displaced soil" (e.g., on your clothes) that has lost its complex biological community.

Composition:

1, Minerals (45%):
Derived from the weathering of rocks, categorized by size into sand (large), silt (medium), and clay (tiny).

2, Organic Matter (5%):
Includes living organisms (bacteria, fungi, earthworms) and humus (decomposed plant and animal remains).

3, Pore Space (50%):
Half filled with water (carrying nutrients) and half with air (providing oxygen to roots and microbes).

Soil Horizons :

1, O Horizon:
The organic surface layer of leaves and needles.

2, A Horizon (Topsoil):
The most fertile layer, rich in humus and teeming with biological activity.

3, B Horizon (Subsoil):
Accumulates minerals and clays leached from above.

4, C Horizon (Parent Material):
Partially broken-down rock from which the soil formed.

5, R Horizon:
Solid bedrock beneath the soil.

Key Functions:

1, Plant Growth:
Provides physical support, water, and essential nutrients (like Nitrogen and Phosphorus).

2, Water Regulation:
Acts as a giant sponge, absorbing rainwater to prevent floods and filtering it to purify groundwater.

3, Climate Control:
Soil is a massive carbon reservoir, storing more carbon than the atmosphere and all living vegetation combined.

4, Biodiversity Habitat:
A single teaspoon of healthy soil can contain more microorganisms than there are people on Earth.

Formation Factors:

1, Climate
(temperature and rainfall).

2,Relief
(topography and slope).

3, Organisms
(plants, animals, and microbes).

4, Parent material
(the original rock type).

5, Time
(it can take 500 to 1,000 years to form just one inch of topsoil).
