The Ogun State Government, in collaboration with the National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF), has distributed 8,000 bags of fertiliser to small holder farmers across the state to boost food production and strengthen food security. The Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr Bolu Owotomo, disclosed this during the fertiliser distribution programme held at the Agro Services Corporation, Asero, Abeokuta. Represented by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture, Mr Adeleke Otegbeye, the commissioner described the intervention as timely, noting that it aligns with Governor Dapo Abiodun's commitment to supporting farmers and enhancing agricultural productivity. Mr Owotomo said access to quality farm inputs would increase crop yields, improve farmers' incomes and promote sustainable agricultural growth across the state assuring beneficiaries of a transparent and equitable distribution process, adding that measures had been put in place to ensure the fertilisers reach the intended farmers. The commissioner urged beneficiaries to make effective use of the fertilisers to improve farm output and contribute to food sufficiency in the state. He disclosed that Ogun State has received 15,160 bags of fertiliser under the programme and is expecting an additional 5,000 bags, bringing the total allocation to 20,160 bags. According to him, the intervention will help reduce production costs for farmers and ease the burden of rising prices of agricultural inputs. Mr Owotomo added that lower production costs could contribute to stabilising food prices and improving access to affordable food for residents. Also speaking, NADF Monitoring and Evaluation Representative, Mr Oluwatosin Vaughan, said the exercise forms part of President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at improving food security nationwide. Mr Vaughan stated that the 8,000 bags of fertiliser would be distributed across the twenty local government areas of Ogun State to support crop production and increase agricultural productivity. He encouraged farmers to remain committed despite prevailing challenges and commended their contributions to national food security. In a remark, the Chairman of Ajegunle Farm Settlers Council, Mr Rotimi Sogunle, commended the Federal and Ogun State Governments for the intervention. Mr Sogunle said the fertilisers would reduce production costs, improve farmers' profitability and contribute to lower food prices. He expressed optimism that the programme would yield positive results, just as a similar intervention did in previous years. The beneficiary appreciated the support provided to farmers and described the initiative as a significant step towards strengthening food production and agricultural development in the state.
