Nigeria’s export of urea fertilizer surged to ₦1.3 trillion in the first quarter of 2026, which is a 64% increase over the ₦797.7 billion exported in Q1-2025. The reason for the upsurge is the US-Iran war which essentially shut the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route via which about 35% of global urea supplies passes. The closure caused a shutdown of fertilizer factories in the Gulf region, a sharp drop in supplies, and a spike in fertilizer prices, which motivated international buyers to seek alternative suppliers. Nigerian manufacturers have capitalized on the situation and scaled up shipments to destinations such as Brazil, Ethiopia, India, Mexico, Ukraine and the USA. Nigeria’s major fertilizer plants include: * Dangote Fertilizer (Lekki, Lagos): Africa’s largest producer of granulated urea fertilizer. Annual production 3 million metric tonnes (MMT) and currently expanding to reach 12MMT by 2028. * Indorama Eleme Fertilizer & Chemicals (Port-Harcourt, Rivers State): 2.8 MMT per annum. * Notore Chemical Industries (Onne, Rivers State): 0.5 MMT per annum. As at 2025, Nigeria was already the 9th highest exporter of Urea fertilizer in the world. If current trends continue, the country might soon break into the top 5.
