The Special Need for the South East Smart Agriculture & Food Security Corridor (SAFSECor)
For decades, development in Nigeria has often been driven by politics rather than regional economic realities. Whether by design or as an unintended consequence of our political structure, many solutions have failed to reflect the unique needs and comparative advantages of each region. The result is a disconnect between policy and practical development.

One of the clearest examples is agriculture.

Today, a significant proportion of climate-sensitive fruits and vegetables consumed in the South East are cultivated hundreds of kilometres away in Northern Nigeria before being transported by road to markets across the region. This long supply chain creates multiple challenges:

• High post-harvest losses due to spoilage.
• Increased transportation costs that raise food prices.
• Reduced nutritional quality by the time produce reaches consumers.
• Greater dependence on distant supply chains vulnerable to insecurity, fuel costs, flooding, and poor road infrastructure.

The irony is striking. From a logistics perspective, in some cases it can be faster and more efficient to import certain fresh produce from East Africa through seaports or airports than to move the same produce overland from Northern Nigeria to Enugu. Whether or not this is true in every instance, it highlights an important point: our current agricultural value chain is neither efficient nor resilient.

The South East has long been recognised for its entrepreneurial spirit, innovation, and commercial excellence. Yet the region continues to rely heavily on food produced elsewhere, despite possessing fertile land, a large consumer market, abundant human capital, and a growing technology ecosystem.

This is precisely why the South East Smart Agriculture & Food Security Corridor (SAFSECor) is necessary.

SAFSECor is more than an agricultural project. It is a regional economic transformation initiative that integrates modern farming, technology, artificial intelligence, precision agriculture, renewable energy, smart irrigation, protected cultivation, cold-chain logistics, and digital market systems into a single ecosystem.

Inspired by global best practices—including lessons from Israel’s highly efficient agricultural systems—the initiative seeks to maximise productivity using innovation rather than simply expanding farmland.

The vision is ambitious but achievable:

• Build year-round climate-resilient food production across the South East.
• Reduce dependence on long-distance food transportation.
• Establish integrated cold-chain and processing infrastructure.
• Improve food quality while reducing waste.
• Create thousands of jobs in agriculture, technology, logistics, engineering, and security.
• Empower young people through agritech and AI-driven farming solutions.
• Strengthen regional food security against climate change and supply chain disruptions.
• Position the South East as a major producer—not just a consumer—of high-value agricultural products.

Food security is no longer just an agricultural issue; it is an economic, technological, and national security priority.

The regions that will prosper in the coming decades are those that can feed themselves, create value from their agricultural resources, leverage technology, and build resilient local supply chains.

The South East has every ingredient required to become a model for smart agriculture in Africa.

The time has come to stop viewing agriculture as subsistence farming and start treating it as strategic infrastructure.

SAFSECor represents that future.

A secure region is one who can source at least 90% of its food need’s locally. And that is what we are promoting for the South East!

You are only as powerful as much as you can grow your own food
