Nigeria Tops List Of The World’s Top Five Cassava-producing Countries In 2026 by Dailywatch(op): 11:21am On Jul 26
Cassava remains one of the world’s most important agricultural commodities in 2026, serving as a staple food for hundreds of millions of people while driving industrial production across several sectors. From food processing and livestock feed to pharmaceuticals, textiles, paper manufacturing and biofuel production, the crop continues to play a critical role in both food security and economic development worldwide.

Its resilience has made cassava especially valuable in tropical and subtropical regions. Unlike many staple crops, cassava can thrive in poor soils, tolerate prolonged dry conditions and produce reliable harvests even under challenging climatic conditions. These characteristics have positioned it as a strategic crop for countries seeking sustainable agricultural systems and improved food resilience.

Global demand for cassava has continued to rise as governments and industries increasingly recognize its versatility. Beyond traditional consumption, the crop has become an essential raw material for manufacturing high-quality cassava flour, industrial starch, ethanol, sweeteners, adhesives and various processed food products. As investment in agro-processing expands, cassava is emerging as one of the world’s most commercially significant root crops.

Africa remains the undisputed leader in cassava production, accounting for a substantial share of global output. Several African nations dominate worldwide production due to favorable growing conditions, widespread cultivation and the crop’s importance in local diets. Meanwhile, countries in Asia and South America continue to strengthen their positions through large-scale commercial farming, advanced processing technologies and export-driven industries.

According to World Population Review, these are the top five cassava-producing countries in the world in 2026.

1. Nigeria
Nigeria has once again retained its position as the world’s largest cassava-producing country in 2026, producing more than 60 million metric tonnes annually. The country’s dominance is supported by vast arable land, a favorable tropical climate and millions of smallholder farmers who cultivate cassava across virtually every region.

Cassava occupies a central place in Nigeria’s agricultural economy and remains one of the nation’s most widely consumed staple foods. It is processed into numerous traditional products including garri, fufu, lafun, cassava flour, starch and tapioca, making it an indispensable part of daily meals in both rural and urban communities.

Beyond household consumption, cassava has evolved into a major industrial commodity. Nigerian processing companies increasingly convert the crop into high-quality cassava flour, industrial starch, glucose syrup, ethanol and livestock feed. These products are finding wider applications in food manufacturing, brewing, pharmaceuticals and other industrial sectors.

Government policies promoting local production and reducing dependence on imported raw materials have further strengthened the cassava value chain. Initiatives encouraging commercial farming, improved seedlings and value-added processing continue to attract investment into the sector.

Despite maintaining its global leadership, Nigeria still faces several challenges that limit productivity. Poor rural infrastructure, inadequate storage facilities, post-harvest losses, limited mechanization and restricted access to agricultural financing continue to affect many producers.
