Why Nigerians Spend Millions on Hospitals but Almost Nothing on Healthy Land

Let’s talk honestly about something many people don’t like to hear.

Nigeria’s health conversations usually focus on:
• hospitals
• drugs
• surgeries
• medical bills

But we rarely talk about the foundation of health — what we eat and where it comes from.

Many Nigerians now suffer from lifestyle diseases such as:

✔hypertension

✔diabetes

✔obesity

✔digestive issues

And ironically, many of these problems are linked to poor food quality and ultra-processed diets.

Traditional Nigerian diets used to rely heavily on natural produce grown locally.

✅Palm oil from local mills.
✅Fresh vegetables from farms.
✅Cocoa used in natural beverages.

But as urbanization increased, many people became disconnected from food production entirely.

Today most city residents have no relationship with agriculture except buying food at the market.

That disconnect has consequences.

In countries like Japan and Italy, many families maintain strong links with farming or natural food sources.

Some even keep small agricultural assets.

In Nigeria however, farmland ownership is often seen as “village work”.

Yet farmland determines:
✔ food quality
✔ food security
✔ environmental balance
✔ long-term economic stability

Even major agricultural crops like cocoa and oil palm support entire food ecosystems.

Palm oil alone is used in numerous traditional meals across West Africa.

Cocoa supports global food and beverage industries.

But beyond the commercial value, agriculture reminds us of something deeper:

Health begins from the soil.

The more a society disconnects from agriculture, the more it becomes dependent on industrial food chains.

This is why some forward-thinking Nigerians are not only consuming food — they are owning productive farmland.

Not as subsistence farmers.

But as long-term asset owners.

For example, perennial crops such as cocoa and oil palm can produce for 30–70 years once established.

Meaning the land remains productive for decades.

Personally, I believe agriculture should return to national conversations about wellness — not just economics.

Healthy societies often maintain a strong connection to the land.

What do you think?

Is farmland ownership underrated when we talk about health and food security in Nigeria?

Let’s discuss. Please let's have your opinion in the comment section below and also check further details in my signature below👇
