Gross profit, therefore, jumped by 239.72% to N7.688bn from N2.263bn. Currency-In-Circulation Drops By N176.5bn YTD In March- CBN Currency-in-Circulation across the nation continued its rise and fall, dropping N88.093bn or 3.93% month-on-month in March 2019, according to data available on the website of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Tuesday evening. According to the CBN, currency outside of bank vaults across the country stood at N2.153tr at the end of March, declining from the N2.241tr recorded at the end of February. On a Year-to-Date basis, currency in circulation dropped by N176.486bn or 7.58% from N2.329tr reported at the end of December 2018. The high volume of cash within the system has been blamed on election spending within the period, given that the nation’s general election finally began on February 23, after a week’s delay with the Presidential and National Assembly polls. This was followed on March 6, 2019, by the Governorship and House of Assembly elections. Recall that there were several rerun elections at weekends and even some weekdays during the month under review in the cases of inconclusive elections in some states and National Assembly seats. Year-on-Year, the value of cash outside of Nigeria’s banking system rose by N113.896bn or 5.58% from N2.039tr recorded in March 2018. In February, Nigeria’s currency-in-circulation increased year-on-year by a whopping N303.976bn or 15.69% at N2.241tr in February 2019, from N1.937tr in February 2018. Besides the political undertone to the rise in cash outside the banks, the CBN has seemingly de-emphasized and/or lost the political will to pursue its cashless policy initiative which initially resulted in noticeable drops in heavy cash transactions. CBN Pumps Another $210m Into Inter-Bank Forex Market In continuation of its mediation in the inter-bank foreign exchange market, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Wednesday, April 24, 2019, intervened with the sum of $210m to sustain liquidity in that segment of the market. According to the figures released by the apex bank, authorized dealers in the wholesale segment of the market were offered $100m, while those in the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) segment got $55m. Customers purchasing foreign exchange for invisibles such as tuition fees, medical payments and Basic Travel Allowance (BTA), among others, were also allotted a total of $55m. Confirming the transactions, CBN’s Head of Corporate Communications, Isaac Okorafor reiterated its readiness to ensure the availability of foreign exchange in order to ensure continued stability in the markets. In its last intervention on Thursday, April 18, 2019, the CBN injected the sum of $254.8m and CNY34.8m into the Retail Secondary Market Intervention Sales (SMIS) segment. Meanwhile, the Naira on Wednesday, April 24, 2019, exchanged at an average of N360/$1 in the BDC segment of the market. https://investdata.com.ng/2019/04/cbn-pumps-another-210m-into-inter-bank-forex-market/#more

Analysis: Historical Price Movement Of Dangote Flour Mills (October 2012-April 23, 2019) The share price of Dangote Flour Mills soared by almost maximum 10% on Tuesday, April 23, 2019, following an announcement that its owners had reached a binding agreement to transfer it whole and entire (but without encumbrances) to Olam International, a commodity trading company of Singaporean origin (READ MORE). Investdata Consulting Ltd, in the chart above, shows the price movement of DFM since October 14, 2012, when its owners- Dangote Industries Limited, the holding company of Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man yet, sold 65% of its holdings to Tiger Brand at N9.50, retaining 10%. It however repurchased (call it ‘re-acquired’) the company on February 24, 2016, at a paltry N1.24 after almost four years of posting losses, thereby making a kill, like every smart investor. The company returned to profit again immediately Dangote Group took it over. The directors rewarded shareholders with 20 kobo dividend per share after five years of waiting and hoping that things could, at least turnaround and their expectations met. DFM is back to loss again, as shown in the 2018 full-year earnings score-card released earlier this month and it is being offered to Olam, a group known to be heavy investors in Nigeria’s agricultural value chain, at N26.00 per units, translating to N14.25 or 121.28% premium. The final price will, however, be subject to certain adjustments in line with the agreement. Meanwhile, we watch to see where the announcement will take the share price before the cut-off date of the binding offer, just as investors would be interested in what adjustments will likely be made that will affect the share price and therefore, minority shareholders, in view of the no-excess baggage part of the clause. The Five Biggest Stock Market Myths Many investors wonder whether they should invest in stocks. Before deciding to invest, it's important to have an accurate understanding of stocks and trading rather than blindly accepting common myths. Here are five of those myths and the truth behind them. 1. Investing in Stocks Equates to Gambling This reasoning causes many people to shy away from the stock market. To understand why investing in stocks is inherently different from gambling, we need to review what it means to buy stocks. A share of common stock represents ownership in a company. It entitles the holder to a claim on assets as well as a fraction of the profits that the company generates. Too often, investors think of shares as simply a trading vehicle, and they forget that stock represents ownership. In the stock market, investors are constantly trying to assess the profit that will be left over for shareholders. This is why stock prices fluctuate. The outlook for business conditions is always changing, and so are the future earnings of a company. Assessing the value of a company is complex. There are so many variables involved that short-term price movements appear to be random (academics call this the random walk theory); however, over the long term, a company is supposed to be worth the present value of the profits it will make. In the short term, a company can survive without profits because of the expectations of future earnings, but no company can fool investors forever—eventually, a company's stock price will show the true value of the firm. Gambling, in contrast, is a zero-sum game. Gambling merely takes money from a loser and gives it to a winner. No value is ever created whereas the overall wealth of an economy increases through investing. As companies compete, they increase productivity and develop products that improve lives. Investing and creating wealth should not be confused with gambling's zero-sum game. 2. The Stock Market Is an Exclusive Club For Brokers and Rich People Many market advisors claim to be able to call the markets' every turn. However, almost every study done on this topic has proven that these claims are false. Most market prognosticators are notoriously inaccurate; furthermore, the internet has made the market much more accessible to the public than ever before. The data and research tools previously available only to brokerages are now available for individuals to use. Moreover, discount brokerages and robo-advisors allow investors to access the market with minimal investment. 3. Fallen Angels Will Go Back Up, Eventually Whatever the reason for this myth's appeal, nothing is more destructive to amateur investors than thinking that a stock trading near a 52-week low is a good buy. Think of this in terms of the Wall Street adage, "Those who try to catch a falling knife only get hurt." Suppose you are looking at two stocks: X reached an all-time high last year around $50 but has since fallen to $10 per share. Y is a smaller company but has recently gone from $5 to $10 per share. Which stock would you buy? Believe it or not, all things being equal, the majority of investors choose the stock that has fallen from $50 because they believe it will eventually make it back up to those levels again. Thinking this way is a cardinal sin in investing. Price is only one part of the investing equation (investing is different from trading because the latter uses technical analysis). The goal is to buy growth companies at a reasonable price. Buying companies solely because their market price has fallen will yield nothing. Investing in stocks should not be confused with value investing, which is buying high-quality companies that are undervalued by the market. 4. Stocks That Go Up Must Come Down The laws of physics do not apply to the stock market, and there is no gravitational force to pull stocks back to even. Over 20 years ago, Berkshire Hathaway's stock price rose from $7,455 to $17,250 per share in a little more than a five-year period. Far from coming back down, the stock rose again to over $308,000 per share in February 2019. Although it is not true to state that stocks never undergo a correction, the point is that the stock price is a reflection of the company. If you find a great firm run by excellent managers, there is no reason the stock will not continue to rise. 5. A Little Knowledge Is Better Than None Knowing something is generally better than nothing, but it is crucial in the stock market that individual investors have a clear understanding of what they are doing with their money. Investors who do their homework are the ones that succeed. An investor who lacks the time to do extensive research should consider employing the services of an advisor. The cost of investing in something that is not fully understood far outweighs the cost of using an investment advisor. The Bottom Line "What's obvious is obviously wrong" is another adage. It implies that knowing just a little will only have you following the crowd like a lemming. Successful investing takes hard work and effort. Consider a partially informed investor as a partially informed surgeon; the mistakes could be severely hazardous to their financial health. investopedia https://investdataltd..com/2019/04/the-five-biggest-stock-market-myths.html

First point, for you to spend something, it means you've a value in possession, for which you wish to exchange for another value of more importance to you per time. II. Second Point, time is considered as the currency of the world, currency because flows, its how long it takes from the start to finish of an event. Finally, events will always occur, with or without your input, the only way to get anything between events, is to invest your talent, resources, valuables to mark the planting to harvest seasons, as an interval between events... Expect Volatility, Mixed Performance On Continued Profit Booking From Rally Market Update for the week ended April 18 and Outlook for April 23-26 The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) in the past week had a positive outing, halting five consecutive weeks of decline on the back of seemingly positive economic data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and inflow of mixed Q1 earnings reports to the market in the period under review. The reports from the financial services and consumer goods sectors so far are weak, just in line with Investdata’s expectations, but given the prolonged decline in equity prices, the scorecards could be catalysts if the ongoing buying interest is sustained next week as more Q1 numbers hit the market. Meanwhile, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is easing gradually, while inflation rate is lowering, as revealed through the Consumer Price Index (CPI), a measure of the average change in the general price level of all items, which declined Year-on-Year in the month of February, from 11.31% to 11.25%. This represents the third consecutive monthly decline in Nigeria’s Headline inflation rate, jointly impacted by the reduction in both core (all items less farm produce) and food (farm produce) price sub-indexes. These are the moments when real wealth can be created in stocks. I want to make sure you are acting, not watching from the sidelines. Also, as you enjoy your long Easter holidays, take a moment to sign up for Investdata buy and sell signal setup to get all our in-depth analysis of the picture and to get access to our carefully created watch list of stocks. To become a member, send ‘YES’ or ‘STOCKS’ to the phone numbers below. The number of stocks on our watchlist has increased due to the prolonged market correction. Take advantage of this service to buy right and sell right during this Q1 earnings season and beyond. Movement Of NSEASI The four trading days of last week ahead due to the Easter holiday recorded three sessions of positive performance driven by the earnings reports from the big banks: Guaranty Trust Bank, Zenith Bank, and Access Bank, as well as Africa Prudential, United Capital and Unilever Nigeria that came mixed and even weak. The recovery trend continued after Monday’s slowdown on strong momentum, trading above the 20-Day Moving Average, despite profit bookings in the last trading session of the week. The benchmark NSE All-Share index lost 0.22% on Monday, but turned positive on Tuesday and thereafter consolidated on Wednesday and Thursday, when it notched 0.46%, 0, 78% and 0.53% on the strength of bargain hunting for undervalued stocks. This brought the week’s total gain for the week to 1.78%, thereby reversing previous week’s 0.19% loss. In the period under review, kobo stocks dominated the advancers’ table as demand for blue-chip stocks were just kicking off ahead of the expected Q1 scorecards. The recovery was sustained due to low stock valuations, despite price adjustments for dividends declared. The renewed demand for stocks was evidenced in the sector indexes that closed positive, except the NSE Oil/Gas index that lost 2.22%, while the NSE Consumer index led the advancers’ side with 5.20%, followed by the NSE Insurance and Banking indices with 2.44% and 2.07% respectively. The energy behind the week’s performance was weak, but up marginal as revealed by money flow index at 35.55 basis points, compared to 31.40bps in the previous week, indicating that funds are gradually entering the market. Just as buying volume stood at 93% for the period under review. NSEASI Weekly Time Frame The NSE All-Share index during the week rallied on a low traded volume while at the same time forming a double bottom, signaling a high possibility of trend continuation, on improved positive sentiments, amidst the side trending Money Flow index. Also noteworthy is the fact that the benchmark NSEASI is trading above its 20-Day Moving Average, to breakout the psychological line of 30,000. Bullish Sectors Indices The sectoral performance index was largely bullish, except for the NSE Oil/Gas that closed lower, while market breadth was flat with advancers equaling decliners in the ratio of 33:33, thereby reversing previous week’s down market. Volume and value for the period declined by 44.14% and 25.10% respectively to 988.96m shares worth N11.43bn, compared to previous week’s 1.77bn units valued N15.26bn. The uptrend confirms the impact of bargain hunting and portfolio repositioning ahead of Q1 earnings season and economic data expectations. The statement that the stock market is the barometer for measuring economic wellbeing of any nation will be tested when the NBS publishes the Q1 GDP, given that the corporate earnings already released have given insights into the nation performed between January and March, despite expansion recorded in the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI). The best-performing stocks for the week were Chams and First Aluminum, which led the advancers’ table with 28.57% and 28.13% gains respectively, closing at N0.36 and N0.41 per share on market forces. On the other hand, ABC Transport and Royal Exchange Assurance that suffered losses of 17.50% and 12% respectively, closing at N0.33 and N0.22, as investors are watching. During the week also, the prices of Unilever Nigeria, Chams, Fidelity Bank and Fidson Healthcare were adjusted for a dividend of N2.45, five kobo, 25 kobo, and 35 kobo respectively proposed by their directors. Also, investors are already anticipating the bulk of 2019Q1 company earnings reports that will tell the full story of how the economy performed between January and March. Market Outlook We expect the mixed performance to continue this week due to profit booking from the rally witnessed last week. We must not gloss over the reality that there is currently no positive trigger to sustain the recent market resurgence. That notwithstanding, we would not overlook the possibility of a bargain-hunting motive supporting positive performance, especially with many fundamentally sound stocks remaining underpriced. With the prices of major blue chips continuing to drop in recent weeks, we expect speculative trading to shape the market’s direction this week, despite the seeming negative outlook. The sustained volatility will continue as investors and fund managers rebalance their portfolios, with eyes fixed on the political space and post-election market dynamics. Investors should review their positions in line with their investment goals, the strength of company numbers and act as events unfold in the global and domestic environment. However, we would like to reiterate our advice that investors should go for equities with intrinsic value and allow numbers guide their decisions while repositioning in any stock, especially now that stock prices remain low in the midst of mixed company numbers, weak economic and market fundamentals. We appreciate all the participants and facilitators that made our Port Harcourt Chart Summit a success. Believing all the strategies discussed will impact positively on their trading if implemented. 4 Key Factors To Building A Profitable Portfolio Portfolio management means different things to different people but, in general, it is a way of balancing risks and rewards. And while the goal of any investment strategy seems straightforward – make money – it often depends on an investor's circumstances. For example, a young person who is new to the full-time workforce might reasonably expect his investment portfolio to grow and provide him with a nest egg when he retires. Conversely, an older worker may simply want to hold on to what she has already accumulated. To satisfy the desires of both types of investors (along with the desires of others) individualized approaches are needed. Things to Consider When deciding on the right portfolio blend, keep these things in mind: 1. Goals – Exactly what is it that you are trying to accomplish? Is your objective to accumulate wealth or to hold on to what you already have? 2. Risk Tolerance – How do you handle the day-to-day fluctuations of the market and the consequent rise and fall of your net worth? If you are prone to wild reactions, like checking the sky for swarms of locusts every time your portfolio loses value, it might behoove you to find more stable investments. True, it might take you longer to reach some of the financial goals you've set, but at least you'll sleep at night … and the crops will be safe. 3. Own What You Know – Often it helps to invest in businesses and industries that you know something about. Acme Widgets may have had a great fourth quarter, but if you know nothing about the widget industry, how do you know that the company will continue to be successful? For that matter, how do you know that people will still be using widgets five to 10 years from now? Information about a specific business or industry doesn't necessarily provide the answers to these questions, but it sure doesn't hurt. 4. When to Buy/Sell – If the stock market has taught us anything recently, it is that Kenny Rogers was right: "You gotta know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em." Every purchase you make should have a purpose, and you should constantly re-evaluate that purpose according to the market and other conditions. The Bottom Line By thoroughly understanding and articulating your monetary goals and being an active participant in your financial planning, it's possible to grow your investment portfolio safely and steadily - without growing any (more) gray hairs in the process. NGSE Indicators Fail To Confirm Rebound, As Investors Play Safe, Expect Guidance From Q1 Data Market Update for April 15 Trading activities on the Nigerian Stock Exchange on Monday was yet volatile, closing lower, even as it cut short the seeming uptrend expected to confirm the real recovery after three sessions of upmarket. The profit booking which halted the trend was not surprising, given that the market is still looking to positive factors like the expected Q1 numbers, government policy, and liquidity to support the recent reversal. Monday’s trading opened higher in the morning but drifted lower and at one point swung from intraday high of 29,630.86 basis points, to a low of 29,484.93bps. It bounced around all afternoon, and in the last minute closed to the downside. However, despite profit taking that hit the market, breadth remained positive in the midst of mixed sentiments. As we discussed last week, the position of Q1 earnings likely to hit the market this week, as well as economic data, especially the March inflation figure released Tuesday morning, will determine the next line of action. Note that the market low liquidity continues to pervade the market, just as confidence level remains weak and needs to be stimulated. Little insight has already been given, with the impressive numbers from the Infinity Mortgage Bank. The market was looking for earnings contraction from weak economic activities, despite the expansion of PMI for the same period. Market technicals for the day were negative but mixed with volume traded lower than the previous day in the midst of positive breadth and strong selling sentiments. This was confirmed by Investdata’s daily sentiment report that shows a 77% sell volume and 23% buy of the total daily transaction volume index of 0.59. The momentum behind the day’s market performance was very weak but is looking up as shown by Money Flow Index of 22.24 points, from the previous day’s 19.60bps. This indicates a gradual inflow of funds to the market, despite the seeming increase in demand for stocks. Index and Market Cap At the end of Monday’s trading, the benchmark NSE All-Share Index shed 69.99bps, closing at 29,495.91bps, after opening at 29,565.90bps, representing a 0.22% decline. Market capitalization dropped by N25.92bn to N11.08tr, from its opening value of N11.10tr, also representing 0.22% value loss. Attention: Join Investdata buy and sell signal setup to get all our in-depth analysis of the picture and to get access to our carefully created watch list of stocks. To become a member, send ‘YES’ or ‘STOCKS’ to the phone numbers below. The number of stocks on our watchlist has increased due to the prolonged market correction. Take advantage of this service to buy right and sell right during this Q1 earnings season and beyond. The session downturn resulted from profit-taking in banking and other stocks like Dangote Cement, Nestle, FBNH Holding, UBA, Flour Mills, Oando and Honeywell. This impacted negatively on the Year-to-Date loss, increasing it marginally to 6.16%, just as market capitalization dropped further to N586.21bn, or 5.28%, from the opening level of N11.72tr. Mixed Sector Indices The sectoral performance indexes for the day were largely bullish, except for the NSE Banking and Oil/Gas that were in red, while others closed green, led by the NSE Consumer and industrial Goods indexes with 1.33% and 0.56% respectively. Market breadth was positive as advancers outweighed decliners in the ratio of 26:17. Market activities in volume and value were down by 3.86% and 9.51% respectively to 223.78m shares worth N1.79bn, as against previous day’s 232.77m units valued at N2.01bn.Volume was driven by financial services and ICT stocks like Sovereign Trust Insurance, Chams, UBN, Guaranty Trust Bank and UBA. Initiate Plc and Dangote Flour Mills were the best-performing stocks for the day, gaining 9.59% and 9.52% respectively while closing at N0.80 and N9.20 per share on market forces and sentiments. ABC Transport and AG Leventis lost 10% and 9.68% respectively, closing at N0.36 and N0.28 respectively, on profit taking and market forces. Market Outlook We expect a mixed performance depending on market forces ahead of Q1 numbers and as traders react to the inflation data for March released Tuesday morning, expected to give insights into how this year’s outlook after seeing the weak 2018 financials. Investors look to government’s policy direction as the market faces low liquidity problems in the ongoing earnings reporting season, vis-à-vis market and economic fundamentals. Given the drop in the prices of major blue chips in recent times, creating entry opportunities, we expect speculative trading to shape the market direction going forward. The volatility witnessed from last week until Tuesday was driven by traders and investors repositioning ahead of dividend declaration by major listed companies. The ongoing volatility will continue as investors and fund managers rebalance their portfolios, with eyes fixed on political space and ongoing full year company earnings position and post-election market dynamics. Investors should review their positions in line with their investment goals, the strength of the company numbers and act as events unfold in the global and domestic environment. However, we would like to reiterate our advice that investors should go for equities with intrinsic value, We advise investors to allow numbers to guide their decisions while repositioning in any stock, especially now that stock prices remain low in the midst of mixed company numbers, weak economic and market fundamentals. We appreciate all the participants and facilitators that made our Port Harcourt Chart Summit a success. Believing all the strategies discussed will impact positively on their trading if implemented. Financial Literacy: SEC Seeks More Collaboration Among Regulators Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) says it is ready to strengthen collaborations with other financial industry regulators in the country, as part of the financial literacy campaign. This, the commission said, during an advocacy visit by the Financial Literacy Technical Committee, a market-wide committee of the capital market to the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) in Abuja, at the weekend, is in a bid to ensure that Nigerians both in the urban and rural areas are effectively sensitized on the benefits of financial literacy, and in turn lead to an improvement in the economy. Speaking at the event, SEC’s Director of Market Development, Edward Okolo said the visit is in an effort to further strengthen collaboration between the committee and NAICOM and expressed appreciation to NAICOM for being a member of the committee in helping to pursue financial literacy awareness in the market. He described the insurance industry as one of the veritable tools of raising money in the market, stressing the need to explore avenues of enlightening the states on insurance during the SEC’s regular enlightenment campaigns. “As we market the capital market, NAICOM can also market insurance products during such campaigns. This collaboration will further strengthen our base and strengthen the financial side of the economy. Our sustenance is going to be based on how we can strengthen the market and introduce new products” he said. Also commenting, a member of the committee, Omagbitse Barrow, said the story of the financial sector needs to be told more holistically by all agencies involved. According to him, “we need to be in agreement as well as understand what we do to be able to forge a united front. Already, we are making use of various channels like social media, training students on Over the Counter and other financial products to enlighten Nigerians. “Our focal area is to get people to understand more about the things we are doing and explore areas where we can collaborate as fellow regulators. “We need to pay more attention to financial literacy and use it as a fulcrum to deepen the quality of participation and create more value for the industries. We want to continue to have more co-operation with a unified front to drive financial literacy. When that happens, the market will respond appropriately” Barrow added. Reacting, Director, Inspection at NAICOM, Barineka Thompson, commended the committee on its work which he said would deepen the financial industry and empower the citizens. Thompson said the work of the committee will lead to improvements in products in the insurance sector and further deepen the market, which will, in turn, improve the financial sector and the economy. “We are glad that you are collaborating with NAICOM. We will mobilize our representation from the industry and this will further enhance the scope of interaction. “As we plan ahead, we will find areas to work with the committee. We are interested in the work of the committee and can assure you of our support, we support the on-going implementation of the master plan and will continue to support it” he added. Investors Expect Sustained Volatility, Speculative Trading To Indicate NGSE Direction Market Update for the week ended April 12 and Outlook for April 15-1 Trading activities on the Nigerian Stock Exchange over the past week were mixed, closing lower and extending five consecutive weeks of bear-run. This was despite the seemingly improved buying interest for the period under review while awaiting Q1 scorecards and March inflation data. We talked about the coming catalysts for Q1 earnings season that are expected to kick off fully next week with two companies presenting their numbers to the investing community. As we discussed, the NSE and corporate Nigeria have set their minds for a contraction in company earnings in the first quarter, compared to the same period a year ago. This is good for the market because it has set the stage for positive surprises. Remember, the economy was weak in Q1, with the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) reflecting an expanding economy. As I mentioned during the week, this is a recipe for solid earnings growth, rather than a contraction. The first quarter earnings report of Infinity Mortgage Bank has given insight into what will likely come from the banks. The market expected earnings contractions, relative to Q1 of 2018. Will the current low liquidity in the market, despite the signal of recovery fuel the market’s rebound to support level. Movement Of NSEASI Meanwhile, Nigeria’s equity market opened the week on a negative note, losing 1.5% as high cap stocks like Dangote Cement, Guaranty Trust Bank, and Stanbic IBTC suffered losses. The trend continued on Tuesday but on a reduce momentum, before turning positive in the last three trading sessions on the back of bargain hunting, given that many stocks were undervalued. This led to daily gains of 0.20%, 0.50%, and 0.73% respectively for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, reducing the week’s total decline to 0.19%. Low cap stocks dominated the advancers’ table during the period as blue-chip stocks struggled to rebound after previous weeks of sell-offs and price adjustment for dividends declared. The renewed demand for low, medium and high stocks are expected to impact positively on the market. The only sector that closed higher was the NSE Oil/Gas index with 0.36%, while the NSE insurance index led the losers, shedding 3.08%. It was followed by the NSE Industrial goods’ 0.69%. The momentum behind the week’s performance was weak, but flat as revealed by money flow index at 31.40 basis points, compared to 31.35bps in the previous week, indicating that funds are exiting the market, just as buying pressure was high at 93% for the period under review. NSEASI Weekly Time Frame The composite NSE All-Share index, during the week, resisted further decline on a low traded volume, while at the same time forming a double bottom. This signaled a high possibility of reversal, on improved positive sentiments, amidst a side trendingMoney FlowIndex. Also noteworthy is the fact that the benchmark index is trading below its 20-Day Moving Average, after testing the recent support level of 28,780.02 basis points. Bearish Sectors Indices The sectoral performance index was largely bearish, except for the NSE Oil/Gas that closed green, while market breadth was positive with advancers outnumbering decliners in the ratio of 35:31 as in previous week’s down market. Volume and value for the period declined by 50% and 24.68% respectively to 1.77bn shares worth N15.26bn from previous week’s 3.54bn units valued N20.26bn. The decline in sell-off came amid bargain hunting and portfolio repositioning ahead of Q1 earnings season and economic data expectations. Learn Africa and May & Baker were the best-performing stocks for the period, topping the advancers’ table with 18.7% and 17.39% gains respectively, closing at N1.46 and N2.70 per share on market forces and impact of the dividend. On the other hand, Ikeja Hotel and ABC Transport that suffered the biggest losses of 26.11% and 16.67% respectively, closing at N1.67 and N0.40, as investors took profit. During the week also, the prices of Guaranty Trust Bank, McNichols, Access Bank, and Custodian Investment were adjusted for a dividend of N2.45, 5 kobo, 25 kobo, and 35 kobo respectively proposed by their directors. Also, investors are already anticipating the bulk of 2019Q1 company earnings reports that will tell how the economy performed between January and March. Market Outlook We expect the mixed performance to continue this week due to profit booking from the rally witnessed between Wednesday and Friday last week. We must not gloss over the reality that there is currently no positive trigger to sustain the recent market resurgence. That notwithstanding, we would not overlook the possibility of a bargain-hunting motive supporting positive performance, especially with many fundamentally sound stocks remaining underpriced. Infinity Mortgage Bank has already kicked off the Q1 earnings reporting season with stronger numbers when compared to prior year’s and yet to reflect on the share price. With the prices of major blue chips continuing to drop in recent weeks, we expect speculative trading to shape the market’s direction in this trading week, despite the seeming negative outlook. The volatility witnessed last week was driven by traders and investors repositioning ahead of dividend declaration by major listed companies. The ongoing volatility will continue as investors and fund managers rebalance their portfolios, with eyes fixed on the political space and ongoing full year company earnings and post-election market dynamics. Recovery Of N5tr Outstanding AMCON Bad Debts A Collective Task, Says CEO Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), Ahmed Kuru, on Thursday in Abuja said the recovery of over N5tr bad debts in its books should be seen as a collective responsibility of all Nigerians. Speaking when he received cadets from the Accounting Department of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), officers and men, as well as lecturers from the academy led by Brigadier-General Ibrahim Mohammed Jallo, the Academy Registrar, Kuru said this is contrary to expectations that AMCON alone would fully recover the debts before its oncoming sunset. In its zeal to recover the debt, he said AMCON changed its recovery strategy from negotiation to enforcement with the creation of the Asset Management Partners (AMPs) scheme. This, besides recovering over N1tr, this intervention in the banking sector protected thousands of jobs, said, besides creating thousands of other, in addition to creating 9,000 direct and indirect employment as well. According to a statement by the corporation, the cadets visited AMCON on an excursion as part of visits to selected financial institutions where they are given the opportunity to match theory with practical realities of accounting principles in the outside world. Kuru, who was represented by the Executive Director, Assets, Dr. Eberechukwu Uneze, lamented the attitude of typical AMCON recalcitrant debtors, urging stakeholders, including the military and other security agencies to support ongoing efforts. The current behavior of the debtors, he said reflects the nonchalant attitude of the Nigerian populace, warning that failure to recover the debt means that the government would somehow, someday, repay with taxpayers’ money. Such negative disposition by debtors, he continued, is responsible for the rascality experienced in the banking sector, which led to the creation of AMCON in 2010. For him, those who think the challenge of recovering the huge debt is the sole headache of AMCON should rather rethink, because the monies actually belong to Nigerian taxpayers. Recall that the bonds which AMCON issued to buy the toxic debts off banks enjoy the Federal Government’s (sovereign) guaranty. The money, with which the government would repay the debts, the AMCON boss continued, could have been used to provide or improve infrastructure across the country. He insisted that AMCON has remarkably done well against all odds since it was established and is not resting on its oars to ensure that these debtors pay what they owe the nation. Continuing, he stressed that “with the AMP scheme, AMCON is laying a solid foundation for the stability of the financial sector because we are gradually and systemically grooming professionals that will take over the job of AMCON at sunset. Our thinking is that at the end of this assignment as mandated by the law, we would have trained highly experienced and professional agents with the requisite capacity and know-how to continue to function as asset managers in the country. This is because AMCON was not established to stay forever because that will encourage bad behaviour in banks. It also has a moral hazard, which is not good for our economy and the country,” he concluded. While appreciating the efforts of AMCON’s management, Brigadier-General Jallo spoke of the need for collaboration between the corporation and the NDA in terms of staff training, among other areas of partnership for a mutually beneficial relationship. He said the cadets were part of the 68 Regular Course in the Accounting Department of the NDA who were on the verge of graduating from the academy and have also visited other government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) across four states, in line with the desire to ensure well-rounded graduates. Speculation Ahead of 2019Q1 Reports, March Inflation Data May Trigger Rebound On NGSE Market Update for April 9 Trading on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) closed with the benchmark All-Share index closing marginally down, compared to the huge losses of previous sessions. Tuesday’s oversold region is a sign that the market is resisting further decline and expecting positive information, from the government in terms of policy direction to trigger the expected reversal that is becoming long overdue after the uncertainty that pervaded the months ahead of the Presidential election. Investdata is daily bombarded by anxious investors through phone calls, emails and text messages, among other, with questions such as whether stock prices will decline further. Our answer has remained ‘NO.’ But then, there is a 50/50 chance that the market is already at its oversold region presently and is just expecting a trigger to jumpstart the recovery. At the risk of repeating our position, Investdata analysts maintain that the market and many of the stocks are grossly undervalued at this point. The primary challenges at the moment include the low confidence level, illiquidity and a failure on the part of government to provide the much needed direction. The last issue can be overcome very quickly by the government doing the needful by engaging the right people in the new cabinet, as well as economic managers that understand the importance of balancing fiscal and monetary policy to drive economic development and growth. The government also cannot continue to ignore the need to ensure the proper working and good corporate governance in an important and strategic organization like the Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC). It is painful that not only did the Muhammadu Buhari administration dissolve the new board inaugurated at the time by his successor- Goodluck Jonathan, for four years, he has not reconstituted the board in all of four years, following which the organization has been run as a department in the Ministry of Finance. Worse still, all by one member of the management team today is in acting capacity and yet, the government is quick to appoint boards for the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC). It then shows the scant importance attached to the Nigerian capital market by this administration, no wonder its treatment with such disdain. NSE Daily Time Frame at OVERSOLD region of 21.69point A key piece in the continuation of the global economic recovery will be a weaker dollar. It will drive a more balanced U.S. and global economy, and it will reflect strength in emerging markets (i.e. capital flows toemerging markets). The higher U.S. rates have meant a stronger dollar. With global central banks moving in opposite directions in recent years, capital has flowed to the United States. But the emerging markets have suffered under this situation, with money flowing out from emerging market economies and in the process weakening them, their currencies and leading to growth in their foreign currency denominated debts. Also, the oscillation in oil price between $60 and $70 is good for Nigeria, if only our economic policy will empower private sector and government reduces the rate of borrowing to allow funds flow in the system. The NSE index opened the trading on the downside in the morning and remained down nearly all day, touching intraday low of 28,989.48 basis points from a high of 29,160.11bps, before retracing up marginally in the afternoon. This reduced losing momentum and finished the day at 29,149bps on a low traded volume. Market technicals for the day were negative but mixed, as volume traded was lower than previous day’s in the midst of negative breadth and strong buying pressure as revealed by Investdata daily sentiment report, showing a buy volume of 94% and 6% sell position of the total daily transaction volume index of 0.95. The forces behind the day’s market performance was very weak, as shown by Money Flow Index at 12.01 points, from previous day’s 12.32bps, indicating low liquidity and lack of funds are causing low demand for stocks. Index and Market Cap The benchmark NSEASI for the session was down slightly by 12.78bps to close at 29,149.46bps, after opening at 29,162.24bps, representing a 0.04% decline, while market capitalization lost N4.8tr to N10.95tr, from its opening value of N10.95tr, and representing 0.04% value loss. Downturn for the day resulted from selloffs in: Dangote Cement, Zenith Bank, FBNH Holding, Dangote Sugar, FCMB, Transcorp and Consolidated Hallmark Insurance that slightly impacted the Year-to-Date loss which extended to 7.26%. Market capitalization drop increased to N771.98bn, or 6.59%, from the year’s opening level of N11.72tr. Bearish Sectoral Indices All the sectoral performance indexes were in red, with NSE Insurance leading the negative with 1.78% as players took profit in CHI Plc, NEM and Niger Insurance. Followed by others sectors. Market breadth stayed negative despite the seeming drop in selloffs as decliners outnumbered advancers in the ratio of 15:12. Market activities in volume and value were down by 17.95% and 41.85% respectively, to 374.03m shares worth N3.06bn from previous day’s 455.88m units valued at N5.26bn, which was driven by financial services and ICT stocks like: Sterling Bank, Chams, FBNH, UBA and Guaranty Trust Bank. Guaranty Trust Bank and Chams were the best performing stocks for the day, with gains of 7.77% and 7.69% respectively, closing at N34.00and N0.28 per share on the strength of positive market sentiment and three kobo dividend. On the other hand, NEM Insurance and Ecobank Transnational Incorporated lost 9.87% and 6.67% respectively, closing at N2.10 and N10.50 each, on profit taking and general market direction. Market Outlook We expect a positive outing as traders speculate ahead of Q1 numbers and inflation data for March, which will give direction into how this year could turn out after seeing the weak 2018 financials. The volatility witnessed last week, was driven by traders and investors repositioning ahead of dividend declaration by major listed companies. The ongoing volatility will continued as investors and fund managers rebalance their portfolios, with eyes fixed on political space and ongoing full year company earnings position and post-election market dynamics. Investors should review their positions in line with their investment goals, strength of the company numbers and act as events unfold in the global and domestic environment. However, we would like to reiterate our advice that investors should go for equities with intrinsic value, We advise investors to allow numbers guide their decisions while repositioning in any stock, especially now that stock prices remain low in the midst of mixed company numbers, weak economic and market fundamentals. Meanwhile, we greatly appreciate participants in the Abuja Invest 2019 Post-Election Bulls & Bears held on Saturday, March 23. The investment education train moves to Port Harcourt, Rivers State, with Chart Summit 2019!
