Nigerians in Diaspora — Are You Building Back Home or Just Sending Money? Many Nigerians abroad work extremely hard. UK. Canada. US. UAE. Remittances into Nigeria are billions yearly. But here’s the question: Are you building productive assets back home, or just sending money monthly? Sending money is good. But assets multiply impact. Farmland — especially perennial crops like Cocoa Plantation and Oil Palm — is one of the easiest diaspora-friendly assets because: • It doesn’t require daily presence • It has long lifespan • It can be professionally managed • It appreciates with land value Diaspora Nigerians often invest in: Houses Shortlets Urban land Which is good. But rural productive land is still undervalued. And here’s something important: Global cocoa demand does not depend on Nigeria’s local economy alone. |

SuprymBean:I think the situation is a bit more complex than that looking at your comment and more importantly the caption on the graphics you attached along your comment. You see, many Nigerians abroad didn’t leave because they hate Nigeria. Most left "japa" because they were searching for stability, better systems, and opportunities for their families. At the same time, migration doesn’t necessarily mean someone has to completely disconnect from building assets back home. In fact, if you look at countries that developed rapidly in the past few decades, diaspora capital played a huge role. For example, many overseas citizens of India, Vietnam, and China invested heavily back home while living abroad. The real question may not be “japa or stay?” It may actually be: “While living abroad, what productive assets are you building in Nigeria?” Sending money to family helps in the short term, but building income-producing assets is what creates long-term stability for future generations. Historically, some of the most durable assets Nigerians have built locally include: 🔷farmland and plantations 🔷manufacturing ventures 🔷real estate development These are things that continue producing value whether the owner is in Lagos, London, or Toronto. So perhaps the more useful conversation is how Nigerians — both at home and in the diaspora — can participate in building productive sectors of the economy, especially agriculture, which Nigeria once dominated globally. |

SuprymBean:One interesting thing many diaspora Nigerians discover when they begin researching agriculture is that some perennial crops planted today can still be producing decades later. Crops like cocoa and oil palm can remain productive for 40–70 years with proper management. That’s why in many countries, plantations are treated almost like long-term family assets. |

Don't just buy land. Buy land to farm to earn income that's going to add value to you WiseBizInvestor: |

delefresh:You’ve captured a very important point there. Many people focus on simply owning land, but the real question is what the land is doing for you. Land that sits idle is mostly a store of value, but land that is put into productive use becomes an income-producing asset. That distinction is what separates ordinary land ownership from agricultural investment. Historically, some of the most enduring forms of wealth around the world came from productive land — plantations, orchards, vineyards, and other long-term agricultural enterprises. Once properly established and managed, those assets keep producing value year after year. Nigeria actually built much of its early economic strength from crops like cocoa and palm produce before the oil era. Countries that later adopted similar plantation systems, such as Malaysia and Indonesia, eventually turned them into multi-billion-dollar export industries. So the mindset shift many people are beginning to make now is this: instead of just buying land to hold, buy land that can work for you and generate income over time. |

One thing many diaspora Nigerians are beginning to realize is that food security is becoming one of the most valuable sectors globally. Assets like cocoa and oil palm plantations are long-term wealth structures because demand keeps increasing every year. |
