How Much Does A Greenhouse Cost In Nigeria? by AgroInfra(op): 4:53pm On Aug 31
A practical guide to greenhouse construction, installation, irrigation, site preparation and commercial greenhouse farm development

If you are planning to build a greenhouse in Nigeria, the first thing to understand is that there is no single greenhouse price.

A small greenhouse structure, a commercially equipped greenhouse and a complete greenhouse farming project are three different investments.

Current Nigerian market listings illustrate the range. For example, a 180–360 m² polytunnel listing is currently priced at approximately ₦5.5 million–₦7 million, while another Nigerian supplier lists fully installed 192–384 m² greenhouse packages at approximately ₦7 million–₦10 million. Other suppliers quote basic structures from around ₦2 million–₦5 million and automated systems at ₦10 million–₦50 million or more. These are market asking prices, not standardized industry rates.

The actual cost of your project depends on the structure, size, materials, irrigation, site conditions, crop, level of environmental control and other infrastructure required.

What Determines the Cost of a Greenhouse?

The price is primarily influenced by:

Greenhouse size
Structural design
Frame material and specification
Covering material
Insect netting
Ventilation
Irrigation
Fertigation
Environmental controls
Site preparation
Water source
Power supply
Location and logistics
Automation
Crop and production requirements

A greenhouse is therefore better understood as a production infrastructure system, rather than simply a covered structure.

Example Greenhouse Prices in Nigeria

Current market examples provide useful reference points.

One Nigerian supplier currently lists:

8 m × 24 m = 192 m²: approximately ₦7 million
10 m × 30 m = 300 m²: approximately ₦8.5 million
8 m × 48 m = 384 m²: approximately ₦10 million

Those packages include the greenhouse structure, covering film, drip irrigation, installation and agronomic support.

Another Nigerian supplier currently lists greenhouse structures of 180 m², 240 m² and 360 m² at approximately ₦5.499 million–₦7 million, depending on size.

These examples demonstrate an important point:

Two greenhouses with similar floor areas can have very different prices because their specifications are different.

Cost Per Square Metre

Some Nigerian construction-market data provides indicative greenhouse rates of approximately ₦8,000–₦15,000 per m² for certain galvanized-steel/polyethylene greenhouse configurations, including installation, although the source itself warns that actual prices depend on size, quality, difficulty and location.

However, cost per square metre should not be used alone to budget a commercial greenhouse.

A commercial greenhouse project can include infrastructure outside the greenhouse footprint.

For example:

Greenhouse

Water source

Water storage

Irrigation

Fertigation

Power

Site preparation

Drainage

Access

Nursery

Packhouse

Cold storage

can create a much larger investment than the greenhouse structure itself.

Greenhouse Structure vs Complete Greenhouse Project

This distinction is critical.

Option 1 — Greenhouse Structure

You purchase:

Frame
Cover
Doors
Insect netting
Ventilation components
Option 2 — Installed Greenhouse

You may additionally receive:

Installation
Drip irrigation
Basic fittings
Site installation
Option 3 — Commercial Greenhouse System

May include:

Greenhouse
Irrigation
Fertigation
Water storage
Pumps
Filtration
Climate control
Sensors
Automation
Power
Drainage
Option 4 — Complete Greenhouse Farm

May additionally include:

Borehole
Reservoir
Solar power
Nursery
Packhouse
Cold room
Warehouse
Farm roads
Fencing
Farm buildings
Staff facilities

This is why asking "How much is a greenhouse?" without defining the project can produce a misleading answer.

How Much Does a 300 m² Greenhouse Cost?

A current Nigerian market example places a 300 m² greenhouse at approximately ₦8.5 million for a specified dome greenhouse package including drip irrigation and installation.

But that does not automatically mean ₦8.5 million is the total cost of establishing a functioning commercial greenhouse farm.

You may still need to budget for:

Land
Site preparation
Water source
Borehole
Water storage
Pump
Filtration
Fertigation
Electricity
Solar
Drainage
Fencing
Farm access
Nursery
Crop inputs
Labour
Packhouse
Cold storage
How Much Does a 1,000 m² Greenhouse Cost?

A 1,000 m² greenhouse should not simply be calculated by multiplying the price of a small greenhouse by 1,000.

Large structures can achieve economies of scale because infrastructure such as end walls, access areas and certain systems can be shared.

However, the project may require more sophisticated:

Structural engineering
Ventilation
Irrigation
Fertigation
Water treatment
Environmental control
Electrical systems
Automation

Therefore, a proper project quotation should be based on the actual design rather than a simple per-square-metre multiplication.

How Much Does a 1-Hectare Greenhouse Cost?

One hectare equals:

10,000 m²

A hectare-scale commercial greenhouse is a substantially different project from a small greenhouse.

For example, one current international project source gives an indicative planning range of US$280,000–US$560,000 per hectare for screened naturally ventilated multi-span greenhouse systems in Nigeria with drip fertigation and solar pumping, before land; it explicitly describes this as a planning range and notes that import duties and logistics affect the final cost.

This illustrates why a hectare-scale project should be approached as an engineered commercial development, not as a retail greenhouse purchase.

What Is Included in Greenhouse Construction?

A properly specified greenhouse may contain:

Structural system
Galvanized steel frame
Columns
Trusses/arches
Bracing
Foundations
Doors
Covering
UV-stabilized polyethylene
Anti-drip/anti-fog film
Polycarbonate
Glass for specialized applications
Ventilation
Roll-up sides
Roof vents
Insect screens
Fans where required
Irrigation
Drip lines
Main lines
Sub-main lines
Filters
Valves
Pumps
Fertigation
Fertilizer tanks
Injectors
Dosers
Mixing systems

The specification should be determined by the crop, climate, production system and required level of control.

Does Greenhouse Cost Include Irrigation?

Sometimes.

Some Nigerian greenhouse packages currently advertised include drip irrigation.

Others are primarily structural packages.

Always ask:

What exactly is included in the quoted price?

A greenhouse quotation should identify whether it includes:

Structure
Cover
Insect netting
Irrigation
Fertigation
Water tank
Pump
Installation
Transportation
Site preparation
Electrical work
Automation
Crop-support systems

Without this information, comparing two greenhouse quotations can be misleading.

Water Infrastructure Can Change the Project Cost

Greenhouse production requires a reliable water supply.

Potential infrastructure includes:

Borehole
Surface-water intake
Reservoir
Storage tanks
Pumps
Filtration
Water treatment
Distribution network

The water system should be designed before the greenhouse is constructed, rather than treated as an afterthought.

For larger commercial projects, water quality also matters because unsuitable water can affect irrigation equipment and crop production.

How Much Does Greenhouse Irrigation Cost?

There is no single price.

Irrigation cost depends on:

Greenhouse area
Number of plants
Crop
Growing medium
Water source
Number of irrigation zones
Automation
Fertigation requirements
Pumping distance
Filtration
Water quality

A basic drip system is fundamentally different from an automated fertigation system with dosing and monitoring.

What About Solar Power?

Solar can be integrated into greenhouse projects to support:

Borehole pumping
Irrigation
Fertigation
Ventilation
Sensors
Lighting
Control systems

However, solar should not automatically be added to every greenhouse.

The correct approach is to first establish the energy load and then design the appropriate energy system.

Does Greenhouse Farming Require Climate Control?

Not necessarily.

Nigeria's climate allows many commercial greenhouse systems to operate using natural ventilation, depending on location, crop and greenhouse design.

More sophisticated facilities may use:

Fans
Cooling systems
Shade systems
Sensors
Environmental controllers
Automated ventilation
Evaporative cooling

A current Nigerian commercial greenhouse source recommends naturally ventilated structures for many Nigerian applications, while identifying additional cooling requirements for hotter northern dry-season conditions.

The most expensive greenhouse is not necessarily the most appropriate greenhouse.

The correct design depends on the crop, location, market, production target and business model.

Which Crops Are Suitable for Greenhouse Production in Nigeria?

Commercial greenhouse systems are commonly used for crops such as:

Tomato
Cucumber
Sweet pepper
Hot pepper
Lettuce
Herbs
Strawberry
Nursery seedlings

The economic case should be evaluated based on:

yield + selling price + production cycle + input costs + market access + infrastructure cost

rather than simply assuming that greenhouse cultivation is more profitable.

How Long Does a Greenhouse Last?

The lifespan depends on:

Structural material
Galvanization
Cover quality
UV exposure
Wind
Maintenance
Corrosion
Installation quality
Replacement of consumable components

The covering material may require replacement significantly earlier than the structural frame.

Therefore, the capital budget should include a maintenance and replacement plan.

Common Mistakes When Buying a Greenhouse
1. Comparing only headline prices

A ₦6 million greenhouse and a ₦10 million greenhouse may not be comparable systems.

2. Ignoring water

The greenhouse is useless without reliable water.

3. Ignoring drainage

Heavy rainfall can create operational problems if the site and greenhouse drainage are poorly designed.

4. Buying the structure before designing the farm

The greenhouse should fit the overall production system.

5. Over-automating

Automation should solve a real operational requirement.

6. Under-specifying the structure

Lower initial cost can result in higher maintenance and replacement costs.

7. Ignoring expansion

A greenhouse farm should ideally be designed with future expansion in mind.

At AIP, the greenhouse should be treated as one component of an integrated agricultural infrastructure project.

The process should be:

1. Define the commercial objective

What is the farm trying to produce and for whom?

2. Assess the site

Evaluate:

Location
Soil
Water
Topography
Access
Drainage
Power
Climate
3. Define the production system

Determine:

Crop
Production volume
Growing system
Production cycles
Required environmental control
4. Develop the infrastructure master plan

Plan:

Greenhouse + Water + Irrigation + Power + Roads + Drainage + Storage + Post-Harvest

5. Engineer the system

Prepare the appropriate:

Structural design
Irrigation design
Electrical design
Water system
Drainage
Supporting infrastructure
6. Develop the cost plan

Separate:

CAPEX + operating costs + maintenance + expansion

7. Procure and construct

Coordinate procurement, installation and construction.

8. Commission

Test the infrastructure before operational handover.

The Real Question Is Not "How Much Is a Greenhouse?"

If you are investing in commercial protected agriculture, the more useful question is:

"How much will it cost to develop the greenhouse production system required to achieve my production and commercial objectives?"

That changes the conversation from buying a structure to designing an agricultural asset.

For a commercial project, the greenhouse should therefore be designed as part of an integrated protected-agriculture infrastructure system.

AIP can support clients from site assessment and feasibility through greenhouse planning, engineering, infrastructure integration, procurement, construction and commissioning.
