Jonathan Akinyemi (born November 22, 1988
in Warrington, England) is a Nigerian slalom
canoer. At the 2012 Summer Olympics he
competed in the K-1 event, finishing 21st in
the heats, failing to qualify for the semifinals.


Nigerian canoeist, Jonathan Akinyemi, has
arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for the 2016
Summer Olympic Games which begins August
5.
The British-born star became the first Nigerian
athlete to hit the South American country for
the quadrennial games with Team Nigeria set
to depart the country August 1, Vanguard
reports.

Akinyemi, who will be making his second
straight bow for Nigeria at the Olympics in the
canoe/slalom kayak event at the Rio Games,
arrived Brazil early Wednesday and
immediately went through his paces.


The 27-year-old was received at the Games
Village by officials of Team Nigeria. “He
immediately got down to work and has not
slowed down since he hit Rio’’ , an excited
official of Nigeria Olympic Committee said.
Born in England, Jonathan Akinyemi is the first
Nigerian to compete in the canoeing event of
the Olympic Games.
He qualified as Nigeria’s only canoeist to Rio
2016 in the men’s K-1 class by obtaining a top
finish at the 2015 African Canoe Slalom
Championships in Sagana, Kenya.


He will be hoping to improve on his showing at
the London 2012 Olympics where he finished
21st in the heats, failing to qualify for the
semifinals.
Team Nigeria has been given a mandate of
bringing home at least 10 medals from the
2016 Games.

Francis Taiwo, the fleeing pastor who chained his 9-year-old son for weeks, has been arrested.

Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the arrest to PREMIUM TIMES said the suspect was arrested on Sunday, with the assistance of his church members.

The suspect had been on the run since police and officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, burst into his church on Friday to rescue the victim, Korede.

The victim’s stepmother had earlier been arrested by the police who announced that the malnourished boy will be handed to the ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare for further rehabilitation.

Mr. Adejobi said Mr. Taiwo, a pastor at the Key of Joy Celestial Church, Ajibawo, Atan-Ota town of Ogun State, will be charged to court as soon as investigations are completed.

Oklahoma State University forward Tyrek Coger
has died after collapsing during a team
workout.



Coger, 21, was taken to the Stillwater Medical
Center after suffering from heat exhaustion
shortly after 5pm on Thursday. He was
pronounced dead at 6.23pm.



The temperature at OSU's workout was 99
degrees, with a heat index of 105, the
Stillwater News Press reports.



The 6'9" forward had only been with his
Oklahoma State teammates for a few weeks,
after transferring from Cape Fear Community
College in North Carolina on July 5.
OSU coach Brad Underwood said he is
devastated by the news.

The Nigeria Football Federation has assured
that it is working on immortalizing coaching
legends Shaibu Amodu and Stephen Keshi, who
both passed on last month.


NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi
reiterated this while receiving in his office on
Thursday, the newly –appointed National
Technical Director, Mr. Bitrus Bewarang.


Amodu, the only person to have coached the
Super Eagles in four different periods, was the
National Technical Director before his death
on Saturday, June 11. Keshi, the longest –
serving captain of the team and who also
coached the team to win the Africa Cup of
Nations and reach the Round of 16 at the FIFA
World Cup, passed on three days earlier.



“The NFF is liasing with the Government
through the Federal Ministry of Youth and
Sports, with regards to the immortalization of
the two icons of our football who died last
month. Both men contributed immensely to
the development of Nigeria football and will
never be forgotten.



“The NFF Board has immense confidence in
your person that you will be able to fit quite
well into the shoes left by late Coach Amodu
and perhaps come up with great ideas to
enhance the workings of the Technical
department,” Sanusi told Bewarang, who is
president of the Nigeria Football Coaches
Association.



On Wednesday, Mr. Abdulrafiu Yusuf (Assistant
Director, Technical) and Dr. Robinson Okosun
(Head, Psychology Unit) represented the NFF
at the 40thday Fidau prayer for the soul of the
departed Amodu at his home in Okpella, Edo
State.



The final burial rites for late Stephen Keshi will
begin on Wednesday, July 27 with a lying-in-
state in Abuja, and culminate in internment at
his hometown, Illa, Delta State on Friday, July
29.

kidney. Spurs fan Tim Reid wrote an
emotional tribute to Dany Reid on Facebook,
but couldn't resist a jokey jibe at his 'best
pal', adding: "Although you're a dirty Gooner."
Tim shared a photo of the pair together in
hospital each wearing the shirts of their
favourite sides. In the post on Facebook, Tim
wrote:

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and
Dangote Foundation have met with the
Yobe State government to appraise progress
of routine immunization in the state.


Co-Chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation, Mr Bill Gates, the Chairman of the
Dangote Foundation, Aliko Dangote and Yobe
State Government met on Wednesday to
appraise the progress made in the fight against
polio and other eight child killer diseases in
Yobe State.
The meeting was joined through video feed by
Mr Bill Gates and Aliko Dangote both in the
United States and Yobe State government in
Damaturu, the state capital.
The video feed meeting had in attendance
various developmental partners who pledged
to give their all in the fight against the nine
child killer diseases.
The meeting observed that 15 local
governments out of the 17 in Yobe State were
effectively covered during the period under
review.
It was stated that the remaining local
governments; Gujba and Gulani had suffered
insurgency greatly and needed to be covered.
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Dangote
and Yobe State had signed a Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) in January on
strengthening routine immunisation in the
security threatened North East state of Nigeria.
The Yobe State Governor, Ibrahim Gaidam,
informed the meeting that his administration
was committed to the MoU to ensure that the
nine child killer diseases are eradicated from
the state and Nigeria in general.
He said that the state would ensure full
coverage of the ongoing support for the
routine immunisation programme through
community engagement, particularly the use of
traditional rulers.
Mr Bill Gates and Aliko Dangote commended
the Yobe State government for the remarkable
progress made despite insurgency.
They urged the state government to work
towards meeting the 2017 targets of
countering all the nine child killer diseases.
Dangote pledged to partner the Yobe State
government in the reconstruction of the 22
health facilities destroyed in Gujba and Gulani
LGAs of the state by the Boko Haram militants.
