The bodies of 66 South African victims of the Synagogue collapsed building were on Saturday handed over to a South African official, to be taken home. The remains were collected from the Mainland Hospital, Yaba and the Isolo General Hospital, Isolo. The bodies were seen being loaded into three refrigerated trucks. Prof. Oladapo Obafunwa, the Chief Medical Examiner in charge, said that 80 bodies, including victims from Nigeria, Togo and other neighbouring countries, were identified. Obafunwa, who is the professor of forensic pathology, Lagos State University's College of Medicine, Ikeja, said that 66 of the victims were identified to be South Africans. We have been working from midnight when the South African officials arrived, to identify the bodies. "So far, from Yaba mortuary, we identified 40 South Africans and the bodies have been appropriately labelled and loaded into the refrigerated trucks. "My colleague led the other team of the South African officials to the Isolo mortuary, where they identified and loaded 26 bodies,’’ he said. Efforts to speak with the South African officials proved abortive as none of them was willing to speak. - NAN |
TRADE Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, weekend, faulted the introduction of new N100 bank notes by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to commemorate Nigeria’s centenary celebration, saying it was ill-timed and wasteful. In a statement by its President and Secretary General, Mr. Bobboi Kaigama and Musa Lawal respectively, TUC said “printing of new currency is usually a capital-intensive venture, and raises questions as to how the CBN hopes to grapple with the economic implications of redesigning and printing the new bank notes. “Even the timing of the project is inappropriate, coming so late in the year when the economic hustle and bustle associated with Christmas and New Year are nigh. “These, together with the heightened state of insecurity in parts of the country, the frenzy of political activities and electioneering campaigns towards the forthcoming 2015 elections, and the current slump in global oil prices make this the worst possible time for such drastic fiscal policy.” Vanguard |

Political thugs weekend unleashed terror on residents of Ajegunle, a suburb of Lagos, destroying properties worth millions of naira during a political campaign. The thugs, numbering over 300, allegedly invaded Ajegunle and its environs during a political declaration campaign by a politician (names withheld) and a member Lagos State House of Assembly, who is angling to contest for the fifth term. According to reports, the politician, who was accompanied by the thugs during the declaration, gave out bundles of N1000 notes in appreciation of their undiluted support towards his political ambition around Alao bus stop in Ojo road. Trouble, it was learned, started when the sharing formula did not go well with some of the thugs as those from Campus in Adejiyan and Alaba streets took advantage of the situation to unleash terror on residents, using guns and axes to frighten residents. They also looted shops and damaged parked vehicles. Also seen were damaged vehicles, properties and shrapnels of broken bottles and shattered car windscreens which littered major streets as Jinadu, Apasa Safejo and Alao streets, while most shops remained shut. When contacted, the Layeni Divisional Police Officer, CSP Chijoke Ndu, was unavailable but reporter reliably gathered that the division arrested and charged to court over eight thugs allegedly caught with pistols. THE Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has granted a two-day extension of the Continuous Voter Registration, CVR, in six states of the Federation. Temporary Voter’s Card The gesture, which the commission said, excluded Adamawa State, covered only states under the third phase of the exercise. The affected states, according to INEC, are Kano, Edo, Plateau, Ogun, Imo and Lagos states. A short statement by Mr Kayode Idowu, the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, explained that the CVR which commenced on Wednesday, November 12, and was scheduled to end on Monday, November 17, 2014, will now last until Wednesday, November 19, 2014. “The Chairman of INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega, approved the extension to make up for initial challenges in the exercise and to enable as many eligible persons as possible to get registered. “The Commission strongly admonishes against persons using the CVR to engage in multiple registration, which is a criminal offence and culprits liable to prosecution,” the statement said. Take advantage of extension, Lagos INEC urges residents Urging affected Lagos residents to take advantage of the extension and get listed, the Lagos INEC Public Affairs Officer, Mr. Femi Akinbiyi, however, advised residents to shun double or multiple registrations. His words: All eligible voters whose names were not on our electronic voters’ register (EVR) should take advantage of this extension to register. Multiple registration should be avoided as this will deprive you of your right to vote in future elections. Vanguard. |
