The Federal Executive Council on Wednesday approved award of contract for the consultancy services for the feasibility study and conceptual design of Lots 4,5 and 6 of the Abuja Rail Mass Transit network. Supervising Minister of Information, Dr. Nurudeen Muhammed; and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Senator Bala Muhammed, disclosed this to State House correspondents at the end of the council’s meeting presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan. Muhammed said during the meeting which lasted less than an hour, the council approved N272.7m for the contract that has a completion period of one year. He said the funding would be sourced from a provision of N280million in the 2014 FCT Statutory Appropriation for the project. He said, “The Minister of the FCT brought a memo to council seeking approval for the award of contract for the feasibility study and conceptual design of Lots 4, 5, and 6 of the Abuja Rail Mass Transit network for the Federal Capital Territory. “The FCT Rail Mass Transit system is designed primarily as mover of people within and between the satellite towns and the different phases of the city. “Also, the Abuja rail system will be integrated with the planned national rail network. “There is a provision of N280,000,000.00 in the 2014 FCT Statutory Appropriation for the project. “The projects upon completion will reduce traffic congestion, shorten journeys distances and reduce pressure on existing public transport services. “The project will also provide employment opportunities to about 5,000 skilled and unskilled workers while about 4,500 skilled workers will be engaged in the direct operation of the system on completion.” The FCT Minister explained that Lot 4 of the rail system is from Kuje to Karshi; Lot 5 from Kubwa to Bwari; and Lot 6 from Airport to Gwagwalada. He explained that Lot 2 of the rail system which will convey passengers from Nyanya to city centre up to Kubwa was the most viable with the government already getting interests from private sector to do it. A prominent Tiv elder and frontline political grassroot mobilizer, Chief Iorapuu Amile, has said that the Tiv people will vote for President Goodluck Jonathan in the next general elections only if he considers them worthy of a senior minister slot in his cabinet. He stated this in a chat with The Punch in Gboko local government area, the traditional home of the Tivs. He said, “The President (Jonathan) is our brother by extension since he is also a minority and the only condition that will make us vote for him in the next general election is for him to promise us a slot for a senior ministerial appointment. “This I believe is not too much for him considering the numerical strength of the Tiv people as adjudged to be the fourth largest ethnic group in the country.” Amile who was the chairman of the defunct National Republican Convention, Gboko local government chapter, maintained that it was not right for the Tiv people not to have had a senior minister throughout Jonathan’s first tenure. He said, “Let the President himself see to it that there has been a high level of political and economic injustices meted on our people throughout his first tenure and we are simply saying there must be a change for us to be with him.” The former NRC chairman added that marginalisation of his people has reached an “unbearable and unacceptable stage.” Source: http//:www.punchng.com/news/we-will-vote-jonathan-if-tiv-elder/ |
