Warring forces in South Sudan have carried out horrific crimes against children, including castration, rape and tying them together before slitting their throats, the UN has said.
“Survivors report that boys have been castrated and left to bleed to death… girls as young as eight have been gang raped and murdered,” UN children’s agency chief Anthony Lake said in a statement released earlier this week.
“Children have been tied together before their attackers slit their throats… others have been thrown into burning buildings.”
Tens of thousands are believed to have been killed in the 18-month war, although there is no clear toll. At least 129 children were killed in May in the northern state of Unity, scene of some of heaviest fighting in the civil war, Unicef added.
Civil war began in December 2013 when President Salva Kiir accused his former deputy Riek Machar of planning a coup, setting off a cycle of retaliatory killings across the country that has split the poverty-stricken, landlocked country along ethnic lines.
It has been characterised by ethnic massacres, rape and the use of child soldiers.
“The violence against children in South Sudan has reached a new level of brutality,” Lake added. Thousands of children have also been abducted to fight.
“Children are also being aggressively recruited into armed groups of both sides on an alarming scale – an estimated 13,000 children forced to participate in a conflict not of their making,” Lake added.
“Imagine the psychological and physical effects on these children – not only of the violence inflicted on them but also the violence they are forced to inflict on others.”
A quarter of a million children face starvation , while two-thirds of the country’s 12 million people need aid, with 4.5 million people facing severe food insecurity, according to the UN.
“In the name of humanity and common decency this violence against the innocent must stop,” he said

the newly-elected Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum, Ondo’s Olusegun Mimiko, on Thursday said that the opposition party would regain power at the centre come 2019.

Mimiko said the PDP had in fact commenced the process of taking back power from the All Progressives Congress during the next general elections.

He said this at the Akure airport during a mini-reception organised for him on his return from Abuja, where he was voted as the new PDP governors’ chairman on Wednesday.

Mimiko said the governors were determined to give the PDP a new face as the opposition party, pledging that the party’s engagement of the ruling APC would be robust and offer alternative policy platform and programmes for the country.

He said the PDP governors had resolved to collectively work assiduously and excel in governance with a view to re-branding the party and selling it to all Nigerians.

He said, “We must sustain enthusiasm in our party; and as governors who have pivotal roles to play in re-branding our party, we must show in governance term the difference between us and the APC and these are the challenges ahead of us.

“As opposition party, our engagement will be robust; we must offer alternative policy platform and programme when we criticise one. We must show Nigerians that we are a different party. We will not be abusive in opposing the government and we will praise where it is worthy of praise and criticise in a very robust manner”

He said that the PDP in Ondo State had reached an appreciable level of repositioning and that the party was “overwhelmingly” in charge in the state.

The Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Jumoke Akindele, noted at the reception that the emergence of Mimiko as the chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum was well deserved.

Gunmen, suspected to be kidnappers, have abducted the Executive Secretary of the Cocoa Association of Nigeria, Mr. Michael Adewunmi, in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Thursday night.

After the abduction, which reportedly took place at Akinjo Junction, Oshokoti area of the state capital, his black Toyota Lexus SUV was found abandoned with four doors opened. They were also said to have taken his Ipad and mobile phones along.

The victim’s vehicle, with number plate ONDO ANG 149 AA, was reportedly discovered by men of the Ondo State Police command and taken to the Ijapo Police Station, Akure.

As of the time of filling this report, the abductors had not made any contact with the family of the victim but it was learnt that the state police command had swung into action to secure his release.

When reached on the telephone for comments, the Public Relations Officer of the state Police Command, Mr. Wole Ogodo, said the Command had commenced investigation on the matter and will soon rescue the victim.
