In today’s story.

One thing I always do in life, is that I think of the future and plan things ahead. During the last year of my masters in Germany, I was not sure about my stay in Germany and if my residence permit would be extended. I thought to myself, what if I don’t get the job I like? What if I really cannot cope in this country? What if I don’t complete this study?

What I did was, I took advantage of my student status and applied for visas to other countries. As a student in Germany, you stand a great chance of getting visas to other countries, in the best convenience. They’ll also grant you visa, because they know Germany is a top country and if you already live in Germany, you won’t care about running to anywhere else.

I applied for visas to US, UK and Canada. I got my visas at first try, without hassle. I had a 2 years US visa, 6 months UK visa, and 2 years Canadian visa. All tourist visas. I got my US visa in two days, UK in two weeks and Canada in three weeks. I just wanted to have those visas on my passport incase Germany failed me. “At least I know I won’t have to return to Nigeria, if anything happens“.

I did not use the US and Canadian visas until one year later. I had to use the UK visa because it was valid for 6 months. I would advice other Nigerian students to take this smart opportunity. You never know what could happen.
When you’re no longer a student, it can be harder to get these visas because you’d have to provide other documents and proof.

Even though they are tourist visas and the fees are expensive, it is better to be safe than sorry. After all, it is going to be on your passport. Apply for these visas at least, 1 year before your residence permit expires.

This is a really good point fr. Quick question though, what is the essence of applying for a visit visa since you’ll neither be able to get a job nor work with it

Yeah, I read about that. I think it’s about €10k, Then you’d be eligible to a particular percentage per month. Is it a visible plan to get to Germany and get a student job, so I’ll have enough for my upkeep so when I get money from the blocked account monthly I can just be repaying it back to where I got it from directly or will I be compelled to spend all of that money In the blocked account?

If you can get a loan, go for it. Just make sure that you’re provided enough time to pay it back. You can definitely make enough money to pay it back, even while studying. Even if you cannot pay all of it until you get a full time job.

If you stay in student housing which is cheaper, use prepaid phone plan, and don’t get into unnecessary contracts, you can definitely save good money from your student job. There are Nigerian students who became millionaires (in naira), within their first year of study.
This is what I mean by going to a top country vs going to a low budget country. In a top country like Germany, you can make and save money.

Yes, companies are supposed to give priority to German and EU citizens but that’s not always the case. You can get a job if you’re qualified for it, as a non-EU citizen. You stand a better chance if you speak German.

There are graduates making big salaries in Germany. I know a Nigerian guy who studied in UK and works for PayPal in Berlin. His salary is €4,500 a month. His monthly expenses are about €1000 and he can save €3,500.
There are people who make more than that. Some of them are as young as 23 and 25 years old. My close friend is 26 and he makes €8,000 a month, after tax. He’s an entertainment lawyer. He does not know what to do with money. He always says he does not want to live long. He has a list of places he wants to visit, then he plans to donate his money to charity and die.

About moving back to Nigeria to live a good life, it depends on what “good life” means to you. If you have a loan to pay back, don’t expect to have enough money left for that “good life”.

Not all fathers will welcome their child coming to discuss stuff with them, especially when they just returned from work and that is the point of this thread. Some won't even bother with anything that has to do with their kids, especially once they believe their money is enough. As if money can buy that kind of love.

Naturally, I'm closer to my mom but I can tell you that my dad was present in my life all through. He helped take care of us by washing our clothes and making meals when we were much younger. He taught us to develop the reading culture by filling our bookshelves with novels from the school where he worked. That I loved reading today is cause of that action. He helped us in our assignments and quickened our learning process. Lol. I remember telling him once that I prefer mom teaching me maths to him cause he's a disciplinarian. You dare not know 2 + 2. Even my younger sister concurs. That's how committed he was in our upbringing.

Significantly, while growing up, I can go tell my dad anything at any time and he'll listen despite being a principal and a very strict personality. I once had a painful ear problem and I remember vividly going to tell him about it late at night after my mom directed me to. I was crying with tears clouding my eyelids but I remember how red his eyes was from the deep sleep I had roused him from and how he left the bed, got his glasses and a torch and took time to inspect my ear before promising I would go to the doctor to get better. I was 10 then.

Fast forward to now, if I show up in his room to ask him something, he always has this rapt attention on him always, ready to listen and give sound advice. He's always ready to listen and that's what made his strictness mesh with his kindness.

That I remember my dad today isn't because of his financial contribution (my mom worked the same hours he did), but of the sacrifices he made especially.

Not all moms too are willing to talk especially when they’re not in the mood. Just try and improve the relationship anyway you can. I feel we’re on the same page

This thing goes both ways in my own opinion. We have men that lost their wives and they raised their kids perfectly alone, however I feel like your father would have relevant to you if
1. He’s a responsible man
2. You’re sensible and understanding

Also, I hear education is Germany is free and I’m looking to do masters in Geomatics Engineering, I saw that the salary is pretty impressive, however my friend told me they give priority to Europeans for jobs before considering other nationals, how true is that?

Lastly, will I be able make enough money while studying to probably move to move back to Nigeria and start a good life
