Giving animals antibiotics based on guesswork may appear convenient, but it can create a larger problem. The wrong drug, wrong dose or incomplete course may fail to treat the illness and can encourage bacteria to become resistant. Resistant bacteria can spread among animals, people and the environment. Farmers should not use antibiotics simply because an animal has diarrhea, coughs or grows slowly. Those signs have different possible causes. A veterinary professional should decide whether an antibiotic is needed, which one is appropriate, and the correct dose and duration. Keep treatment records and follow the stated withdrawal period before milk, meat or eggs enter the food chain. Do not share leftover medicine between animals or stop treatment simply because the animal looks better, unless the prescriber tells you to. Prevention through hygiene, vaccination, nutrition and biosecurity also reduces the need for antibiotics. What makes antibiotic misuse common among livestock owners in your community—cost, access or lack of information? Speak to a veterinary doctor: 08111112131 or 09133659191 · Weekdays, 9:00 AM–4:00 PM.
