The constant rise in the level of intimidation, harassment, emotional, psychological and physical assault, brutality and extra judicial MURDERS been carried out by those who have been constitutionally endowed to safe guard and protect us; the Nigerian Police, has been very alarming over the years. The biggest culprit of these atrocities is SARS. The Special Anti-Robbery Squad(SARS) is a division of the Nigerian Police that seems to be bigger than the entire police force and somewhat enjoy immunity from the law. SARS was solely created to tackle "armed robbery" but have resorted to gross violation of fundamental human rights, harassment, intimation, kidnapping and murder of innocent citizens in the guise of chasing after Internet fraudsters (yahoo boys). What is the job of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)? SARS are now seen as legal armed robbers, who steal and kill with so much impunity and reckless abandone. There have been numerous campaigns even from prominent Nigerians to put an end to SARS but the government and police authorities have turned deaf ears to them. This clearly shows how insensitive the government is to the plight of its own people. A very good indication of a government that has the interest of it's own citizens at heart is the ability to listen and protect their interests. The ability to listen to the cries of the people and act swiftly and decisively on issues bothering especially on the life, security and safety of its citizens has been the hallmark of various developed/developing countries in the world with good leadership. There have been constant cries for something concrete to be done about these high level atrocities been carried out especially on the youths of this nation but nothing concrete has been done to mitigate or eradicate such issues. The disregard for public opinion by the government and police authorities clearly shows that some persons in power/authority are benefitting from the corrupt and illegal activities of SARS. It shows total disregard for the sanctity of life of the citizens of our nation. It shows that Nigerians are not valued by our own government. That's why you see some top police officers get really aggressive and agitated when there is protest to end SARS. That's why it seems some persons who are seen as social influencers are paid either to support SARS or relinquish their desire to join the "End SARS" movement. Anyone that speaks up against SARS is hunted down, harassed and arrested. How can a police division be considered bigger than the entire Nigerian police? SARS has been banned severally by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) over the years but like a hydra-headed monster it keeps on resurfacing with even more deadly venom on the populace. The sad truth is that the Nigerian police is a Law enforcement agency that doesn't respect the law they swore to uphold and defend. SARS will not be scrapped simply because it seems to be an illegal cash cow for the Nigerian Police authorities and some highly placed persons in power. They will try to protect it at all cost maybe to the detriment of the life of the citizens because it serves their selfish interests. That's why no matter how many times the IGP gets to ban/reform SARS, it won't work! These guys are bigger than the Nigerian Police because they are the bloodline and cash cow of the police through illegal adoptions, kidnappings, extortion, intimidation, harassment and extra judicial MURDERS. Even some prominent Nigerians have been victimised by SARS. SARS is just a unit/division within the Nigerian Police, for those trying to defend SARS by saying crime will be on the increase once they are scrapped, I'll like to know the job description of the entire Nigerian Police again? What about the mobile police unit? Does that mean that SARS does the job of the entire police? I am appealing to the government to show they care and value the lives of the people by listening to the cries to "End SARS". Our society is currently facing so much economic hardship, insecurity, high unemployment rates, recession and frustration occasioned by the Covid-19 pandemic. This issue might just be the last straw that'll break the camels back and snowball into a major crisis in terms of civil unrest. Some are even agitating for #KILLSARS. This might also spark the much dreaded revolution and it will be very bloody if it gets to that. I believe our government is very committed in safe guarding the lives of our people and protecting our national interest. I'm calling on the President and police authorities to swiftly take a decisive action. The entire Police force needs thorough reformation and reorientation. There is no better time than now for the government to show its empathy to its citizens than now. This is the best time for the government to regain the trust of the people in this difficult times. Even if I might be hunted down and maybe arrested, posterity will take into account that I was patriotic not only in my heart but with my voice and pen. God Bless Nigeria. -Courage. O.
