Lameness reduces grazing, weight gain and breeding performance. It can also signal a painful foot condition that may spread within a flock. A sheep that walks slowly, kneels to graze, holds one foot up or separates from the group deserves prompt attention. Move the animal onto a clean, dry surface and inspect the legs and feet carefully without forcing it to walk long distances. Look for stones, swelling, heat, damaged horn, tenderness, bad smell or moisture between the claws. Keep obviously affected animals apart until the cause is understood, and improve muddy or dirty areas around water and feeding points. Do not assume every limp requires the same trimming, injection or footbath. Over-trimming can create injury, while the wrong medicine can waste money and delay recovery. A veterinary professional can help distinguish injury, foot rot and other causes and advise on treatment and flock control. How often do you deliberately observe your flock walking before feeding?
