When many fish gather at the surface and appear to gulp air—especially early in the morning—the pond may have too little dissolved oxygen. This can follow overstocking, excess feed, decaying organic matter, an algal crash, poor water circulation or sudden weather changes.
Check whether the behavior affects most of the fish or only a few. Note the time of day, recent feeding, rainfall, water colour, smell and whether the aeration system is working. If aeration is available, increase it and stop adding feed temporarily while the situation is assessed. Avoid pouring chemicals into the pond based on guesswork; a wrong treatment can worsen water quality and stress the fish further.
Good pond records help identify patterns before losses occur. Stocking density, feeding quantity, mortality, water changes and unusual behavior should be written down consistently.
