Politics / Buhari To Muslims: Shun Violence, Killings And Extremism by Aisosa56: 9:06pm On Nov 10, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari has said that the greatest honour Muslims could do the Prophet Muhammad is to follow his shining examples of non-violence, peaceful disposition and remarkable virtues of patience.

This was contained in his goodwill message to the Muslim Ummah on the occasion of the Maulud celebration to commemorate the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad.

Buhari, according to a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, said: “Putting into practice the great virtues for which the Holy Prophet Muhammad is historically famous and revered would have a far greater impact on changing our attitudes and behaviours than the best sermons ever will.

“The indiscriminate killing of innocent people, the kidnapping of female students and forcing them into marriage and conversion is contrary to teachings and personal examples of the Prophet Muhammad.

“Violent extremism is the single biggest challenge facing the image of Islam today which has been hijacked by a minority of misguided elements who are using religion to cover-up their criminal agenda.

“There is the urgent need for increased vigilance by Muslims in order to frustrate and stop the spread of violent ideologies that are causing human havocs and tragedies around the world.

“Extremism is like a cancer that needs to be attacked in its early stages before it grows malignantly out of control and harm the society.” he said

He also advised Muslims not to allow their children to be lured and recruited by extremists who will ultimately destroy their lives and future.

While wishing the Muslim Ummah a peaceful celebration, the President urged them to use this occasion to renew their resolve in promoting tolerance, love, harmony and peaceful coexistence in the country.

President Buhari also sent special goodwill messages to the Emirs of Daura, Alhaji Faruk Umar Faruk; Kazaure, Najib Hussaini Adamu; Hadejia, Alhaji Adamu Abubakar Maje Haruna; and that of Gumel, Alhaji Ahmed Mohammed Sani, whose people celebrate this festival, named Sallar Gani, with greater fervour as well as prayers for the unity, progress, and prosperity of Muslims in Nigeria and around the world.
Politics / Presidency: ‘why Osinbajo’s Aides Were Sacked’ by Aisosa56: 7:11pm On Nov 09, 2019
The Nigerian presidency has explained why a host of Vice President Osinbajo's staff were sacked.

The Nigerian presidency has confirmed that some top ranking aides in the office of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo have been sacked as “an appropriate response to the general perception that the presidency has an over-sized and bloated workforce which acts as a drag on efficiency.”

In the last couple of days, reports that 35 of Osinbajo’s aides have been sacked, have dominated social and mainstream media chatter.

The names of the ‘sacked staff’ have also been splurged on a couple of online platforms. The reported purge was interpreted as one more example of the strained relationship between Osinbajo and President Muhammadu Buhari.

As the rumours made the rounds, Osinbajo’s spokesperson, Laolu Akande, took to his twitter page on the night of Thursday, November 7, to denounce the stories.

“A list circulating in the media on the so-called sacked presidential aides is not genuine and ought to be ignored,” Akande had tweeted.

However, in a statement made available to Pulse by Garba Shehu who is the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, the presidency has confirmed that an ongoing overhaul in the nation’s seat of power meant some of the vice president’s staff had to take a walk.

“The Presidency wishes to confirm that there is on-going, an unprecedented overhaul of the nation’s seat of government, arising from which a number of political appointments have either been revoked or not renewed in the second term.

“The exercise, which has been ordered by the president, is to streamline decision-making, cut down multiple authorities and reduce the cost of administration.

“It is also an appropriate response to the general perception that the presidency has an oversized and bloated workforce which acts as a drag on efficiency.”

The presidency also said the purge wasn’t restricted to Osinbajo’s office; as a number of President Buhari’s aides never made it back to the villa after the expiration of his first term.

“As may have been noticed by discerning members of the public, a number of political appointees among the few that served in the office of the president were not returned for the second term.

“The office of the Vice President, His Excellency Yemi Osinbajo has, in compliance with the directive of the president, equally been shed of a number of such appointees.

“In carrying out these exercises, the overriding objective is to save taxpayer money and deliver needed service to the public. As far as the president is concerned, there is no scope for an excuse for the administration after getting a huge mandate to run the country for four more years.”

For the umpteenth time, the presidency also denied unending reports of a rift between Osinbajo and Buhari.

“In the light of this, the presidency wishes to strongly deny rumours of a rift between President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. The relationship between the two leaders remains excellent and trusting. Together, they will script a glorious future for the nation.

“The media reports of a soured relationship are originating from the minds and mouths of mischief makers, who are desperate for entertaining stories from the Aso Rock Villa with which to titillate the public. This ulterior motive is the basis of the wrong interpretation given to the recent exercise in the presidency.

“There has been a streamlining of staff going on for a while. The president has always had fewer staff than the vice president, and there were always plans to reduce the number of staff at the villa. The streamlining was not personal or targeted to undermine the vice president's office, as the so-called insider sources quoted by the media appear to make it seem.”

Whispers of a cabal that has seized Buhari’s government have persisted since his first term, helped by First Lady Aisha Buhari of course.

But the presidency says Buhari, who was elected for a second term in office in February 2019, retains absolute control of his administration.

“The President is in absolute control of his government. The media should stop attributing non-existent powers to some people. There cannot be anyone too powerful for President Buhari to control,” the statement concluded.

Osinbajo, 62, is being touted in his Southwest base as a possible replacement for Buhari whose constitutionally permissible second term in office elapses in May of 2023.

An informal arrangement among the nation's political elite could see power return to Osinbajo's southern region after the next election cycle.

Health / Part 1) 11 Things Not To Do During Pregnancy by Aisosa56: 11:45am On Jul 20, 2019
There aren’t many hard and fast rules about what not to do during your pregnancy, beyond abstaining from alcohol and drugs, of course. For the most part, you can continue with most of your prepregnancy life.

But because the health and safety of your growing baby is essential, here’s a list of 11 things not to do while pregnant.

1. Don’t eat these foods
The biggest list of don’ts for pregnant women involves food.

During your pregnancy, you should avoid:

Raw meat and shellfish: Uncooked seafood (we’re looking at you, sushi), including oysters, mussels, and clams. Also avoid rare or undercooked beef and poultry. These can be contaminated with toxoplasmosis or salmonella.
Deli meat: Deli meats can be contaminated with listeria, bacteria that can cross the placenta and infect your developing baby. An infection in utero could lead to blood poisoning and could be life-threatening for your baby.
Fish with high levels of mercury: That includes fish such as shark, king mackerel, swordfish, and tilefish. Wondering about tuna? In general, canned, chunk light tuna has lower levels of mercury, but it’s still smart to eat it sparingly.
Smoked seafood: Avoid lox, kippered fish, jerky, or nova style salmon. There’s a risk that this refrigerated, smoked seafood could be contaminated with listeria. Smoked seafood that’s shelf-safe or canned, however, is probably fine.
Raw eggs: This includes foods that contain raw eggs, so be wary of homemade Caesar dressings, Hollandaise sauces, mayonnaise, and certain custards. Raw eggs can pose a risk of salmonella.
Soft cheeses: Some imported soft cheeses can have listeria, so steer clear of soft cheeses like Roquefort, feta, Gorgonzola, Camembert, and Brie. Mexican cheeses such as queso blanco and queso fresco should also be avoided, unless they’re made from pasteurized milk.
Unpasteurized dairy: These products could contain listeria.
It seems extensive, but there are still plenty of great nutrition choices during your pregnancy. While it’s always important to eat a balanced diet, pregnancy is an especially critical time. In your daily mail plan, try to incorporate:

lean proteins
healthy fats
lots of fresh vegetables and fruits
water
2. Don’t paint the nursery
There’s no way to measure toxicity from actual exposure to paint, so this recommendation is based on the likelihood of toxicity.

Paint toxicity depends on the individual solvents and chemicals in the paint, as well as exposure. While it’s assumed that household painting has a low exposure level, the safest course of action is to seriously reduce your exposure to the fumes from these paints.

Even better? Find someone else to handle the painting.

3. Don’t overdo it on the caffeine
It’s a stimulant and a diuretic, which means drinking your usual few cups of coffee every day will increase your blood pressure, heart rate, and the number of trips you make to the restroom. Plus, caffeine crosses the placenta.

While you may function just fine caffeinated, your growing baby doesn’t. That’s because your baby’s metabolism is still developing.

You don’t have to forgo caffeine entirely: Moderate levels of caffeine, defined as 150 to 300 milligrams (mg) a day, should be fine.

Just remember that caffeine isn’t just in tea and coffee. You’ll find it in chocolate, sodas, and even certain over-the-counter medicines.

4. Don’t take certain medications
Some medications can be harmful to your growing baby. Before taking any over-the- counter or prescription medications and supplements, speak to your doctor.

5. Don’t wear stilettos
Stick to heels with a 3-inch heel or less: Think kitten heels, wedges, and platforms. As your belly grows, your center of gravity will change. So you may find yourself a little unsteady on your feet. Add to that swollen ankles, and you may find yourself living in your flip flops.

6. Don’t hang out in the hot tub or sauna
If you’re feeling aches and pains during your pregnancy, relaxing in a hot tub may seem ideal. But an elevated body temperature during the first trimester can lead to certain birth defects.

Skip the hot tub, which usually maintains a water temperature around 104°F, and try a warm bath instead.

7. Don’t change the kitty litter
If you must change kitty, wear gloves and wash your hands well afterward. Cat feces can carry toxoplasmosis, a rare parasitic disease.

While you’re more likely to contract it by eating raw meat or through gardening, it’s still a good idea to have someone else change the cat litter daily.

8. Don’t breathe secondhand smoke
Smoking is terrible for you and your baby, but secondhand smoke can be nearly as bad. There are roughly 4,000 chemicals in secondhand smoke, and some of them have been linked to cancer.

Exposure to secondhand smoke during your pregnancy can lead to:

miscarriage
premature delivery
low birth weight
learning or behavioral issues as your baby grows
sudden infant death syndrome

Health / Part 1) High Blood Pressure—15 Remedies by Aisosa56: 11:35am On Jul 20, 2019
Take-home message
High blood pressure is a dangerous condition that can damage your heart. It affects one in three people in the US and 1 billion people worldwide (1, 2).
If left uncontrolled, it raises your risk of heart disease and stroke.

Fifteen remedies
But there's good news. There are a number of things you can do to lower your blood pressure naturally, even without medication.
Here are 15 natural ways to combat high blood pressure.

1. Walk and exercise regularly
couple jogging
Exercise is one of the best things you can do to lower high blood pressure.

Regular exercise helps make your heart stronger and more efficient at pumping blood, which lowers the pressure in your arteries.

In fact, 150 minutes of moderate exercise, such as walking, or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise, such as running, per week can help lower blood pressure and improve your heart health (3, 4).

What's more, doing even more exercise reduces your blood pressure even further, according to the National Walkers' Health Study (5).

Bottom Line: Walking just 30 minutes a day can help lower your blood pressure. More exercise helps reduce it even further.

2. Reduce your sodium intake
Salt intake is high around the world. In large part, this is due to processed and prepared foods.

For this reason, many public health efforts are aimed at lowering salt in the food industry (6).

In many studies, salt has been linked to high blood pressure and heart events, like stroke (7, cool.

However, more recent research indicates that the relationship between sodium and high blood pressure is less clear (9, 10).

One reason for this may be genetic differences in how people process sodium. About half of people with high blood pressure and a quarter of people with normal levels seem to have a sensitivity to salt (11).

If you already have high blood pressure, it's worth cutting back your sodium intake to see if it makes a difference. Swap out processed foods with fresh ones and try seasoning with herbs and spices, rather than salt.

Bottom Line: Most guidelines for lowering blood pressure recommend lowering sodium intake. However, that recommendation might make the most sense for people who are salt-sensitive.

3. Drink less alcohol
Drinking alcohol can raise blood pressure. In fact, alcohol is linked to 16% of high blood pressure cases around the world (12).

While some research has suggested that low-to-moderate amounts of alcohol may protect the heart, those benefits may be offset by negative effects (12).

In the US, moderate alcohol consumption is defined as no more than one drink a day for women and two for men. If you drink more than that, cut back.

Bottom Line: Drinking alcohol in any quantity may raise your blood pressure. Limit your drinking to no more than one drink a day for women, two for men.

4. Eat more potassium-rich foods
bananas
Potassium is an important mineral.

It helps your body get rid of sodium and ease pressure on your blood vessels.

Modern diets have increased most people's sodium intake while decreasing potassium intake (13).

To get a better balance of potassium to sodium in your diet, focus on eating fewer processed foods and more fresh, whole foods.

Foods that are particularly high in potassium include:

Vegetables, especially leafy greens, tomatoes, potatoes and sweet potatoes
Fruit, including melons, bananas, avocados, oranges and apricots
Dairy, such as milk and yogurt
Tuna and salmon
Nuts and seeds
Beans
Bottom Line: Eating fresh fruits and vegetables, which are rich in potassium, can help lower blood pressure.

5. Cut back on caffeine
If you've ever downed a cup of coffee before you've had your blood pressure taken, you'll know that caffeine causes an instant boost.

However, there's not a lot of evidence to suggest that drinking caffeine regularly can cause a lasting increase (14).

In fact, people who drink caffeinated coffee and tea tend to have a lower risk of heart disease, including high blood pressure, than those who don't (15, 16, 17, 18).

Caffeine may have a stronger effect on people who don't consume it regularly (19).

If you suspect you're caffeine-sensitive, cut back to see if it lowers your blood pressure (20).

Bottom Line: Caffeine can cause a short-term spike in blood pressure, although for many people it does not cause a lasting increase.
