Over the years in agriculture, I’ve had the opportunity to establish different plantation crops and observe how they perform over time. Recently, we allocated about 100 hectares on one of our farm locations for a Nairalander. He plans to secure a bank loan to develop the plantation, and at his request we decided to post this here to also get additional practical feedback from experienced farmers and investors in this section. The three crops currently under consideration are: • Oil Palm (improved varieties) • Cocoa (TC series) • Cashew We have already shared our own practical experience and observations, but he is still interested in hearing perspectives from other farmers and investors actively involved in plantation agriculture. If you were in his position and had 100 hectares ready for development, which of these crops would you prioritize and why? He will be going through the comments and learning from the insights shared here. He may also require seedlings and plantation management services, so contributions from members with practical experience in establishing these crops would be appreciated.

One observation from our previous plantation projects is that maintenance structure can affect profitability more than the crop itself. Oil palm requires consistent management but can produce for decades. Cashew seems easier to manage but yield varies depending on location and variety. For those currently managing plantations, which of these crops has been more stable for you over the long term? |

A man who can not do research and agree on what to grow wants to take a loan and invest in 100 hectare plantation. I see tears ahead. Moreover he is getting "consultant" to advice him on what to grow, another red flag. My advice, tell him to learn to walk before attempting to run. He should not take any loan, he should start with what he has and start small, in a couple of years time he can expand. On the choice of crops to grow, he should grow what his farm location is optimal for. In the southwest cocoa or cashew is fine. In the South south and south east, oil palm is fine. But he should also check his own technical knowledge before choosing what to grow. He should grow the crops that he has good knowledge on and that can do well in his farm location. If he is in the south west, cocoa is good if he knows how to.maintain the plantation. If is knowledge is deficient, then he should do cashew in the south west or oilpalm in the south south and south east. Cocoa yield is very much affected by the field maintenance more than the case with oilpalm and cashew |
